knew exactly when you would exist and where you would exist. 00:02:00.660 --> 00:02:07.880 And so what does it look like for you and for me to be faithful to Jesus now, in our place in history, as we walk with Christ, what is it God desires 00:02:07.880 --> 00:02:09.710 for us and the book of acts? 00:02:09.740 --> 00:02:16.780 This narrative story becomes this great example and inspiration for us as a church today in following after the Lord and 00:02:16.780 --> 00:02:19.090 what it means for you and for me. 00:02:19.280 --> 00:02:24.880 Now, as you read this book, I think it's important to recognize that the author of the book of Acts is Luke. 00:02:24.880 --> 00:02:27.000 Luke gave us two books in the New Testament. 00:02:27.000 --> 00:02:30.300 He gave us the Gospel of Luke, and he gave us the book of Acts. 00:02:30.360 --> 00:02:37.560 In fact, when you start with the ending of the Gospel of Luke and then you go right into the book of acts, you realize those two books really 00:02:37.560 --> 00:02:39.350 dovetail together quite nicely. 00:02:39.460 --> 00:02:46.710 I mean, Luke ends with the death and resurrection of Jesus, and the book of acts begins with the resurrection of Jesus. 00:02:46.920 --> 00:02:54.420 And so Luke records for us as really the only Gentile author of any book of the New Testament. 00:02:54.780 --> 00:03:02.220 And he writes from a time period of Jesus's resurrection, which is around between 30 to 33 A.D. 00:03:02.260 --> 00:03:05.620 and then the story of acts continues to about 60 to 62 A.D.. 00:03:05.620 --> 00:03:12.440 So for 30 years, he's writing for us how the early church moved forward and what God had called them to do. 00:03:12.520 --> 00:03:18.020 And today we're going to talk about how they were introduced to that movement of the Lord in their lives. 00:03:18.020 --> 00:03:23.590 As we look at what it looks like to go from a spectator to a participator in what God calls us to in this world. 00:03:23.860 --> 00:03:30.880 In fact, we're going to talk about four components that help lead us as God's people, from just simply being a spectator into being a participator 00:03:30.880 --> 00:03:33.420 in what God desires for our life. 00:03:33.520 --> 00:03:35.930 And in fact, when you think about your life, your life is a gift. 00:03:36.200 --> 00:03:38.780 It is a precious gift to you that we don't want to waste. 00:03:39.220 --> 00:03:46.800 I know we certainly make mistakes, but how can we make most of the life that God has given to us and the reason for which God has created us? 00:03:47.480 --> 00:03:48.540 It's wonderful. 00:03:48.540 --> 00:03:53.500 If you know Jesus this morning, if you might call yourself born again, saved, redeemed in Christ. 00:03:53.540 --> 00:04:00.140 I mean, that's our hope for everybody that they that we would find that in Jesus, which is really the beginning of a relationship in the Lord. 00:04:00.980 --> 00:04:04.660 But to understand God has made us more for just simply to be saved. 00:04:04.660 --> 00:04:11.780 God has a purpose for your existence in this world that is born out of a relationship with him, that as you find new life in 00:04:11.780 --> 00:04:15.470 Christ, you would walk in that relationship and in so doing live for his glory. 00:04:15.900 --> 00:04:21.779 If all God desired for you was to simply save your soul the minute you were saved, he would take you out of this world. 00:04:22.040 --> 00:04:27.400 But the fact that you remain says to us that God has a mission for us to live in light of our relationship with him. 00:04:27.460 --> 00:04:33.310 So as we come to know him and grow in him, what is it like for us to live for him in the world around us? 00:04:33.600 --> 00:04:37.700 And so we ask the question here as a church, we have what we call a discipleship pathway. 00:04:38.300 --> 00:04:43.960 And in that discipleship pathway, we ask the question, what does it look like to see someone go 00:04:50.990 And we take that serious. 00:04:51.100 --> 00:04:56.480 When someone comes into our church, we want to greet people with kindness, to let people know that they matter. 00:04:56.480 --> 00:05:03.500 Because we're all image bearers of God doesn't mean you have necessarily a relationship with God, but you do have intrinsic worth because you're made 00:05:03.500 --> 00:05:04.840 in the image of God. 00:05:04.980 --> 00:05:10.800 And we want to honor people and one of the most beautiful ways that we can honor God, as seen in the way that we care for people around us. 00:05:10.840 --> 00:05:12.590 Because God made people in his image. 00:05:12.800 --> 00:05:16.400 And not only did he make people in his image, he wants to remake you in his image. 00:05:16.400 --> 00:05:18.560 That's the reason Christ came for you. 00:05:18.640 --> 00:05:22.520 So what does it mean for someone to come from the lost world to a saved spectator? 00:05:22.880 --> 00:05:24.330 But we don't want you to stay there long. 00:05:24.440 --> 00:05:31.600 We want you to become a devoted participator in what Christ has called you to, and in him, and from devoted 00:05:31.600 --> 00:05:36.500 participator to a multiplying leader, to recognize the work that Jesus has done in your life. 00:05:36.500 --> 00:05:37.720 He doesn't want to just stay with you. 00:05:37.740 --> 00:05:44.800 He wants you to impart that in others, that others may have the opportunity to experience Jesus to know him and to walk with 00:05:44.800 --> 00:05:44.960 him. 00:05:45.960 --> 00:05:53.040 And so as we look at acts chapter one, this is really the that transition that the author is bringing us through is what does it look like in your life 00:05:53.040 --> 00:05:53.440 and mind? 00:05:53.460 --> 00:05:57.840 And I can't think there's not a more beautiful time in our church's history to go through this book than now. 00:05:57.900 --> 00:06:02.300 And recognizing and God's done a beautiful work here, and God is still on the move. 00:06:02.300 --> 00:06:09.380 I mean, we're doing several baptisms today, and we're thinking about a new home together, and we want our future as a church to continue to make an 00:06:09.380 --> 00:06:11.020 impact throughout this valley. 00:06:11.060 --> 00:06:18.160 So what does this look like for us to continue to walk with God, not as a spectator, but moving into being a participator in what 00:06:18.160 --> 00:06:19.960 God has called me to in this world? 00:06:19.980 --> 00:06:24.820 Let me let me give you a point, number one, and then we'll read some of this passage together. 00:06:25.340 --> 00:06:28.960 But number one is this we need a foundation to trust. 00:06:31.460 --> 00:06:35.840 We need a foundation to trust something like this. 00:06:35.880 --> 00:06:40.180 To do something meaningful, you need a strong conviction. 00:06:40.440 --> 00:06:42.980 The greater the conviction, the greater the impact. 00:06:43.740 --> 00:06:47.030 The more you care, the more you're going to want to live for that purpose. 00:06:47.980 --> 00:06:52.740 So understanding exactly what Jesus has done for us really becomes that foundation of trust. 00:06:52.740 --> 00:06:56.700 And if we had to pin it on something specific, we'd talk about the finished work of Christ. 00:06:57.540 --> 00:07:00.460 The finished work of Christ is significant for you and for therefore, what are you going to live for? 00:07:16.800 --> 00:07:17.020 Does it? 00:07:17.140 --> 00:07:18.500 Does it ultimately matter? 00:07:19.160 --> 00:07:26.300 And there's no greater purpose that you could live for in this world than the one who has created you for his purposes in him and recreates you through 00:07:26.300 --> 00:07:27.080 the cross. 00:07:27.720 --> 00:07:35.200 As you discover that identity, there is nothing that makes a bigger impact with your life than that, because there are eternal implications in 00:07:35.200 --> 00:07:37.240 a life that's given over to the Lord. 00:07:37.720 --> 00:07:42.320 And this is where Luke starts the story in light of the resurrection of Jesus. 00:07:42.340 --> 00:07:43.770 What does it mean for you and for me? 00:07:44.020 --> 00:07:48.790 And he says it like this in acts chapter one, verse one in the first book of Theophilus. 00:07:49.600 --> 00:07:53.000 I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and to teach. 00:07:53.700 --> 00:07:56.120 Let me stop there before reading these next couple of verses. 00:07:56.720 --> 00:08:04.140 Luke is referencing the first book that he wrote, which is the Gospel of Luke, as he now dovetails into the second book, which is the book of acts, 00:08:04.140 --> 00:08:07.580 how the Spirit of God worked in the people of God to accomplish the will of God. 00:08:07.640 --> 00:08:14.760 This narrative story of the early church, and one of the reasons Luke is able to write this story, is because it was funded by 00:08:14.760 --> 00:08:16.610 a particular individual named Theophilus. 00:08:17.380 --> 00:08:22.940 Theophilus gave what was necessary for Luke and some of his friends to go around the world and document this. 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:27.660 And Theophilus, I think, very intentionally picked Luke to participate because Luke is a physician. 00:08:27.660 --> 00:08:29.080 He's an intelligent man. 00:08:29.920 --> 00:08:33.900 And so Luke is very precise in what he is documenting, right? 00:08:33.940 --> 00:08:37.679 I mean, I can't think of anyone here this morning that would say, I don't like a precise doctor. 00:08:37.700 --> 00:08:38.860 I like them 00:08:41.460 --> 00:08:48.780 So Theophilus is Theophilus is now looked at to Luke to be this individual And as you read the gospel or the book of acts, excuse me, 00:08:49.080 --> 00:08:56.080 as you read this book of acts, you discover that Luke a few times within this book actually uses the word we to recognize 00:08:56.080 --> 00:09:03.360 that not only is he writing about the acts of the apostles as they're moving around the world, but he's joined in on the journey at various locations, 00:09:03.360 --> 00:09:07.590 and this happens later in the book of acts where Luke includes himself. 00:09:07.920 --> 00:09:14.920 Some think that the reason Luke is including himself is because Luke has just likely become Paul's personal doctor. 00:09:14.960 --> 00:09:22.170 Like this guy, the apostle Paul has gone through so much in the beatings and things that he has endured, that he just has needed someone there with him constantly. 00:09:22.720 --> 00:09:29.920 And Luke, in a way, has become like his cut man in his corner as Paul went through nine rounds, he's coming to the sign and saying, am 00:09:29.920 --> 00:09:30.280 I? 00:09:30.400 --> 00:09:37.660 How can I am I knocking like and Luke is probably traveling with him to assist Paul, but he's getting to be at the front 00:09:37.660 --> 00:09:42.460 row of everything taking place and he's recording this now for us. 00:09:42.480 --> 00:09:47.140 I think, Theophilus, when he's giving us an invitation to participate in this, to recognize man. 00:09:47.140 --> 00:09:48.830 God is still writing the story, and I can belong. 00:09:49.820 --> 00:09:57.080 But at the same time, he's also helping us realize that when God's people are surrendering themselves to God's calling in our lives, how we 00:09:57.080 --> 00:09:58.700 can make an impact in this world. 00:09:59.240 --> 00:10:06.260 Meaning, when you look at Theophilus, no doubt knowing Theophilus is human like you and me, he's probably done a lot of things in life where 00:10:06.260 --> 00:10:08.500 he's like, I wish I had not done that right. 00:10:08.580 --> 00:10:09.900 It was pretty stupid. 00:10:09.900 --> 00:10:17.020 I wish I could have a do over, but there's one thing in his life I can say that Theophilus was eternally grateful that he got to participate in, 00:10:18.340 --> 00:10:25.400 and that was to contribute to the cause of seeing the book of acts written that has blessed church history all 00:10:25.400 --> 00:10:26.760 these years. 00:10:26.820 --> 00:10:33.420 Now, even when you read the epistles today, the letters that were written after the book of acts, a lot of what we know about the epistles. 00:10:33.820 --> 00:10:41.120 We know because of this narrative story of acts, it helps bring life to those letters that 00:10:41.120 --> 00:10:48.140 we begin to recognize what Paul, for example, would have been dealing with as he's writing his various epistles through the New 00:10:48.140 --> 00:10:48.640 Testament. 00:10:49.660 --> 00:10:56.980 This is a very critical book to the identity of the church, as we better understand what Scripture says 00:10:56.980 --> 00:10:59.790 because of the narrative of the book of acts. 00:11:00.700 --> 00:11:08.120 And Theophilus was simply an individual willing to give of what God had of him to 00:11:08.120 --> 00:11:11.900 be a blessing to those around him, because it's the same for us. 00:11:13.040 --> 00:11:19.160 Now, here's Theophilus getting an opportunity to be a part of the writing of Scripture and his contribution to that. 00:11:19.540 --> 00:11:24.180 I'm not saying that's you or me today, but God has you in a place for a reason. 00:11:24.900 --> 00:11:32.060 In order to be able to make a difference in understanding what it means to go from this transition from spectator to participator is critical. 00:11:33.060 --> 00:11:39.350 God wants to work not only in you, but through you, and to be confident that we need a foundation. --> 00:11:45.640 Verse two. 00:11:45.640 --> 00:11:52.560 Until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 00:11:53.060 --> 00:12:00.280 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during 40 days, and speaking 00:12:00.280 --> 00:12:01.520 about the kingdom of God. 00:12:02.940 --> 00:12:06.220 Here's what Luke is saying is, do you know what's foundational for all of us? 00:12:06.220 --> 00:12:12.840 Really, to be able to move forward is the resurrection of Christ and to understand the importance of this. 00:12:12.840 --> 00:12:20.000 And so in order to do that, Luke is very detailed in the accounts he writes, not only in the gospel of acts, but also in the book or excuse or excuse me 00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:21.860 in the book of acts, also in the Gospel of Luke. 00:12:22.680 --> 00:12:28.840 And when you read those stories, you find Luke is he's identifying specific places and he's naming specific names. 00:12:29.640 --> 00:12:36.680 Even in acts, there's over 80 locations identified and there's over 100 people 00:12:36.680 --> 00:12:40.000 listed, and sometimes even their titles are included. 00:12:40.500 --> 00:12:44.460 And it's a way of Luke saying, if you want to verify this, go check this out. 00:12:45.060 --> 00:12:46.440 You need to understand this. 00:12:47.580 --> 00:12:53.390 Throughout history, some of the accusations charged against Christians were that, the Bible was written later. 00:12:53.440 --> 00:12:58.010 These dates, these names, they're not real figures that we haven't discovered them in history. 00:12:58.380 --> 00:13:04.140 And over time, archeology has revealed again and again that, no, the Bible is incredibly accurate. 00:13:04.200 --> 00:13:07.300 In fact, it's 100% inspired by God. 00:13:08.220 --> 00:13:10.210 And so therefore it's trustworthy. 00:13:10.900 --> 00:13:13.650 There was one individual by the name of Sir Walter William. 00:13:14.240 --> 00:13:15.900 Excuse me, William Mitchell Ramsay. 00:13:15.900 --> 00:13:19.400 He was an archeologist and he lived in the 1800s. 00:13:19.400 --> 00:13:22.420 Died in 1939, if I remember correctly. 00:13:22.640 --> 00:13:26.300 But he was an archeologist who was also an atheist, and he wanted to disprove Christianity. 00:13:27.640 --> 00:13:35.100 And so on his first archeological journey, he decided he wanted to follow after what Luke had written in the Gospel of Luke and acts. 00:13:35.540 --> 00:13:40.630 Because Luke was so detailed, he thought it would be easy to quickly disprove what Luke had said. 00:13:40.700 --> 00:13:44.920 And so he was going to write this book that was going to finally, once and for all, put a death knell to Christianity. 00:13:45.960 --> 00:13:52.960 And so he went on this ten year journey, archeological journey, and people were waiting for his return, anticipating his return, will finally 00:13:52.960 --> 00:13:56.260 revealed to us that work that was going to once and for all destroy Christianity. 00:13:57.200 --> 00:14:03.040 But to everyone's surprise, when he had returned from his archeological journey, what they found was quite the opposite. 00:14:04.200 --> 00:14:05.260 That now Mr. 00:14:05.260 --> 00:14:12.460 Ramsay had actually given his life to Christ, and in his works that he accounted of biblical archeology 00:14:12.460 --> 00:14:13.780 sites that he studied. 00:14:13.780 --> 00:14:15.760 And he wrote multiple books on this. 00:14:15.780 --> 00:14:19.720 One of his early books said this Luke is a historian of the first rank. 00:14:20.460 --> 00:14:23.690 Not merely are his statements of fact trustworthy? 00:14:24.340 --> 00:14:28.580 This author should be placed among the very greatest of historians. 00:14:30.240 --> 00:14:36.380 Now, I love this about Christianity because when you think about religions in general, some of them are based on ideas is. 00:14:37.160 --> 00:14:44.280 And some of them, they try to write about locations, but they have what are referred to as anachronisms, where you have people writing about places and 00:14:44.280 --> 00:14:47.160 events hundreds of years after the fact, and they get it all wrong. 00:14:47.180 --> 00:14:54.240 They have things existing when they weren't even invented yet, and it just discredits that religion in general, when they when they do that kind 00:14:54.240 --> 00:14:54.670 of thing. 00:14:54.860 --> 00:15:01.920 But here, when you see the Gospel of Luke, when it's put to the test or the book of acts, when it's put to that test, what you discover is archeologists 00:15:01.920 --> 00:15:05.730 again and again are coming back and validating what we already know about the Bible. 00:15:06.540 --> 00:15:11.140 And the most important event of all events is the resurrection of Jesus. 00:15:11.860 --> 00:15:15.320 Penned on the resurrection of Jesus is everything for you and for me. 00:15:15.740 --> 00:15:18.700 And so this is why Luke is recording this, especially when you look at the Gospels. 00:15:18.940 --> 00:15:26.100 You realize the Gospels when you read the four Gospels, the majority of the Gospels just deal with the final week of Jesus's life and even 00:15:26.100 --> 00:15:33.240 the final moments of Jesus's life, because the whole point of Jesus's life was about his death, burial, and resurrection so that we can 00:15:33.240 --> 00:15:34.340 find life in him. 00:15:35.260 --> 00:15:37.460 And so Luke's gospel is highlighting that for us. 00:15:37.460 --> 00:15:41.500 And as you get to the book of acts, it's then coming to the resurrection of Jesus. 00:15:41.560 --> 00:15:47.160 And Luke continues to write about particular people in particular places, as if to say, if you doubt this, you can check this. 00:15:47.240 --> 00:15:48.740 Even when Paul wrote. 00:15:48.820 --> 00:15:53.300 First Corinthians 15, he talks about the resurrected Jesus appearing to many people. 00:15:53.360 --> 00:15:57.540 In fact, at one point he appeared to 500 people at one time. 00:15:57.600 --> 00:16:01.780 And Paul says some of them have died, but many of them are still awake and are still living. 00:16:01.780 --> 00:16:03.200 If you don't believe me, go ask them. 00:16:04.560 --> 00:16:11.420 And so there was this credibility Christianity rooted not just in historical fact, but really in the identity of a person. 00:16:11.440 --> 00:16:15.440 All of Christianity is pinned on one person and one event, the resurrection. 00:16:16.340 --> 00:16:21.250 So when you think about different religions, the world, some find their identity or philosophy, some might find their identity in a location. 00:16:21.940 --> 00:16:26.540 We really find our identity rooted in a person who we believe is still alive. 00:16:26.540 --> 00:16:33.580 And the resurrection of Christ is the reason why that God became flesh and gave himself for you and for me. in what God has accomplished for you and for me. 00:16:48.040 --> 00:16:55.360 In fact, when you look at the resurrection of Jesus, it says this in Matthew 28 verse 17, when they saw him, they to the synagogue and they 00:20:19.080 --> 00:20:20.220 ask him to read from the scriptures. 00:20:20.460 --> 00:20:27.700 And so he takes the scroll of Isaiah, chapter 61, and he reads just the first two verses, and then he closes a scroll. 00:20:27.700 --> 00:20:33.680 In those particular verses he's reading, or messianic verses about who the Messiah would be and what the Messiah would do when he cross in the land, they have to cross the Jordan River. 00:24:52.280 --> 00:24:57.140 But John recognizes that when the children of Israel crossed on the Promised Land, they never truly walked faithfully with God. 00:24:58.520 --> 00:25:04.880 But knowing the Messiah is coming, John calls the children of Israel back to the Jordan River to prepare their hearts. 00:25:05.460 --> 00:25:09.440 I mean, God said things like, there's one coming whose shoelaces I am unworthy to untie. 00:25:10.200 --> 00:25:15.370 And John calls Israel back to the Jordan River to prepare their hearts, knowing they had not walked faithfully in that promised land. 00:25:16.100 --> 00:25:20.360 And so it became this place of repentance to open their hearts to the coming of the Messiah. 00:25:20.380 --> 00:25:23.900 When the Messiah comes, they would receive him the baptism. 00:25:23.900 --> 00:25:26.960 The Holy Spirit is baptism, talking about being immersed in the spirit. 00:25:27.340 --> 00:25:57.440 --> 00:25:59.940 And in Romans chapter eight, verse 15 and 16. 00:26:00.580 --> 00:26:04.330 So the idea of the spirit becomes significant for us to understand our identity, that we 00:26:12.040 --> 00:26:13.860 Ephesians chapter one, verse 13 and 14. 00:26:15.400 --> 00:26:21.140 The role of the spirit in your life is critical to understand how the power of God moves to the people of God. 00:26:21.360 --> 00:26:25.960 Now, just because we have the Spirit of God working in us, doesn't mean we're always surrendered to the way the Lord wants to work. 00:26:26.020 --> 00:26:41.220 --> 00:26:48.320 Or in Ephesians chapter five, verse 18 and 19, to be filled with the spirit means to let him have control 00:26:48.320 --> 00:26:49.060 of your life. 00:26:49.380 --> 00:26:51.430 Out of all the things that could determine what you do. 00:26:51.960 --> 00:26:57.760 Understanding who you are in light of who Christ is, and being surrendered to that purpose in this world, is the greatest thing that you could live for. 00:26:58.620 --> 00:27:06.120 So the foundation of trusting what you had to trust in, and the power of God's presence with you, becomes that place you remember originally when Jesus came, the disciples disciples thought of a geopolitical reign of the Messiah, that he would set up a physical kingdom on this world 00:29:30.670 --> 00:29:31.430 and reign. 00:29:31.970 --> 00:29:34.420 And then when he died, they realized, man, it didn't happen. 00:29:34.430 --> 00:29:35.470 What's going to happen to us? 00:29:36.390 --> 00:29:40.290 But now they're starting to learn that Jesus has a different plan for the way that his kingdom would be made known. 00:29:41.350 --> 00:29:46.540 And as Jesus described, this beautiful kingdom that's going to Like Jesus, when's that kingdom coming? 00:29:53.950 --> 00:30:01.230 And Jesus says to him, well, that the detail of that is not for you to know, but rather to understand the privilege it is now the 00:30:46.990 He's introducing us to the kingdom. 00:30:48.330 --> 00:30:54.930 But then in the book of Matthew chapter six, when Jesus teaches us to pray, he says in verse nine, like this. brokenness in this world. 00:32:32.290 --> 00:32:39.310 We may face adversity, but you've already been delivered as a believer, so you get to live in the kingdom of light because you belong to 00:32:39.310 --> 00:32:39.810 Jesus. 00:32:39.870 --> 00:32:47.070 In fact, Romans 14 says it like this for the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness and 00:32:47.070 --> 00:32:48.950 peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 00:32:50.250 --> 00:32:51.350 So is it the fullness of the kingdom? 00:32:51.410 --> 00:32:54.170 No, but the presence of the kingdom?
