00:00:06.820 --> 00:00:08.520 First Thessalonians chapter four, verse 13. 00:00:08.520 --> 00:00:15.720 In fact, we're on week five of a six week series we're going through in the book of Thessalonian Thessalonians, which is an incredible book 00:00:15.720 --> 00:00:17.530 of the Bible we've been studying together. 00:00:17.660 --> 00:00:24.740 Thessalonica represents the second church the apostle Paul established on his second missionary journey in the 00:00:24.740 --> 00:00:25.540 continent of Europe. 00:00:25.600 --> 00:00:27.900 So this is the second church he established in Europe. 00:00:27.920 --> 00:00:29.940 The first was Philippi, second Thessalonica. 00:00:30.540 --> 00:00:31.600 And then it goes on from there. 00:00:32.259 --> 00:00:39.620 But this church was established on the backdrop of persecution, if you remember, as we looked at Paul's life as 00:00:39.620 --> 00:00:44.190 he began his missionary journeys, Paul really faced persecution nearly everywhere that he went. 00:00:44.260 --> 00:00:47.950 There was a few places that were rare, but that became the norm that he would go through persecution. 00:00:48.260 --> 00:00:52.610 In fact, the town he was at just before Thessalonica and Philippi, he was beaten. 00:00:52.780 --> 00:00:53.900 He was thrown in prison. 00:00:54.220 --> 00:01:01.410 And when he was released, he then went on to the town of Thessalonica, Thessalonians or Thessalonica, and he established the church of the Thessalonians. 00:01:01.900 --> 00:01:07.700 And within just three weeks of him preaching in Thessalonica, he persecution breaks out again. 00:01:07.780 --> 00:01:14.750 And in this particular scenario, rather than the Apostle Paul enduring that persecution, he realized it was going to be better for the church if he moved on. 00:01:14.960 --> 00:01:20.590 And he goes on from there to Berea, faces persecution again, then on to Athens, then on to Corinth. 00:01:21.000 --> 00:01:23.400 And adversity followed him wherever he went. 00:01:23.580 --> 00:01:30.680 But this particular church, the church in Thessalonica, Paul had this growing concern for this church because he knew he was there for just a minimal 00:01:30.680 --> 00:01:31.790 amount of time. 00:01:32.340 --> 00:01:37.240 And so he actually sends Timothy back to this church to report to him what he discovers. 00:01:37.680 --> 00:01:42.840 And when Timothy comes back to the Apostle Paul, it is overwhelmingly encouraging. 00:01:43.120 --> 00:01:45.980 What Timothy discovered there, this church. 00:01:46.020 --> 00:01:53.220 Not only did this church find their faith in Jesus deeply enriched, it began to make an impact in the city and 00:01:53.220 --> 00:01:56.520 even beyond that, into what we refer to as modern day Greece. 00:01:56.600 --> 00:01:59.580 The gospel is going throughout all of Greece and even beyond. 00:02:00.300 --> 00:02:07.440 And the Apostle Paul is ecstatic to see how the gospel has moved in their life to transform their life and the world around 00:02:07.440 --> 00:02:08.190 them. 00:02:08.340 --> 00:02:12.880 And so he writes this book of Thessalonians, to continue to encourage this church. 00:02:12.940 --> 00:02:20.020 But not only is it an encouragement to them, it's becoming an encouragement to us here a couple of centuries later, to see how God worked in their midst, 00:02:20.100 --> 00:02:24.660 to challenge us in the 21st century and what it means to follow God. 00:02:24.740 --> 00:02:31.800 And so you see, when you read First Thessalonians chapter one, verse six, they were they birthed this church out of much 00:02:31.800 --> 00:02:32.800 affliction. 00:02:32.800 --> 00:02:33.570 It tells you. 00:02:33.660 --> 00:02:41.150 And in chapter two, chapter two, verse two of the same book, the Apostle Paul talks about his own struggles in being able to preach the gospel to them. 00:02:41.400 --> 00:02:48.540 So in this tremendous adversity, they had deep roots in Jesus, which, if we're being honest with life, that tends 00:02:48.540 --> 00:02:55.660 to be what makes us as individuals a lot more sturdy in the foundation, but beneath us as being 00:02:55.660 --> 00:03:03.020 challenged in that, especially in your own relationship with Christ, you finding out who Jesus is 00:03:03.020 --> 00:03:10.360 in the midst of trials, you're really challenged to discover why Christ really matters to you and therefore 00:03:10.360 --> 00:03:17.480 living in light of that, know that no matter what the circumstances of the world might throw at you will be faithful in Jesus, because 00:03:17.480 --> 00:03:21.810 what you have in Christ transcends anything this world can offer. 00:03:22.160 --> 00:03:27.140 And as we looked at this church, we discover what it means to find transformation in Jesus and living for him. 00:03:27.220 --> 00:03:34.420 In fact, last week when we got to the beginning of chapter four, we talked about what it means to live God's will. 00:03:34.420 --> 00:03:35.520 What is God's will for my life? 00:03:35.600 --> 00:03:42.020 And we discussed, some so many times we approach this as if we've got to find that dot, that one thing that God made me to do. 00:03:42.060 --> 00:03:44.950 And if I do that one thing, then God's going to be happy with me. 00:03:45.220 --> 00:03:48.400 But it really challenged us to think in terms of what God's will is not. 00:03:48.580 --> 00:03:52.090 Not in so much in what you're doing, as much as a relationship with him. 00:03:52.260 --> 00:03:57.500 And the reason for that is because there's nothing you're going to do in this world that's going to impress God. 00:03:57.680 --> 00:03:59.360 Not that God doesn't want you to do good things. 00:03:59.400 --> 00:04:00.510 He sovereign. 00:04:11.120 --> 00:04:18.300 And so the purpose for which God has created you is not primarily established on what you do, but rather the primary reason for which God 00:04:18.300 --> created us all to be royal priests, your royalty in the sense that you belong to a king, your priest, in the sense that you get to connect to God. 00:05:05.680 --> 00:05:07.090 That's the position of a priest. 00:05:07.440 --> 00:05:08.900 They're connected in relationship with the Lord. 00:05:08.900 --> 00:05:10.900 They represent people to God. 00:05:10.980 --> 00:05:18.300 And so as God's people, he calls you even in first Peter chapter three, if you read the chapter, Peter says you are a royal priesthood 00:05:18.300 --> 00:05:22.870 in Jesus, meaning God has called you in this world to represent him. 00:05:23.540 --> 00:05:30.820 But now as we get into first Thessalonians 413 to 510, this is the biggest chunk of scripture we're going to cover together in this book of Thessalonians. 00:05:31.420 --> 00:05:36.970 What we're going to discover is that while we come to know the Lord, it doesn't guarantee that everything's going to go well. 00:05:37.140 --> 00:05:37.260 Right? 00:05:37.300 --> 00:05:39.440 The church of Thessalonica is proof of that. 00:05:39.660 --> 00:05:43.180 And so as we get to see the challenges of this church, we're really going to look at a. 00:05:43.360 --> 00:05:48.960 But today Paul starts off this section with the word but this is a big but actually he's what he's going to talk about. 00:05:49.200 --> 00:05:51.380 We're going to start this section with a big but. 00:05:51.800 --> 00:05:59.090 And as we look at this what he's what he's going to encourage us in is saying, look, even when you theologically understand the reason for what you're created, 00:06:00.040 --> 00:06:04.660 you've got to also understand that there's going to come challenges in your own faith journey. 00:06:05.340 --> 00:06:07.160 And how you respond to that is critical. 00:06:07.160 --> 00:06:12.480 There's a way God wants us to put all that in perspective in how we live for the Lord. 00:06:12.540 --> 00:06:15.500 In fact, Paul is going to focus on this word called grief. 00:06:16.680 --> 00:06:20.340 He wants us to realize that in this world, we're going to experience a grieving. 00:06:21.200 --> 00:06:23.420 And that's completely normal, in fact. 00:06:23.420 --> 00:06:25.620 Romans chapter eight talks about this. 00:06:25.620 --> 00:06:29.280 Romans eight verse 22 tells us all of creation is groaning. 00:06:29.660 --> 00:06:34.280 And in Romans chapter eight verse 23, even our soul groans within us. 00:06:34.420 --> 00:06:41.460 And the reason it groans is because the curse of sin that we experience in this life, you see the destruction of sin and 00:06:41.460 --> 00:06:48.560 the decay of life, whether whether it's things around you falling apart or relationships and figuring, finding 00:06:48.560 --> 00:06:55.920 unhealthy relationships that you have or ultimately even in death, we experienced the destruction of 00:06:55.920 --> 00:06:56.560 life. 00:06:56.580 --> 00:06:58.400 And because of that, our soul grieves. 00:06:58.400 --> 00:07:00.960 You don't even have to tell us to be sad about those things. 00:07:01.080 --> 00:07:03.540 We just naturally experience it that way. 00:07:03.660 --> 00:07:11.060 And it's a way our soul is crying out to us to recognize who you grieve because you're made for so much more. 00:07:11.320 --> 00:07:13.690 But it's helpful for you to put that grief into deals with discouragement. 00:07:29.680 --> 00:07:33.270 And this is really an undersell, because we're going to talk about it in terms of death. 00:07:34.160 --> 00:07:36.980 Like how do we how do we do that in terms of death? 00:07:36.980 --> 00:07:39.800 Because death for all of us is the ultimate enemy. 00:07:40.600 --> 00:07:46.200 And that's where we really understand that the curse of what this life is by death. 00:07:46.220 --> 00:07:48.520 Because you and me, we weren't made for that. 00:07:49.160 --> 00:07:51.160 It's why we grieve at the loss of life. 00:07:51.160 --> 00:07:53.550 Where we grieve at the loss really, of anything because. 00:07:53.880 --> 00:07:55.940 Because we weren't made for the loss of things. 00:07:55.960 --> 00:07:57.160 We were made for life. 00:07:57.520 --> 00:08:01.710 That's why Jesus says in John 14 six, I am the way, the truth, and the life. 00:08:02.240 --> 00:08:03.820 And God doesn't just give life. 00:08:03.820 --> 00:08:06.970 He's life itself, and he made you to belong in him. 00:08:08.180 --> 00:08:12.180 Unfortunately, what humanity chose from the beginning is ultimately other than that. 00:08:12.800 --> 00:08:17.310 In the Garden of Eden, when God made Adam and Eve right? 00:08:18.000 --> 00:08:23.590 God says to Adam and Eve, don't eat of the fruit, because in the day you do it, you shall surely not die. 00:08:25.880 --> 00:08:27.700 God didn't make you for death. 00:08:28.740 --> 00:08:36.100 Death is what we choose when we reject the Lord, and rather choose to put ourselves in the position of Lord of our own life, thinking 00:08:36.100 --> 00:08:37.620 we know better than God. 00:08:38.039 --> 00:08:40.280 And ultimately it separates us from him. 00:08:40.659 --> 00:08:41.960 And it produces death. 00:08:41.960 --> 00:08:44.720 Not just physical death, but spiritual death. 00:08:45.740 --> 00:08:52.920 It brings death to our life and we experience the, permeating effect of the curse 00:08:52.920 --> think in terms of grieving, we can grieve in life for all sorts of reasons, but it's ultimately 00:09:07.680 --> 00:09:10.540 related to the loss of things. 00:09:10.540 --> 00:09:14.540 And the greatest extent of loss is experienced in death. 00:09:14.600 --> 00:09:16.460 And Paul here is going to talk to us about this. 00:09:16.500 --> 00:09:18.700 He's not he's not going to pretend like life isn't hard. 00:09:18.700 --> 00:09:25.740 He's not going to tell you to stuff your feelings, but he really wants to help us put it into perspective in light of what we have in Jesus and 00:09:25.740 --> 00:09:26.740 the hope that is to come. 00:09:27.660 --> 00:09:31.170 So encouragement that helps us deal with discouragement. 00:09:31.940 --> 00:09:32.520 Let me give you a point. 00:09:32.640 --> 00:09:36.370 Number one, we should read some verses here in order to deal with discouragement. 00:09:36.420 --> 00:09:36.950 Here's what we need. 00:09:37.700 --> 00:09:39.520 is important. 00:09:48.860 --> 00:09:54.250 But rather than let that define us, we need something that transcends it in order to be able to move forward. 00:09:55.140 --> 00:09:56.150 We need a greater hope. 00:09:57.080 --> 00:10:05.000 And you discover this idea, this theme over and over again in Scripture and in fact, in the book of Philippians 00:10:05.000 --> 00:10:05.860 chapter one. 00:10:12.600 --> 00:10:19.620 The apostle Paul here is really describing life, sort of like a blueprint and really looking at your own life in this 00:10:19.620 --> 00:10:22.460 way, as if there's a building being built here and there's a blueprint. 00:10:22.520 --> 00:10:29.760 And sometimes when you look at a blueprint, some people look at a blueprint and they can't even imagine what that's going to look like because, well, they really need to see it in 00:10:29.760 --> 00:10:30.300 hand. 00:10:30.340 --> 00:10:37.420 Like, let me it's nice to see it on paper, but I really need to see it in person or sometimes you might go through the building process and you're thinking, man, I don't know 00:10:37.420 --> 00:10:38.470 that this is going to happen. 00:10:38.660 --> 00:10:40.300 Like, what confidence do I have? 00:10:40.320 --> 00:10:42.980 Especially when that blueprint your own life, right? 00:10:43.020 --> 00:10:50.200 And Paul says like this in Philippians verse six, and I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion 00:10:50.200 --> 00:10:52.130 at the day of Jesus Christ. 00:10:52.820 --> 00:10:59.220 I mean, he's really writing this to remember a church in Philippi where Paul was imprisoned because of his faith. 00:10:59.280 --> 00:11:00.840 This is a church that endured persecution. 00:11:01.640 --> 00:11:08.600 And sometimes when you're going through adversity in life, it has this tendency of rocking you and you think to yourself, is this really going to work itself out? 00:11:08.920 --> 00:11:15.120 And Paul is saying, look, you keep entrusting yourself to the one who has proven all things, the one that will work it out. 00:11:15.340 --> 00:11:23.040 This will culminate in exactly what Jesus said trust the blueprint 00:11:32.160 And I don't know how many of you are runners in our congregation this morning. 00:11:32.440 --> 00:11:39.840 I don't describe myself as a runner, but sometimes I run like and sometimes to hike Half Dome and I found out it's like a 15 mile round trip hike. 00:11:50.320 --> 00:11:57.340 And I thought to myself, rather than suck, win the entire time and not appreciate the beauty around me, I should probably jog a 00:11:57.340 --> 00:12:02.340 little bit so I can I can soak in the beauty of life around me as I'm doing this hike. 00:12:02.340 --> 00:12:07.560 And so this summer I've been running, and every time I run, this is what happens to me. 00:12:07.580 --> 00:12:09.480 And maybe this is true for all runners. 00:12:09.480 --> 00:12:15.000 I could be the exception, I don't he's saying you've been surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, and they're really not a witness of you, but rather a witness to you saying, 00:13:19.480 --> 00:13:20.280 you can do this. 00:13:20.320 --> 00:13:21.210 And here's how you know you do. 00:13:21.300 --> 00:13:25.190 You can do this because the people that have gone before, you have done this faithfully in the Lord. --> 00:14:37.200 And the Bible has passages that we looked at. 00:14:37.220 --> 00:14:42.710 And let me give you one more that just reminds you over and over again of the faithfulness of the Lord. 00:14:43.300 --> 00:14:46.000 Trust the master craftsman, right? 00:14:46.000 --> 00:14:48.510 You may not be able to see the light of the tunnel, but you know. 00:14:48.760 --> 00:14:49.380 You know what? 00:14:49.660 --> 00:14:50.940 Who holds tomorrow. 00:14:50.940 --> 00:14:53.460 You may not know what it holds right, but you know who holds it. 00:14:54.280 --> 00:14:57.380 And so therefore, it's this encouragement to continue to trust your life in him. 00:14:57.380 --> 00:15:00.940 Second Corinthians 417 for this is light, momentary affliction. 00:15:01.240 --> 00:15:02.510 Putting it all in perspective. 00:15:03.680 --> 00:15:10.920 It's preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen, but to the things that are unseen, for 00:15:10.920 --> 00:15:14.150 the things that are seen or transient, but the things that are unseen or eternal. 00:15:15.260 --> 00:15:17.960 And this is what the Apostle Paul is encouraging us to. 00:15:17.960 --> 00:15:21.920 In this passage, first Thessalonians 413, he says it like this. 00:15:23.320 --> 00:15:30.320 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as those who do not 00:15:30.320 --> 00:15:30.880 have hope. 00:15:31.720 --> 00:15:38.780 Let me say a couple of things as we look at this passage, because what Paul is doing here, he's saying like this world is it's got difficulty and I don't 00:15:38.780 --> 00:15:40.240 I don't want to take away from that. 00:15:41.280 --> 00:15:48.320 So if you're going through adversity like it's important as the body of believers and the brokenness of this world to learn to grieve in a healthy way, 00:15:48.520 --> 00:15:49.220 and we should grieve. 00:15:49.280 18 years, Jesus comes to her and says in verse 12 he says, woman, you have been made free. 00:21:27.400 --> 00:21:31.300 And that word free is that word for redemption, ransomed. 00:21:31.340 --> 00:21:31.820 And it tells you. 00:21:31.940 --> 00:21:36.980 And immediately she stood up, and as soon as she stood up, the religious leaders started arguing with Jesus. 00:21:37.020 --> 00:21:40.100 I can't believe you did this on a Sabbath, you know? 00:21:40.100 --> 00:21:47.120 And it's like how it's to get us to recognize in the Gospels how stupid we can be sometimes that when redemption 00:21:47.120 --> 00:21:54.140 is made known in our lives, we'd rather argue over technicalities and religion than to let the liberation of Jesus be made known in our life. 00:21:55.220 --> 00:22:02.490 And this woman has been made free, and that physical freedom is the indicator of the ultimate freedom that Jesus would bring for you and for me. 00:22:02.900 --> 00:22:09.940 That point number one is really important, right? 00:23:17.980 --> 00:23:25.040 So as you think about this idea of ransom, salvation and death, I mean, those are themes in Scripture, and I hope you're of all of that being told, because this is particularly important to your own life and the hope that you carry 00:23:36.680 --> 00:23:37.320 in this world. 00:23:37.400 --> 00:23:38.300 So that let me 00:24:20.220 That's why the Bible says in first Corinthians chapter one, the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness, and to the world that looks so stupid 00:24:20.220 --> 00:24:25.820 that you would follow someone that died and especially call him, calling him your King and God. 00:24:27.240 --> 00:24:30.040 And the cross is the most humiliating way to go. 00:24:31.360 history where our God dies, became the symbol of resurrection, hope that 00:24:54.240 --> 00:24:56.860 the grave didn't defeat him. 00:24:56.920 --> 00:24:59.940 The greatest enemy we have is people Messiah would suffer for us and that we would find freedom in him. 00:25:24.380 --> 00:25:31.730 And then when you get to the New Testament, you discover Jesus preaching that message, and he was ultimately executed by professional executioners. 00:25:31.760 --> 00:25:33.390 If anyone in history died. 00:25:33.400 --> 00:25:34.680 He certainly died. 00:25:34.680 --> 00:25:36.380 Thrown in a grave for three days. 00:25:36.480 --> 00:25:37.970 I mean, he was dead beyond dead. 00:25:39.220 --> 00:25:41.420 And even the disciples gave up on him. 00:25:43.560 --> 00:25:49.860 But yet they returned back to Jesus with such a passion that they willingly gave their life as martyrs. 00:25:49.860 --> 00:25:50.160 Why? 00:25:50.800 --> 00:25:53.290 Because they couldn't deny they had seen a dead man walking. 00:25:54.340 --> 00:25:59.660 And for this purpose, this truth claim it changed everything for them. 00:26:00.660 --> 00:26:02.170 And it's the same for you and for me. 00:26:02.280 --> 00:26:09.300 The resurrection of Christ is paramount to our identity, what we have as God's people and the hope that we walk with in this world. 00:26:09.340 --> 00:26:16.460 It helps us put everything into perspective that no matter what the circumstances of this world may bring, I have a greater hope that transcends it 00:26:16.460 --> 00:26:22.140 all because of what Jesus has done for That's the that's the way of saying it again. 00:26:47.380 --> 00:26:48.560 Those who have passed away. 00:26:49.420 --> 00:26:56.030 And so he's writing to the church, and they're really worried that, they really strongly believe Jesus is going to return at any moment. 00:26:56.140 --> 00:26:57.600 Church at Thessalonica believes that. 00:26:57.640 --> 00:27:05.240 So they're passionately going around saying, Come to Jesus because he can come back at any moment, and they're just sharing what Jesus has done, the liberation from sin 00:27:05.240 --> 00:27:06.660 and the Messiah. 00:27:06.720 --> 00:27:10.650 But then here comes their concern is that before Jesus comes back, some of them are dying. 00:27:11.780 --> 00:27:14.680 Now they're worried what's going to happen to us, right? 00:27:14.740 --> 00:27:16.200 God, what is what is my future? 00:27:16.200 --> 00:27:21.220 And so the Apostle Paul is explaining this to them, is that God will bring with him those who have 00:28:26.020 --> 00:28:27.500 celestial presence of God. 00:28:27.500 --> 00:28:28.420 It's the third heaven. 00:28:28.420 --> 00:28:33.980 It's straight into the presence of the Lord, which, as followers of Jesus, that is what we all believe in, right? 00:28:34.020 --> 00:28:39.780 As Christians, biblical Christians, we believe in one heaven, which is the celestial kingdom and the promise. 00:28:39.780 --> 00:28:43.600 Just as the thief received that the moment we leave this world, we go straight to the presence of the Lord. 00:28:44.720 --> 00:28:49.440 The Bible says in Second Corinthians five eight, to be absent from the body is to be present with the present with the Lord. 00:28:50.260 --> 00:28:53.520 Paul says a similar thing in Philippians chapter one, verse 21 to 23.
