don't know if you've if you've captured this as we've gone through our Psalms together, I have I have started the Psalms off with what I would say is more of a 00:00:28.300 --> 00:00:28.960 negative psalm. 00:00:29.680 --> 00:00:31.600 And then the following week I do more of a positive psalm. 00:00:31.940 --> 00:00:39.030 So that's the way last week we looked at a very heavy psalm that is more to be is a more positive psalm. 00:00:43.440 --> 00:00:50.520 And so I really try to temper this for no matter how you are encouraged and spurred on in the faith, sometimes as people, we like to psalm, Psalm one 145 is thinking about not only the current generation, but future generations to 00:01:24.400 --> 00:01:30.780 come, spurring them on the faith and the impact that it can make and in 00:01:47.120 There were saints that have gone on before us who are faithful to their own relationship with the Lord. 00:01:47.140 --> 00:01:54.180 That made some sort of impact in our own life to lead us to the place that we're in, that we can hand the torch off to the next generation, which 00:01:54.180 --> 00:02:01.220 should be important for all of us to think about, because we're always one generation away from the gospel, dying within our country, our 00:02:01.220 --> 00:02:02.260 community. 00:02:02.260 --> 00:02:08.080 And so thinking about how my own relationship with God impacts called if I Were the Devil. 00:02:34.860 --> 00:02:42.220 And this, the reading that he did on the radio in 1996 was actually a repeating of something that he read in 1965. 00:02:42.440 --> 00:02:42.600 Right. 00:02:42.680 --> 00:02:45.100 I'm old enough to remember 1996. 00:02:45.220 --> 00:02:52.460 I am not old enough to remember 1965, but it has been known as somewhat of an interesting reading 00:02:52.460 --> 00:02:59.720 that Paul Harvey did online, because it deals with where he sees the direction of America going and thinking 00:02:59.720 --> 00:03:02.890 and wanting to wake us up in the negative trajectory. 00:03:03.000 --> 00:03:06.250 He sees it in order for us to correct course. 00:03:06.720 --> 00:03:08.580 So what he writes is more from the negative side. 00:03:08.580 --> 00:03:12.430 We'll look at Psalm 145, dealing more from the positive side in a minute. 00:03:12.780 --> 00:03:14.480 But I want you to, as I get ready to read this. 00:03:14.960 --> what he says, because I think there's some parts of it that tends on the or flirt with 00:03:32.460 --> 00:03:34.680 the idea of legalism, which I am not a fan of. 00:03:34.800 --> 00:03:35.500 Right. 00:03:35.660 --> 00:03:39.600 But what he says is, I think, important for just any generation to think of. 00:03:39.720 --> 00:03:44.860 And I hope for all of us that we have the kind of mind that we're willing to listen to people, even if we disagree with them. 00:03:45.120 --> 00:03:49.560 I mean, it's okay to disagree with people when you think about the wisdom of past generations. maybe even just 00:07:24.300 --> 00:07:26.020 for us as individuals. 00:07:28.040 --> 00:07:35.040 But I want us to know that when we gather as a church, our desire and goal is not to just avoid the negative or run away 00:07:35.040 --> 00:07:42.040 from the bad, but to understand what Jesus wants to do in us and through us is far more beautiful, and a 00:07:42.040 --> 00:07:48.600 path with him is far more significant than just walking away from things that can be harmful. 00:07:49.720 --> 00:07:56.720 And as you look at the idea of what Paul Harvey is saying, I want us to consider now the pages of Scripture and what David is declaring 00:07:56.720 --> 00:08:03.940 to us, because David is really saying to us the other side of the coin from the positive perspective, as he considers the future 00:08:03.940 --> 00:08:10.520 generations and the impact that God can do in his own life for the for the benefit of those around him. 00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:19.160 When you look at Psalm 145, I want you to know this is a psalm that's 3000 years old, but the truth of what's contained in 00:08:19.160 --> 00:08:21.620 it still, still ring true for us today. 00:08:21.680 --> 00:08:23.880 In fact, that's the case for all of Scripture. 00:08:23.880 --> 00:08:25.090 That truth is timeless. 00:08:25.960 --> 00:08:32.960 But this particular psalm has been so significant throughout history that the Jewish people have especially included it in their regular 00:08:32.960 --> 00:08:34.620 daily liturgy. 00:08:35.020 --> 00:08:42.500 And what I mean that there's even a sections of the Talmud that promote this psalm in such a way that it says that anyone that is considered a faithful Jew should 00:08:42.500 --> 00:08:45.160 read this psalm no less than three times a day. 00:08:45.340 --> 00:08:48.820 And when you do, there is a special blessing that comes along with it. 00:08:49.060 --> 00:08:51.650 Now, I want you to know that that's the way of traditionalism. 00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:52.780 Scripture doesn't say. 00:08:52.820 --> 00:08:57.780 You know, read this one psalm and incentivizes you with, certain things that you might want. 00:08:57.800 --> 00:08:57.980 Right. 00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:04.530 But rather it is speaking to the uniqueness and power of what this Psalm is and living it out with our lives. 00:09:05.340 --> 00:09:09.040 When David's perspective here is critical for all of us. 00:09:09.040 --> 00:09:14.980 And when you look at the Psalms, this is the last recorded Psalm that we have that King David wrote. 00:09:15.480 --> 00:09:16.480 Now, I don't mean that chronologically. 00:09:17.600 --> 00:09:24.820 Like when you read the Psalms, it's important to know that the order of these Psalms are placed for us are not necessarily the order that they were written in, but rather, 00:09:24.900 --> 00:09:29.780 as you read through the Psalms, you find that Psalm 145 is the last psalm that's attributed to King David. 00:09:30.220 --> 00:09:35.990 And so here's a psalm some 3000 years old, the truth of it still ringing, ringing for us today. 00:09:36.340 --> 00:09:43.170 And the idea of what we want to focus on in this chapter is finding a brighter future, a call to generational worship. 00:09:44.280 --> 00:09:51.400 To think about the whole scope of my own relationship with the Lord, and how what God is doing order to do that, we've got to begin with the mentality of passing on the praise to fuel that faith for future generations. 00:11:14.260 --> 00:11:21.340 And when David starts off this Psalm, he wants you to know that begins in you, to understand the critical ness of what God wants 00:11:21.340 --> 00:11:26.660 to do in this church by seeing the singularity of my own personal relationship in Jesus. and ever. 00:11:37.600 --> 00:11:43.690 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. 00:11:44.980 --> 00:11:48.160 And what David is essentially saying to us is our sometimes as a pastor, when I say things like I give an announcement or something, I in my mind think, man, how many more times I'm 00:13:41.500 --> 00:13:42.520 going to have to repeat that? 00:13:42.540 --> 00:13:44.040 So everybody hears that, right? 00:13:44.080 --> 00:13:51.020 Because I know sometimes that I can say things and I can be in so many different gatherings saying things had they had no ability to free themselves, that God would step in his mercy and love, and rescue them and 00:22:11.640 --> 00:22:17.640 call them his own, and give them this place of promise and blessing in relationship to him. 00:22:17.700 --> 00:22:24.880 In fact, when you look throughout the Old Testament, you'll see this phrase and mention or the idea of it in different ways in Deuteronomy 26 verse eight, 00:22:25.000 --> 00:22:32.110 and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great deeds of terror, and with signs and wonders. 00:22:32.500 --> 00:22:34.640 So you see this the idea of great deeds or mighty acts. 00:22:34.680 --> 00:22:36.200 It's that event of Exodus. 00:22:36.280 --> 00:22:39.840 And again Exodus seven, look throughout the Bible, there is a particular descriptor about God that I think is most critical for you to receive. 00:26:21.300 --> 00:26:24.500 And that is the verses that you're reading here in verse eight and nine. 00:26:25.520 --> 00:26:32.910 And the reason I say that is because these verses aren't made up by David, like David wasn't inspired by the Lord to be the inventor of these that phrase in Exodus 34, verse five and six that describes God to us has been considered by the writers of the Old New 00:26:48.480 --> 00:26:51.820 Testament to be such a critical understanding of It's as if to say, if you're going to let something take precedent in your life and your own understanding of God, you need to let this one be preeminent. 00:27:07.880 --> 00:27:09.760 Because when understand the reason for which we are created, and when we turn to the Lord, we need to know how God's going to receive us. 00:27:56.180 --> 00:28:03.400 And so this particular identity is critical for us, because in verse ten he goes on and says this, all your work shall give thanks to you, O Lord, and all 00:28:03.400 --> 00:28:05.440 your saints shall bless you. 00:28:06.560 --> 00:28:13.090 And the idea of sainthood is very much wrapped up in what these verse eight and nine is described to us now when it comes to the sainthood. 00:28:14.300 --> 00:28:21.920 There is a way that some Christians have learned sainthood related to tradition, church tradition. 00:28:21.920 --> 00:28:22.060 Right? 00:28:22.860 --> 00:28:28.420 But then there is a way in which sainthood is referenced in Scripture according to what the Bible says. 00:28:29.160 --> 00:28:36.630 And I want you to know, there are some things that we do in churches based on tradition that don't always have a biblical basis. 00:28:37.320 --> 00:28:39.380 I'm not saying tradition is a bad thing. 00:28:39.380 --> 00:28:45.450 There's always a place for tradition, but at some point tradition can even run contrary to the Bible. 00:28:45.920 --> 00:28:48.710 And it's more important to follow the Bible than it is tradition. 00:28:49.780 --> 00:28:54.930 And when it comes to the idea of sainthood, it can be one of those things that we have learned more traditionally than biblically. 00:28:55.320 --> 00:28:58.810 So some of us might think, well, sainthood is what you become when you die. 00:28:59.160 --> And in fact, sometimes we we'll refer to them as patron saints, and people might even, like, bow down to them and even pray to them like there's can be some, some 00:29:12.040 --> 00:29:14.860 teaching that's so reverent to sainthood that it becomes that. 00:29:14.900 --> 00:29:17.840 Now I have seen traditions that do that. 00:29:17.840 --> 00:29:21.920 And I want you to know there's not necessarily a biblical basis for it, but just for funsies. 00:29:22.340 --> 00:29:26.980 I mean, I picked my favorite, like, if you want to know my favorite saint, it's definitely Saint Nicholas, right? 00:29:26.980 --> 00:29:29.940 Because for obvious reasons, he is the giver of gifts. 00:29:29.940 --> 00:29:34.840 So if you're going to pick one Saint Nick, like, just give me what I want, right? 00:29:35.000 --> 00:29:42.540 But when it comes to the idea of sainthood, one of one of the interesting things that I also find shocking about Saint Nick, if you ever study him Saint 00:29:42.540 --> 00:29:46.590 Nick is considered the patron saint of pawnshops. 00:29:46.820 --> 00:29:49.140 It's like, man, it started off so good for him. 00:29:49.140 --> 00:29:50.450 And they went really bad quick. 00:29:50.460 --> 00:29:52.660 Like to be the patron saint of pawn shops. 00:29:52.660 --> 00:29:55.620 I would haunt people like I really change who I am, right? 00:29:55.690 --> 00:29:57.390 Like, I don't even know if you can do that, but. 00:30:00.180 --> 00:30:07.300 But when you think about the idea of pawn shops, like I think it's important to know, like if you ever look at a pawn shop, the icons of 00:30:07.300 --> 00:30:10.160 a pawn shop are three bags of gold. 00:30:10.840 --> 00:30:18.230 And the tradition for that actually comes from Saint Nick, who a story goes in his town, there were three young ladies that wanted to get married, couldn't because they couldn't afford the dowry. 00:30:18.960 --> 00:30:24.100 And so Saint Nick visited the family and just dropped off three bags of gold without making himself known. 00:30:24.660 --> 00:30:26.160 But the family knew where it came from. 00:30:26.540 --> 00:30:28.270 And so that became the image of pawn shops. 00:30:28.340 --> 00:30:35.460 But the idea of pawn shops really started with Franciscan monks for families that were experiencing hardship as a way for them to get back on their 00:30:35.460 --> 00:30:35.810 feet. 00:30:36.340 --> 00:30:40.100 Now, over time, the world grabbed Ahold of that, monetized it, and made what pawnshops are today. 00:30:40.240 --> 00:30:41.160 Which isn't great, right? 00:30:41.280 --> 00:30:46.030 But it really started as a ministry within within the church and trying to help people in difficult positions. 00:30:46.060 --> 00:30:48.680 And so that's why Saint Nick was picked as that patron saint. 00:30:48.940 --> 00:30:53.140 But either way, I want you to know, there's tradition and there's what the Bible says. 00:30:54.040 --> 00:31:00.860 And when it comes to the idea of sainthood, here's what the Bible says about you and me is if that we're if we're in Jesus, we're all saints in Christ. 00:31:02.160 --> 00:31:09.220 Because the idea of lens by which I view the world. 00:31:50.460 --> 00:31:57.700 It's the lens by which I view God myself, those around me and the world I walk in, whether whether it's economically, politically, Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints, first Corinthians one through 00:32:26.180 --> 00:32:33.220 the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus called to be saints, I want you to know the church of Corinth was the first church in the 00:32:33.220 --> 00:32:33.770 New Testament. 00:32:34.120 --> 00:32:38.100 And if they're going to be called saints, nobody here has a problem with the idea of being called a saint. 00:32:38.140 --> 00:32:38.640 Right? 00:32:38.680 --> 00:32:42.650 But here's what's critical when it comes to sainthood. 00:32:44.000 --> 00:32:48.940 It's to recognize that the reason I receive that position in Jesus is not because of me. 00:32:50.320 --> 00:32:53.230 It's not because I'm here to impress God with who I am. 00:32:54.380
