I the greatest well, the thing that I enjoyed most about my interaction with pastor Jay 00:01:01.660 --> 00:01:06.620 is how quickly I could respond back in a very negative get away from me answer. gracious towards me. 00:01:16.960 --> 00:01:23.960 And when I was starting college, I remember I got to a place where I was just in a faith crisis, and I came to him and said, I'll give you some time this morning I'm going to share with you from Psalm 88. 00:05:14.700 --> 00:05:18.240 I would encourage you guys, go ahead and turn to Psalm 88. 00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:25.240 And as you turn, let me give you kind of an overview of a way to look at Psalms. 00:05:25.240 --> 00:05:29.420 There's 150 Psalms, and there's really kind of three different categories. 00:05:30.280 --> 00:05:33.280 As you're reading a psalm that each psalm is going to fall into. 00:05:33.340 --> 00:05:39.560 And so this will help you out just in your quiet time as you're in your studying to see what is the background. 00:05:39.560 --> 00:05:46.460 Now the Psalms are the songbook of Israel, and there's really like it's their worship songs. 00:05:47.120 --> 00:05:54.280 But what you find is there's a lot greater Of variety in their subjects of worship than a lot of times what 00:05:54.280 --> 00:05:55.330 we sing in church. 00:05:55.640 --> 00:06:01.000 So the first set of psalms that you'll find, and it's not like the first 50 or this, then the next 50 and the next 50. 00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:03.460 They're really all scattered throughout the Psalms. 00:06:03.660 --> 00:06:07.690 But the first category would be what we would call Psalms of orientation. 00:06:08.980 --> 00:06:16.540 These are the foundational Psalms that tell you about the goodness of God, about how he's ordered creation, and 00:06:16.540 --> 00:06:22.380 essentially like, if you will follow God in God's ways, then you will experience blessing in your life. 00:06:22.380 --> 00:06:24.760 Psalm one is an excellent example of this. 00:06:24.780 --> 00:06:30.770 You know how blessed is the man who does not walk in the ways of the wicked, but instead delights in the law of the Lord. 00:06:31.180 --> 00:06:38.560 And if you will do this, you will be like a tree planted by the waters, with roots that will go down deep and endure the storms and 00:06:38.560 --> 00:06:41.160 leaves and fruit that produces a harvest. 00:06:41.880 --> 00:06:43.600 So, Psalms of orientation. 00:06:43.880 --> 00:06:47.200 We do this with our kids, with some of the songs that we teach our kids. 00:06:47.300 --> 00:06:48.320 You know, Jesus loves me. 00:06:48.320 --> 00:06:50.300 This I know for the Bible tells me so. 00:06:50.300 --> 00:06:51.700 Jesus loves the little children. 00:06:52.220 --> 00:06:59.360 We teach one another theology through our songs, and there's a great section 00:06:59.360 --> 00:07:02.040 of Psalms that teach bedrock theology. 00:07:02.940 --> 00:07:09.980 But if you live in the world, you realize that the world doesn't always work according to that kind of perfect 00:07:09.980 --> 00:07:10.960 plan and model. 00:07:11.080 --> 00:07:16.560 It doesn't always work that if you will, just trust Jesus and follow him, everything will go well in your life. 00:07:16.560 --> 00:07:22.940 You will be protected from all evil, and you will just prosper financially and in your health and in your relationships. 00:07:24.100 --> 00:07:30.480 Sometimes things go wrong and there's a whole genre of psalms for these called psalms of disorientation. 00:07:31.360 --> 00:07:35.240 And so just the name is in the, the descriptions and the meaning. 00:07:35.240 --> 00:07:36.320 I'm disoriented. 00:07:36.320 --> 00:07:36.620 Why? 00:07:36.620 --> 00:07:41.720 Because I thought if I followed God this way, then it would work out this way. 00:07:41.940 --> 00:07:44.710 But instead I'm in the middle of suffering. 00:07:44.940 --> 00:07:48.420 I'm in the middle of people betraying me and abandoning me. 00:07:48.500 --> 00:07:51.540 I cannot see where God is in this. 00:07:51.700 --> 00:07:56.160 And there's a whole group of psalms that express this. 00:07:56.160 --> 00:07:59.260 Some of the ones that you know really deeply. 00:07:59.660 --> 00:08:01.200 Think of Psalm 22. 00:08:01.560 --> 00:08:03.540 It's the one that Jesus quoted on the cross. 00:08:03.540 --> 00:08:06.240 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? 00:08:06.440 --> 00:08:08.340 And then it goes into, why are you far from me? 00:08:08.340 --> 00:08:09.520 Why can't I hear you? 00:08:09.520 --> 00:08:10.700 interesting things. 00:08:16.200 --> 00:08:22.120 Number one, we have very little in the way of modern praise and worship that approaches this. 00:08:22.200 --> 00:08:27.280 You know, we don't get together and sing songs on Sunday that are like, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? 00:08:27.320 --> 00:08:32.020 And it would be a little bit weird if we did, but to be honest, I feel like that sometimes. 00:08:32.700 --> 00:08:33.780 God, where are you? 00:08:33.940 --> 00:08:34.940 What is going on? 00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:35.460 Why? 00:08:35.860 --> 00:08:40.440 Why is everything going the opposite of what I thought it would if I followed you? 00:08:41.159 --> 00:08:48.260 And what I love is that God has put in Scripture songs, scripture, psalms that express 00:08:48.260 --> 00:08:49.620 these things in our heart. 00:08:50.060 --> 00:08:55.270 Now, to me, some of the most beautiful songs we're going to, by the way, we're going to look at a psalm of disorientation this morning. 00:08:56.060 --> 00:08:59.860 But to me, I think the most beautiful psalms probably are the last category. 00:08:59.880 --> 00:09:01.280 These are the Psalms of reorientation. 00:09:03.140 --> 00:09:03.940 These are the songs. 00:09:03.960 --> 00:09:08.800 When I have been through the dark waters, I have been through the trials. 00:09:08.800 --> 00:09:12.560 I have experienced deep pain and suffering. 00:09:13.120 --> 00:09:15.970 And now I'm on the other side and from the other side. 00:09:16.440 --> 00:09:23.800 When I look back at what I've been through now, I can see that he was with me the whole way, that he was protecting 00:09:23.800 --> 00:09:28.960 me, that he delivered me from the darkness and some great ones with that. 00:09:28.960 --> 00:09:30.440 Psalm 2732. frameworks, it's pretty easy as you read through a psalm to 00:09:39.160 --> 00:09:44.560 pick out where the writer of the psalm was in here, and that's good to know sometimes. 00:09:44.580 --> 00:09:47.140 Otherwise you can be like, you know what is going on. 00:09:47.140 --> 00:09:54.140 I thought this was supposed to be encouraging, but it is encouraging when you realize that God allows studying this framework, psalms of orientation, disorientation, and reorientation 00:10:16.920 --> 00:10:22.610 actually reminded me of a gospel tool that we use quite a bit in our church. famines that are happening. 00:12:13.140 --> 00:12:15.360 I see people that are suffering and they're starving. 00:12:15.940 --> 00:12:19.780 I experience the way that people have treated me and hurt me. 00:12:19.940 --> 00:12:23.650 And if I'm going to be honest, the way that I've treated and hurt other people. 00:12:23.680 --> 00:12:31.020 And so even though I see some evidence of God's perfect design, I feel disoriented because 00:12:31.020 --> 00:12:32.720 I see a broken world. 00:12:32.780 --> 00:12:38.860 And the question is if there really is a good God and he really did design things good and perfect. 00:12:39.280 --> 00:12:41.020 Why am I living in such brokenness? 00:12:42.260 --> 00:12:43.330 And the answer is sin. 00:12:44.380 --> 00:12:48.720 Sin is when God shows you what to do and you do the opposite. 00:12:48.780 --> 00:12:51.260 You run from God's good and perfect law. 00:12:51.260 --> 00:12:54.060 God's good and perfect design to do your own way. 00:12:54.120 --> brokenness. 00:13:17.720 --> 00:13:21.890 And so people do all kinds of things to try to escape from their brokenness. 00:13:22.660 --> 00:13:25.050 Some people will try to live the hyper perfect life. 00:13:25.080 --> 00:13:32.100 You know, you live in a dysfunctional family and you think, if I just get straight A's, and if I'm the captain of the sports team and I am, 00:13:32.240 --> 00:13:36.300 the head of, I get the key positions in band. 00:13:36.300 --> 00:13:39.220 If I just be perfect in all of these things, it'll work out. 00:13:39.800 --> 00:13:44.200 But that never works and it snaps you into a deeper and darker brokenness. 00:13:44.920 --> 00:13:52.400 Some people think, well, if I just achieve, achieve, achieve, if I, climb the ladder of success, at some point I will feel fulfilled 00:13:52.400 --> 00:13:54.740 and these things won't matter to me. 00:13:54.760 --> 00:13:56.220 But it doesn't work. 00:13:56.260 --> 00:14:02.020 The higher you climb, the further you fall, the emptier you feel and you're stuck in brokenness. 00:14:02.940 --> 00:14:08.710 Some people think that if I just do a bunch of religious things that will make up for it, it'll make up for my sin. 00:14:09.120 --> 00:14:11.140 It'll, it'll balance it out. 00:14:11.460 --> 00:14:14.400 I, I can do good works, and that's going to take care of it. 00:14:14.440 --> 00:14:21.460 But listen, it doesn't matter how many little old ladies you help cross the street, it doesn't matter how many times you 00:14:21.460 --> 00:14:25.090 show up in a church service that doesn't take away the sin. 00:14:25.280 --> 00:14:26.620 It doesn't take away the brokenness. 00:14:27.140 --> 00:14:33.200 And as a matter of fact, the more I try to achieve religious perfection, the darker I feel, the more broken I feel. 00:14:33.520 --> 00:14:38.420 And then some people give up on trying to perfect the brokenness and they just try to escape it. 00:14:38.460 --> 00:14:39.240 They try to numb. 00:14:39.240 --> 00:14:46.240 They self-medicate with drugs, with alcohol, with promiscuous sexual relationships, with gambling, with just 00:14:46.240 --> 00:14:53.700 super addiction into video games and hobbies and anything I can do to take my mind off the fact that I'm a wreck and the world's a wrecked. 00:14:54.000 --> 00:14:54.460 Guess what? 00:14:54.460 --> 00:14:55.540 It doesn't work. 00:14:55.880 --> 00:15:03.140 You're right in the middle of that brokenness, and the Bible tells us there's only one way out of that trap of sin and 00:15:03.140 --> 00:15:05.960 out of that brokenness, and that's through Jesus Christ. 00:15:05.960 --> 00:15:12.620 And so that third circle there, it's to show us that God Himself took on flesh. 00:15:12.840 --> 00:15:13.760 He entered the world. 00:15:13.760 --> 00:15:17.780 He lived the perfect life, the life that you and I could never live. 00:15:18.820 --> 00:15:22.080 And the Bible says that the wages of sin, the payment of sin, is death. 00:15:22.840 --> 00:15:28.700 And when Jesus died on the cross because he had no sin, he wasn't paying for his own sin. 00:15:29.760 --> 00:15:33.430 He was taking on my sin, and he was taking on your sin and he was paying. 00:15:33.480 --> 00:15:38.820 He was taking on the full wrath of God for every broken and wicked thing that we've done. 00:15:39.940 --> 00:15:42.900 And he died on that cross, and he was buried, but he didn't stay buried. 00:15:42.900 --> 00:15:44.580 On the third day he rose again. 00:15:44.580 --> 00:15:46.910 That arrow there shows that he rose again. amazing when I'm in Christ, when I put my faith in Christ, when I trust him, 00:16:23.480 --> 00:16:28.040 God will take the hardest and the worst things that have ever happened in my life. 00:16:39.480 And I know some of you guys have experienced that. 00:16:39.480 --> 00:16:46.540 You've experienced incredible tragedy and terrible things, and then you have, instead of living as a victim for those things 00:16:46.540 --> 00:16:48.760 the rest of your life, you've given them to Jesus. 00:16:49.180 --> 00:16:53.260 And you've watched Jesus use those things to heal other people. 00:16:54.380 --> 00:16:55.390 That's a reorientation. 00:16:56.320 --> 00:16:57.340 So that's a framework. 00:16:57.680 --> 00:17:05.319 And today, since I've given you that happy good news, let's now go to Psalm 88, which is the bleakest psalm in the entire scriptures, 00:17:05.599 --> 00:17:09.160 the darkest one that we can find. 00:17:09.359 --> 00:17:13.050 And as you read it, you might be like, why is this in the Bible? 00:17:13.300 --> 00:17:20.020 It is just it's like being in a depression therapy service that ends in depression. 00:17:20.060 --> 00:17:24.240 So with that who's hurting, and you offer the little light of comfort that you have, 00:34:12.600 --> 00:34:19.600 because there is nothing that speaks to the power of the gospel, like a wounded, hurting person
