the book of Genesis 00:00:09.720 --> 00:00:13.750 where, Joseph is going to reveal himself to his brothers. 00:00:14.100 --> 00:00:21.260 Now, if you remember where we are so far in the story in the life of Joseph, the end of the book of Genesis, the last dozen or so chapters of 00:00:21.260 --> 00:00:24.100 Genesis, you deal with the life of Joseph. 00:00:24.180 --> 00:00:26.580 In fact, that's much of what Genesis is about. 00:00:26.600 --> 00:00:32.540 The first 11 chapters sort of lays out the picture of why God created us and man's rebellion against God. 00:00:32.619 --> 00:00:39.680 And then from chapter 12 on, he starts working through the lives of individuals to show his grace delivered to us from Abraham to Isaac 00:00:39.680 --> 00:00:40.700 to Jacob. 00:00:40.700 --> 00:00:43.630 And now, at the end of this book, we're looking at the life of Joseph. 00:00:44.220 --> 00:00:49.400 And if you follow it in the story, you'll remember at the age of 17, his brothers were jealous of Joseph. 00:00:49.400 --> 00:00:56.660 They hated Joseph to the point that they took Joseph captive, and they sold him as a as a slave to some Ishmaelites 00:00:56.660 --> 00:00:58.840 who were on a journey to Egypt. 00:00:59.080 --> 00:01:03.400 And once they got to Egypt, they sold Joseph as a slave in Egypt. 00:01:03.620 --> 00:01:06.340 And Joseph served as a slave while he was a slave. 00:01:06.840 --> 00:01:11.560 He was accused of something that he did not do, but he was thrown into prison because of that. 00:01:11.680 --> 00:01:19.020 And he spent over a decade of his life either serving as a slave or being cast into prison before he was finally set free. 00:01:19.180 --> 00:01:23.330 A very difficult life as a young man, 17 years old, he's in a place of comfort. 00:01:23.560 --> 00:01:25.380 His family's taking care of him. 00:01:25.380 --> 00:01:30.780 They're certainly have a lot of monetary wealth as a family in comparison to the people around them. 00:01:30.820 --> 00:01:32.350 So they're well off. 00:01:32.460 --> 00:01:39.690 But Joseph was ripped from his home, taken to a foreign land and a place where he did not speak the language to serve as a slave and then a prisoner. 00:01:40.420 --> 00:01:47.420 And when you hear about a life like that, and I would just simply stop there and ask the question, how do you think he would respond if he 00:01:47.420 --> 00:01:48.930 ever saw his brothers again? 00:01:49.760 --> 00:01:56.960 If you think about the tendency of the average human being, I can tell you a lot of our human nature is to 00:01:56.960 --> 00:02:02.640 not respond very kindly, graciously, or forgiving towards people who wronged us. 00:02:02.720 --> 00:02:06.580 In fact, if I just laid out that story and that's where we stopped, you would be like, let me just write the rest for you. 00:02:06.580 --> 00:02:06.760 Right? 00:02:06.760 --> 00:02:11.840 Joseph, from that point, if he ever saw his brothers again, they better look out, right? 00:02:11.960 --> 00:02:14.010 He they better beg him for mercy. 00:02:14.060 --> 00:02:20.840 He's going to be vengeful and vindictive and full of wrath and at the most mild, he would be a man of justice. 00:02:20.840 --> 00:02:21.840 Right? 00:02:22.060 --> 00:02:26.110 But that's not what you see in the life of Joseph at all. 00:02:26.840 --> 00:02:34.320 I mean, it's incredible to read his story and how he patiently, faithfully walked with the Lord to 00:02:34.320 --> 00:02:40.810 see how God would work through his circumstance to bring about something far greater than he could ever produce in his own strength. 00:02:41.900 --> 00:02:45.220 And because he trusted in the faithful hand of the Lord. 00:02:45.340 --> 00:02:52.840 Not only was it healing for his own soul, but it also became a blessing to his, the very brothers that were opposed to him and 00:02:52.840 --> 00:02:55.530 not just his brothers, but future generations. 00:02:55.580 --> 00:03:00.620 Even us today reap the blessing of what God did in Joseph's life. 00:03:00.620 --> 00:03:01.830 And we'll talk about that. 00:03:02.300 --> 00:03:08.980 But, sometimes even in the immediate when we think about difficulty, we go through, God is a God that brings beauty from ashes. 00:03:09.980 --> 00:03:17.100 he does incredible things as God's people, as we walk faithfully through with him through difficult circumstances, and 00:03:17.100 --> 00:03:24.560 to see how that takes place and to think it doesn't just make an impact on our generation now, but you can establish a 00:03:24.560 --> 00:03:28.600 legacy that God creates through you because of faithfulness to him. 00:03:29.080 --> 00:03:31.320 And but the question is, how do we get there? 00:03:31.360 --> 00:03:33.460 And what does that look like when we walk in it? 00:03:33.540 --> 00:03:37.380 And this is exactly what Genesis chapter 45 is about. 00:03:37.560 --> 00:03:45.020 And in verse one, this is where Joseph reveals himself and you would expect a hardened heart, a vengeful attitude. 00:03:45.020 --> 00:03:51.120 But Genesis 45, verse one, Then Joseph could not control himself before all those who stood by him. 00:03:51.200 --> 00:03:53.380 And he cried, make everyone go out from here! 00:03:53.520 --> 00:03:57.080 So no one stayed with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers. 00:03:57.700 --> 00:04:02.320 If you remember how the story went, Joseph sold into slavery, into Egypt. 00:04:02.320 --> 00:04:06.650 He was eventually set free out of prison because he interpreted a dream for Pharaoh. 00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:10.410 And that dream was about seven years of plenty and seven years of famine. 00:04:10.600 --> 00:04:16.890 And Joseph told Pharaoh, God is telling you need to prepare for the seven years of phantom famine through the seven years of abundance. 00:04:17.160 --> 00:04:24.240 Pharaoh is so impressed with Joseph that he puts him in charge of taking care of that for Egypt, and to the point that he makes Joseph's second 00:04:24.240 --> 00:04:25.990 in command of all of Egypt. 00:04:26.660 --> 00:04:33.760 And not only is now Joseph helping Egypt survive an extreme famine, but Egypt has now become a resource to the people 00:04:33.760 --> 00:04:40.680 groups around them, so much so that the children of Israel have now journeyed to Egypt to ask for help. 00:04:40.860 --> 00:04:43.320 And they took one journey to Egypt to ask for food. 00:04:43.340 --> 00:04:48.940 They brought money with them to buy it, and they had no idea that the very person they to what degree do I have any sort of relationship with you in Joseph's mind? 00:05:09.520 --> 00:05:17.130 Remember, at 17 years old, being ripped from his home, he knows he and his brothers were still at a maturing stage of life. 00:05:17.300 --> 00:05:20.220 You know, I'm not I'm not saying, 17 years old. 00:05:20.220 --> 00:05:22.360 You can't be an impressive 17 years old. 00:05:22.360 --> 00:05:22.760 You're old. 00:05:22.760 --> 00:05:27.560 But I am saying sometimes there's a lot of 17 year olds that just don't have wisdom yet. 00:05:27.640 --> 00:05:27.940 Right? 00:05:28.000 --> 00:05:31.780 And you got to go through life circumstances in order to attain that. 00:05:31.820 --> 00:05:33.370 And so Joseph knows that. 00:05:33.460 --> 00:05:36.400 But when his brothers show up, he wants to know what kind of men have you? 00:05:36.600 --> 00:05:37.050 Have you become? 00:05:37.940 --> 00:05:45.140 And through his interaction with his brothers, he discovers that they are they are repentant before the Lord over how 00:05:45.140 --> 00:05:46.500 they treated Joseph. 00:05:46.660 --> 00:05:54.080 And they're modeling that through the way they treat their youngest brother, Joseph, who was, who was or excuse me, youngest brother Benjamin, who was Joseph's 00:05:54.080 --> 00:05:58.040 only other full blooded brother, and Joseph. 00:05:58.040 --> 00:06:05.040 Now, seeing that their hearts have been changed, he is at this state of really revealing himself to 00:06:05.040 --> 00:06:08.420 his brothers in a place of humility and weeping. 00:06:08.960 --> 00:06:16.080 And I love the way he does it in verse number one, he he's in this room now with all these Egyptian leaders, and he calls everyone out but 00:06:16.080 --> 00:06:21.880 just his family, because the issue he wants to deal with is not for everyone else to be aware of. 00:06:22.560 --> 00:06:29.840 This is a matter that's happened between he and his family, and one that he wants to reconcile with those parties that have done wrong and 00:06:29.840 --> 00:06:30.930 have been wronged. 00:06:31.200 --> 00:06:34.970 And so he has everyone else leave, and he just engages with his family. 00:06:35.560 --> 00:06:39.320 And in verse two, and he wept aloud so that the Egyptians heard it. 00:06:39.400 --> 00:06:41.100 And the household of Pharaoh heard it. 00:06:41.760 --> 00:06:44.010 And Joseph said to his brothers, I am Joseph. 00:06:44.620 --> 00:06:46.640 Is my father still alive? 00:06:46.740 --> 00:06:50.990 But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed at his presence. 00:06:51.740 --> 00:06:58.940 And this would have been a pretty remarkable moment for his brothers, if you can imagine in their shoes they thought his brother, their brother was 00:06:58.940 --> 00:07:00.480 dead by this point. 00:07:00.500 --> 00:07:01.820 They hadn't seen him in over a couple of decades. 00:07:02.560 --> 00:07:04.350 They think he's likely no more. 00:07:04.700 --> 00:07:09.060 And all of a sudden to find out that he's not dead, that he's actually in charge of Egypt. 00:07:09.240 --> 00:07:12.000 That's that is a lot to wrap your head around in that moment. 00:07:12.040 --> 00:07:19.060 But here's what we see in the life of Joseph was we see a man that is he is amazing to understand what 00:07:19.060 --> 00:07:25.780 he went through and how the goodness and sweetness of Christ, the Lord still drips from his life. 00:07:26.740 --> 00:07:28.530 And the same thing could be true for you. 00:07:29.420 --> 00:07:31.510 The things that you've gone through in your life. 00:07:31.680 --> 00:07:38.680 We've all we all face adversity as human beings because we walk in a broken world, but we don't want that adversity to make us 00:07:38.680 --> 00:07:41.780 bitter to what God desires for us in our life. 00:07:42.640 --> 00:07:49.610 And here you're reading the story of Joseph, and it's this in this moment of ash, God's bringing forth beauty. 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:51.860 And how did he do that? 00:07:51.860 --> 00:07:53.340 What is his secret? 00:07:53.500 --> 00:07:56.840 What made Joseph capable of doing such a thing? 00:07:57.360 --> 00:08:01.440 And in this story, we find out with Joseph, he doesn't leave it a secret for us. 00:08:01.480 --> 00:08:04.200 In fact, he doesn't think it should be a secret to us. 00:08:04.220 --> 00:08:11.320 He becomes very clear in declaring to us what enabled him to be able to be so compassionate and 00:08:11.320 --> 00:08:16.060 forgiving to his brothers, when his brothers didn't treat him with the same compassion and care for his life? 00:08:16.120 --> 00:08:22.760 And it says to you very clearly in verse five, and he says, and now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here. 00:08:23.340 --> 00:08:26.120 For God sent me before you to preserve life. 00:08:26.640 --> 00:08:28.790 And in verse eight he repeats the similar idea. 00:08:29.460 --> 00:08:32.320 So it was not you who sent me here, but God. 00:08:32.340 --> 00:08:39.500 He has made me a father to Pharaoh and Lord of all his house and ruler over all the land 00:08:39.500 --> 00:08:41.280 of Egypt. 00:08:41.980 --> 00:08:49.140 And what Joseph is acknowledging here is that while there may be certain things that people do in this world, there is a greater sovereign hand 00:08:49.140 --> 00:08:50.680 over it all. 00:08:50.980 --> 00:08:56.440 And Joseph's come to learn that regardless of what people do or don't do, those things in life are just temporal. 00:08:56.580 --> 00:09:03.680 Whether whether it's you experience good things through the hands of people, whether you experience bad things through the hand of people before the eyes of 00:09:03.680 --> 00:09:04.080 the Lord. 00:09:04.080 --> 00:09:08.240 All of those things are just temporal and what you ultimately have in God. 00:09:08.280 --> 00:09:13.080 It works out for good and for Joseph and for all of us there. 00:09:13.080 --> 00:09:19.860 It's either in this world we'll see reconciliation and great things happen as God orchestrates it or in what is to come. 00:09:19.900 --> 00:09:24.960 But in all things, God promises us that he will work together all things for good in him. 00:09:24.960 --> 00:09:32.580 Romans 828 and so what Joseph is saying is, rather than put his eyes on what took place in the past, he 00:09:32.580 --> 00:09:37.100 understood that God was still calling him to so much more in his life. 00:09:37.620 --> 00:09:45.200 And so rather than let his past control him leather than, than let, let what others had done to him dictate the kind of person he would be, 00:09:45.400 --> 00:09:47.220 the kind of future he would step into. 00:09:47.640 --> 00:09:51.450 He wanted to walk in that and what the Lord had called him to in him. 00:09:52.200 --> 00:09:59.580 And so Joseph, rather than put his eyes on his brothers, he put his eyes on the Lord and the promises that God had given him because Joseph 00:09:59.580 --> 00:10:00.100 had. 00:10:00.100 --> 00:10:07.360 Seen the faithfulness of God work not only in his father and his grandfather, but also in his own life. 00:10:08.560 --> 00:10:15.990 And so Joseph chose to be defined by the goodness of who God was, rather than simply the circumstances of what people had done to him. 00:10:16.620 --> 00:10:23.940 But because of that, because he found his identity in the Lord, it doesn't mean that it ignores 00:10:23.940 --> 00:10:26.140 the hardship of Joseph's circumstance. 00:10:26.840 --> 00:10:33.980 Look, just because you want to walk in the faithfulness of the Lord and not give other people power and control over you to dictate, that doesn't mean you can't 00:10:33.980 --> 00:10:35.860 also acknowledge things were hard. 00:10:36.500 --> 00:10:38.950 And Joseph is certainly doing this in the first three verses. 00:10:39.140 --> 00:10:44.170 His demeanor, the one of weeping, the one of because of his mindfulness towards the Lord, it gave him the opportunity to do two things. 00:10:58.300 --> 00:11:01.300 One, he could be honest about what happened to him. 00:11:02.460 --> every theologian agrees with this, but I think even in the life of Joseph at 17 years old, there was a little bit of arrogance 00:12:12.600 --> 00:12:19.700 in his life where he boasted before his brothers and intentionally gave his father a false report about his brothers because he wanted to look 00:12:19.700 --> 00:12:21.100 better than his brothers. 00:12:21.720 --> 00:12:23.990 And that just fueled the hatred that his brothers had. 00:12:24.700 --> 00:12:26.920 But it was in the humility of that moment. 00:12:27.820 --> 00:12:29.520 It didn't justify what his brothers did. 00:12:29.580 --> 00:12:34.540 But I think that adversity drew Joseph in to his relationship with the Lord. 00:12:35.340 --> 00:12:42.900 And I think that God uses adversity for that very thing of help but think, when you look at Joseph's life and you might look at your own self as you think about what Joseph went through. 00:13:03.120 --> 00:13:10.740 And for most Americans, what we endure and the hardship we face is but a fraction of 00:13:10.740 --> 00:13:12.120 what Joseph had to go through. 00:13:12.120 --> 00:13:19.560 But yet for some of us, I'll be nice and not say all of us or most of us, but for some of us, even 00:13:19.560 --> 00:13:26.600 in the fraction of that adversity we don't relate to the grace that Joseph demonstrates 00:13:26.600 --> 00:13:28.120 in this moment. 00:13:28.520 --> 00:13:35.620 And to be honest, it's because in our lives we look more to the circumstance of what we 00:13:35.620 --> 00:13:42.840 went through than to the greatness of God's grace made known over our lives, that we let the past 00:13:42.840 --> 00:13:47.850 define us more than the presence of what Jesus wants us to walk through in him. 00:13:48.200 --> 00:13:49.610 It's not to 00:15:34.260 --> 00:15:41.460 this world, to think no matter how hard it gets, that becomes the most beautiful opportunity for 00:15:41.460 --> 00:15:48.560 you as you walk faithfully with the Lord to show the goodness of who he is and what ultimately defines who you are and what matters to 00:15:48.560 --> 00:15:49.260 you. 00:15:49.360 --> 00:15:52.440 Do not give power to the to other people to 00:16:33.280 --> 00:16:34.830 This woman is incredible. 00:16:35.800 --> 00:16:43.180 but what's interesting about both of these people, for Ayaan Hirsi Ali, she was she was raised in Somalia, in --> 00:17:30.680 Now, whether or not you agree with that, but what I want to say is this in the midst of darkness, there is an awareness among people 00:17:30.680 --> 00:17:34.280 that all the systems this world is offering to us are broken. 00:17:34.960 --> 00:17:41.990 It may bring temporary happiness to your life or temporary satisfaction, but in the end, ultimately you recognize that it's grace. 00:20:07.100 --> 00:20:14.280 These are not the only gifts that you get in God's grace, but there are certainly three gifts that we need to be mindful of because of what Christ has done that you have in the Lord. 00:20:35.800 --> 00:20:41.110 Knowing when Paul's writing some of these letters to the church, they're facing tremendous hardship. 00:20:41.200 --> 00:20:47.580 I mean, maybe their own lives are experiencing difficulty or maybe from the outside. 00:20:47.580 --> 00:20:54.760 People are persecuting them, but he wants them to rest in the grace and peace of God, only made known because of what Christ has done and 00:20:54.760 --> 00:20:55.960 because of what Christ has done. 00:20:55.960 --> 00:20:58.220 We can have peace in our relationship with the Lord. 00:20:58.220 --> 00:21:05.410 It's not to say that things won't be difficult, but we can rest in peace as God's people, knowing that what we have in the Lord endures forever. 00:21:06.680 --> 00:21:13.720 And so it becomes not only valuable to in the story with Joseph, but it's the theme of all of Paul's letters grace and peace to you from God 00:21:13.720 --> 00:21:15.020 our father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:21:15.500 --> 00:21:18.160 Three things we receive from the Lord in our lives because of his grace. 00:21:18.260 --> 00:21:19.520 Point number one is this forgiveness. to the grace of God, you don't just have forgiveness. 00:26:41.000 --> 00:26:48.210 It's wonderful to know your past is taken care of, but while your past is taken care of, you also need to know what life for flourishing, which is a tree of blessing. 00:34:30.199 --> 00:34:37.500 And rather than take the hand of God's blessing, we take the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which is to live
