every day to understand what Christ has done for us. 00:00:43.280 --> 00:00:50.760 And I know this morning I've got the difficult task which is keeping every age focused on what we're 00:00:50.760 --> think about the importance of today, I think it's significant to remind us that as we celebrate, that's 00:01:11.760 --> 00:01:13.440 not how the first Easter started. 00:01:14.660 --> 00:01:21.760 In fact, the demeanor of the disciples on that first Easter Sunday was one of feeling 00:01:21.760 --> 00:01:29.060 dejected, feeling, feeling defeated, being at lost, being fearful and concerned about what 00:01:29.060 --> 00:01:35.060 the future would hold for them because of their identity as followers of Jesus. 00:01:35.120 --> 00:01:37.560 They just saw what had happened to Jesus. 00:01:37.560 --> 00:01:43.080 And now, being some of their closest followers, their concern became for their own life. 00:01:43.260 --> 00:01:50.520 And in fact, in John chapter 20, verse 19, it says for us on the evening of that day, the first 00:01:50.520 --> 00:01:56.100 day of the week, the doors being locked, where the disciples were for fear of the Jews. 00:01:57.060 --> 00:02:04.740 But what is saying for us that first Sunday morning, when the when the Jewish people were, gathered together, the followers of Jesus that 00:02:04.740 --> 00:02:11.420 their faces weren't one of elation and celebration, but rather, as it says in this passage of fear. 00:02:12.260 --> 00:02:19.300 And you can imagine maybe some of those conversations on that first morning before they hear of the resurrected Christ, what the disciples 00:02:19.300 --> 00:02:26.360 may have been saying, I mean, even thinking about Mary personally, being at the cross, watching the death of 00:02:26.360 --> 00:02:34.120 her own son, the way she would be mourning, having watched such horrific 00:02:34.120 --> 00:02:37.110 ending to her son's life. 00:02:37.280 --> 00:02:44.400 I mean, even the disciples the week before, walking with Jesus into Jerusalem, seeing the crowds shout Hosanna! 00:02:44.400 --> 00:02:46.560 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 00:02:46.660 --> 00:02:48.540 Save us now, oh son of David! 00:02:49.600 --> 00:02:53.750 The crowds roaring at the cheer of Jesus, riding on the back of a donkey. 00:02:54.700 --> 00:03:02.180 And yet, just one week later, being crucified, I can imagine the disciples together in this room asking the question, where 00:03:02.180 --> 00:03:03.310 did it all go wrong? 00:03:04.460 --> 00:03:05.300 What happened? 00:03:06.260 --> 00:03:13.300 And even Peter, in these moments, knowing he was the one that turned his back on Jesus after he so boldly declared over 00:03:13.300 --> 00:03:15.040 my dead body, Christ will. 00:03:15.080 --> 00:03:16.500 Will I let this happen to you? 00:03:16.560 --> 00:03:23.660 It's Peter that denies Jesus three times, and in these moments, the state of the disciples would 00:03:23.660 --> 00:03:29.020 have been of extreme discouragement, disheartened, feeling like they lost. 00:03:29.960 --> 00:03:37.020 But then all of a sudden, the very next verse says to us, Jesus came and stood among them and 00:03:37.020 --> 00:03:41.340 said to them, peace be with you. 00:03:41.640 --> 00:03:48.460 You think of the first words Christ says to his disciples, what a powerful word Jesus is reflecting upon with them. 00:03:48.600 --> 00:03:56.100 Because this is a this is a messianic declaration from the very beginning of the book of Genesis that Jesus understood that 00:03:56.100 --> 00:04:03.200 from the time of Adam and Eve, when mankind sinned against God, that we lost that place of peace, we lost peace and 00:04:03.200 --> 00:04:06.190 our connection to this, the relationship to this world. 00:04:06.680 --> 00:04:10.980 We lost peace in our relationship with one another because of sin. 00:04:11.380 --> 00:04:16.519 But ultimately we lost peace in our relationship with God. 00:04:16.680 --> 00:04:24.200 And when Jesus gives this declarative word, what he is saying to the Jewish mind is this thought of shalom, this holistic restoration 00:04:24.200 --> 00:04:25.880 in all of the Bible. 00:04:25.880 --> 00:04:32.980 This is the first time this word has truly been used, and it's been able to be delivered, that what Jesus 00:04:32.980 --> 00:04:40.370 came to accomplish for us was achieved on the cross, that we may once again have peace in our relationship with God, 00:04:40.500 --> 00:04:44.920 and the hope that one day he will return and restore all peace throughout the earth. 00:04:46.120 --> 00:04:50.250 But here's the question how do we find that peace? 00:04:51.280 --> 00:04:58.320 I think even the last few years in our world, how tumultuous things have been, people feuding 00:04:58.320 --> 00:05:05.150 over the thoughts of a of a virus, whether or not you get a shot or you don't, you wear a mask or you don't. 00:05:06.060 --> 00:05:07.320 Wars take. 00:05:07.500 --> 00:05:12.480 Place and in places like Afghanistan and Ukraine and Israel. 00:05:13.260 --> 00:05:18.820 Inflation going rampant, all this turmoil in the world around us. 00:05:18.820 --> 00:05:24.740 And here we see Jesus in this passage giving this declaration of peace. 00:05:24.820 --> 00:05:31.820 How do we find peace when your notes this morning, just to cover this briefly for 00:05:31.820 --> 00:05:39.130 us and verses 20 to verse 22, Jesus shares with us where we can find the hope of an enduring peace, 00:05:39.240 --> 00:05:45.140 something that transcends the difficulty of the circumstances in which we face day to day. 00:05:45.860 --> 00:05:46.840 Where does it come from? 00:05:47.820 --> 00:05:50.120 And the next verse, Jesus says to us. 00:05:50.400 --> 00:05:51.320 he encourages us. 00:05:51.320 --> 00:05:58.720 And this is the first point in your notes to trust and the reliability of the resurrection, to trust in 00:05:58.720 --> 00:06:00.340 the reliability of the resurrection. 00:06:00.420 --> 00:06:01.920 And Jesus says it like this. 00:06:02.060 --> 00:06:07.720 And when he had said this, he showed them both his hands and his side. 00:06:08.700 --> 00:06:15.920 Jesus wants them to deal with the tangible physical reality of the resurrection, to see the significance of 00:06:15.920 --> 00:06:22.440 what's just taken place, that this isn't just spiritually coming from the grave, but also in bodily form. 00:06:22.440 --> 00:06:23.470 Jesus has overcome. 00:06:23.980 --> 00:06:31.120 In fact, the Apostle Paul says it like this in first Corinthians chapter one verse 18, the preaching of the cross is to them that 00:06:31.120 --> 00:06:37.940 perish foolishness, but to us which are saved, it is the power of God. 00:06:38.060 --> 00:06:45.260 The Apostle Paul gives the declaration of the significance of what the cross represents, that eternal God would bear the cup 00:06:45.260 --> 00:06:52.860 of wrath that we could be found in freedom in him, eternally forgiven in the Lord. 00:06:53.180 --> 00:06:57.960 And so Jesus gives us this tangible demonstration of this resurrection. 00:06:57.980 --> 00:07:02.540 Because there was no doubt in this first century Jesus was dead. 00:07:04.900 --> 00:07:12.170 In fact, the apostle Paul tells us in first Corinthians 15 verse 14, If Jesus has not been raised from the grave, comes to Jesus in this first century, there was no doubt among his followers that Jesus was dead. 00:07:25.920 --> 00:07:33.280 He was killed by professional executioners, declared dead, thrown in a tomb with no medical treatment, and a giant rock 00:07:33.280 --> 00:07:34.420 rolled in front of it. 00:07:35.660 --> 00:07:39.440 Jesus was dead and the disciples were scared. 00:07:40.480 --> 00:07:43.220 But yet suddenly everything changed. 00:07:43.840 --> 00:07:45.040 And the question becomes what? 00:07:45.180 --> 00:07:52.520 What caused these disciples to go from being fearful resurrection of Jesus. 00:07:59.820 --> 00:08:06.940 In fact, when you read in the Old Testament there were prophecies that declared Jesus was going to die on the cross, and Isaiah 53 and 00:08:06.940 --> 00:08:12.100 Psalm 22 and Isaiah would be or, excuse me, Jesus would be resurrected from the grave. 00:08:12.160 --> 00:08:19.300 And in Psalm chapter 16, verse 8 to 10, and not only that, you have people like the apostle Paul in first Corinthians 00:08:19.300 --> 00:08:24.460 15 verse six saying, hundreds of people saw the resurrected Jesus. 00:08:24.500 --> 00:08:26.620 If you don't believe me, go ask them. 00:08:27.880 --> 00:08:35.100 Not only did the apostle Paul write in the in the New Testament, but the other New Testament authors attested to 00:08:35.100 --> 00:08:41.940 the resurrection of Jesus to the point that they went on to give their life for Christ even in the first century. 00:08:42.520 --> 00:08:48.240 You can read historians that didn't follow after Jesus and Trajan. 00:08:58.100 --> 00:09:05.400 All all people from the first century that weren't even followers of Jesus, talking about the resurrection of Christ and the faith 00:09:05.400 --> 00:09:07.280 that his followers put into it. 00:09:09.100 --> 00:09:14.480 Death, we learned in these moments, had no victory over him. 00:09:15.980 --> 00:09:23.200 The disciples go from fearful to bold followers in order to discover this peace that 00:09:23.200 --> 00:09:23.940 endures. 00:09:24.280 --> 00:09:29.260 It's significant for us to find trust in the reliability of the resurrection. gloom, one of one of thoughts of despair, one of 00:09:50.760 --> 00:09:57.760 thoughts of defeat, to suddenly the reality of this resurrection helps them recognize the importance of what's just You know, it's. 00:10:07.080 --> 00:10:14.120 It's impossible for us as people, or maybe I should say, nearly impossible for us to rejoice when we're 00:10:14.120 --> 00:10:20.700 afraid to rejoice, when we feel that there's the world is falling apart around us and in us. 00:10:21.180 --> 00:10:24.290 When those types of situations happen, we become very insular. 00:10:25.100 --> 00:10:30.070 We start to think about our struggles and how to how to preserve ourselves and our own well-being. 00:10:30.760 --> 00:10:37.940 But when our circumstances change and we know our position is secure and we have what we need, suddenly we 00:10:37.940 --> 00:10:44.940 go from thinking internally to all of a sudden externally, we begin to rejoice over, over the circumstances 00:10:44.940 --> you truly find that freedom, and the church is given that beautiful opportunity to 00:13:17.400 --> 00:13:24.500 declare that, I very mindful this morning when we started ABC in 2008, we 00:13:24.500 --> 00:13:28.220 started with just a couple of families and one family in particular. 00:13:28.220 --> 00:13:34.010 I remember very prayerful that we would start a church in this city and God would do an incredible work. 00:13:34.880 --> 00:13:42.380 And, when I think about looking in a room like this today, over, over the joy of knowing what Jesus continues to do in the lives of his people, it 00:13:42.380 --> 00:13:49.400 is it is powerful that the same God who's moving in the first century is still alive and active in 00:13:49.400 --> 00:13:50.880 his people even now. 00:13:51.000 --> 00:13:58.020 And when you consider if God's people could just grab a hold of the power of the resurrection and let that not only impact in them, 00:13:58.040 --> 00:14:05.040 but also through them, that this is just the beginning of what God can do through his people as we follow him faithfully. 00:14:06.920 --> 00:14:14.620 Tertullian in the first excuse me in the second century, he said this about the church knowing adversity is still going to come and 00:14:14.620 --> 00:14:19.080 the challenges of life are not going to end until the return of Jesus. 00:14:20.440 --> 00:14:25.810 But --> 00:14:49.440 People saw the first century church, second century church. 00:14:49.440 --> 00:14:56.520 In fact, the first 250 years of church history was faced by persecution, though the worst of it even came before, 00:14:57.120 --> 00:15:04.280 in the early third century, with a man by the name of Diocletian that the church went so boldly into the 00:15:04.280 --> 00:15:06.980 face of persecution that there. 00:15:07.100 --> 00:15:12.500 Their tenacity towards the resurrection of Christ inspired others to get to know this Jesus. 00:15:13.620 --> 00:15:19.680 And when the church grabs hold of the power of the resurrection, it gives us the privilege of living on purpose. 00:15:20.180 --> 00:15:24.720 And the next is this point number four receive new life. 00:15:25.000 --> 00:15:29.520 Because of the resurrection, we receive new life because of the resurrection. 00:15:30.020 --> 00:15:32.110 And this is where Jesus does something strange. 00:15:32.660 --> 00:15:39.780 Verse 22 and it says, and when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. 00:15:40.740 --> 00:15:46.120 Now I know some of you have had to put up with some pretty bad morning breath at some point in your life, right? 00:15:46.140 --> 00:15:51.350 All of us have experienced what that's like, maybe personally or talking to someone that wakes up that way. 00:15:51.560 --> 00:15:55.470 But when you read this passage, Jesus isn't just coming at this with morning breath. 00:15:55.600 --> 00:15:57.510 This is three day dead morning breath. 00:15:57.540 --> 00:15:57.920 Right. 00:15:57.920 --> 00:16:00.630 And he's breathing this on the disciples. 00:16:01.090 --> 00:16:04.720 If he's going to do something like this must be pretty important, right? 00:16:04.720 --> 00:16:05.700 What is Jesus doing? 00:16:05.700 --> 00:16:07.080 He's like peace be with you. 00:16:07.080 --> 00:16:14.240 And he just says like, it's an interesting thing Jesus is doing, but what Jesus is saying is so profoundly 00:16:14.240 --> 00:16:14.990 incredible. 00:16:15.940 --> 00:16:22.940 I mean, this is the reason, as Christians, when we gather the building to us is not important because what God is doing in 00:16:22.940 --> 00:16:25.360 us is far more important than any place that we gather. 00:16:26.000 --> 00:16:33.240 Because you become the temple of God, you become the place of God because the presence of God's Spirit indwells his people. 00:16:34.200 --> 00:16:40.020 And we have the promise, or at least the statement of this starting to be seen in John
