we've worked through this section of scripture in the in the book of Romans. 00:00:08.940 --> 00:00:13.220 Chapter nine, ten and 11 are sort of a cohesive unit in the in the book of Romans. 00:00:13.260 --> 00:00:20.300 So if you kind of thought of Romans in sections, the first eight chapters deals with our relationship to God, Paul lays out for us what really what 00:00:20.300 --> 00:00:25.100 the gospel is and how our life is transformed in Jesus and the position it gives us in him. 00:00:25.120 --> 00:00:29.040 And it culminates in Chapter eight and describing our identity in Christ. 00:00:29.040 --> 00:00:31.330 And it's a beautiful work that Paul has put together. 00:00:31.440 --> 00:00:34.780 Some say it's the greatest work in antiquity that anyone could ever read. 00:00:34.860 --> 00:00:42.160 And then chapter nine 1011 is this unit that the Jewish people are asking the question, Well, what happens to us? 00:00:42.260 --> 00:00:45.110 And then 12 and on is the application of the gospel. 00:00:45.380 --> 00:00:48.750 And so in chapter 9 to 11 is where we are together today. 00:00:48.800 --> 00:00:51.140 And we're at the tail end of Chapter 11. 00:00:51.140 --> 00:00:54.680 Working through that, we're going to pick up in verse verse 11 of chapter 11 today. 00:00:55.180 --> 00:00:59.340 But Paul is answering the question really preemptively as he's writing this letter. 00:00:59.340 --> 00:01:03.490 He's assuming that the Jewish believers are going to have some question in their mind about Israel. 00:01:04.340 --> 00:01:06.190 Where does where do we fit in all of this? 00:01:06.200 --> 00:01:13.570 And if you think in terms of nine, ten, 11, as the past, present and future, Chapter nine being Israel in the past, the Chapter ten being Israel in the present, 00:01:13.820 --> 00:01:21.320 Chapter 11 being Israel in the future, Today that's what we're going to deal with is how the Lord wants to work through the people of Israel moving forward, and 00:01:21.320 --> 00:01:25.000 particularly knowing the Jewish people by and large have rejected the Lord. 00:01:25.800 --> 00:01:33.040 What is their future hold and what is God desire for them now that they've rejected or fallen before 00:01:33.040 --> 00:01:35.720 the Lord or fallen away from the Lord? 00:01:35.800 --> 00:01:39.980 What can we anticipate for their lives and where do they here? 00:01:45.080 --> 00:01:52.080 And, as we look at this from a particular people group, I think there's also plenty of application for us as well because, well, 00:01:52.320 --> 00:01:59.400 we mess up, too, and we fall on a regular basis or sometimes as it relates to this chapter, it's dealing with a 00:01:59.400 --> 00:02:00.480 people group. 00:02:00.480 --> 00:02:03.260 Sometimes a people group might move away from the Lord. 00:02:03.260 --> 00:02:05.360 And the question is, well, what about our people? 00:02:05.360 --> 00:02:08.380 Is God completely forsaken us or have we been abandoned? 00:02:08.380 --> 00:02:10.570 How do we even get back to where we were? 00:02:10.639 --> 00:02:17.080 How can we even move forward in that position we're in, whether on a on a on a personal spot or collectively? 00:02:17.660 --> 00:02:24.920 That's the question they're asking in this chapter today and so very applicable to our lives and thinking through 00:02:24.920 --> 00:02:27.900 how we might recover from falling. 00:02:29.240 --> 00:02:30.960 And what does that mean for us? 00:02:31.920 --> 00:02:39.040 And point number one is where we start to this morning to answer the first part of this question, how do we recover or how do we succeed after following 00:02:39.040 --> 00:02:42.300 point number one of your notes is this Understand God's heart. 00:02:43.820 --> 00:02:47.260 What is it about the Lord that we need to learn in order to be able to move forward? 00:02:47.360 --> 00:02:51.000 Because God's position will determine where our position can lie? 00:02:51.060 --> 00:02:53.340 Because if there's no hope in the Lord, then there's no hope for us. 00:02:53.340 --> 00:02:58.740 And so we need to know where God's heart is in all of this for us to be able to move forward in him. 00:02:58.780 --> 00:03:00.500 And so this is the question they ask. 00:03:00.600 --> 00:03:05.910 In the very beginning of verse 11, they say, So ask did they stumble in order that they might fall? 00:03:06.160 --> 00:03:13.320 And what Paul is actually applying here with Israel is not just simply falling as if they fall and can get up, but he's inferring forever. 00:03:14.020 --> 00:03:16.660 He's saying, I ask, did they stumble? 00:03:16.660 --> 00:03:18.110 Nor did they might fall forever. 00:03:19.160 --> 00:03:21.280 Meaning is that it for the Jewish people? shame and despair. 00:04:10.680 --> 00:04:14.180 And we don't really see the light at the end of the tunnel in that moment. 00:04:14.180 --> 00:04:19.760 We just we look inside of ourselves and feel that sense of darkness and like we let people down. 00:04:19.760 --> 00:04:23.480 And so they're asking this question here in the beginning, did they stumble and order that they fall? 00:04:23.840 --> 00:04:31.240 And Paul answers this question the same as he's answered all the questions he's had up to this point, these half a dozen questions Paul has asked in Romans nine, 00:04:31.240 --> 00:04:31.920 ten, 11. 00:04:31.920 --> 00:04:33.380 And Paul says, by no means. 00:04:34.720 --> 00:04:39.180 By no means, but rather to understand the heart of God than he gives us some answers in response to this. 00:04:39.240 --> 00:04:44.720 And really in this next section of this verse, he really gives us three responses to this. 00:04:44.740 --> 00:04:47.160 He says, rather through their trespass. 00:04:47.160 --> 00:04:52.940 That's part one salvation has come to the Jews part two so as to make Israel jealous. 00:04:54.040 --> 00:04:59.060 And so what God is doing here in the beginning, he's acknowledging that Israel has fallen. 00:04:59.060 --> 00:05:05.020 And I really appreciate this about this Lord, this place of transparency in talking about Israel, let's let's say where they're at, right? 00:05:05.020 --> 00:05:07.370 Let's just declare what it is through their trespass. 00:05:07.700 --> 00:05:09.300 Israel has certainly fallen. 00:05:09.540 --> 00:05:16.580 And with the Lord, we get that opportunity to be honest with him and where we are as human beings because of who 00:05:16.580 --> 00:05:17.840 he is in his nature. 00:05:18.040 --> 00:05:18.740 We are and the rejection of him and turning away from him, which really 00:05:33.080 --> 00:05:36.940 is a fairly wild statement when you consider it in the context of Scripture. 00:05:37.780 --> 00:05:42.940 And the reason is because the old New Testament is written by Jewish people, right? 00:05:42.940 --> 00:05:44.080 By and large, it's Jewish. 00:05:44.460 --> 00:05:47.200 People this morning were studying the Jewish faith. 00:05:47.220 --> 00:05:51.620 And we're learning from really the Jewish language as Hebrew. 00:05:51.640 --> 00:05:54.420 And then they spoke Greek into the time of Christ. 00:05:54.620 --> 00:05:57.070 And we're learning all about their culture and tradition. 00:05:57.300 --> 00:06:02.120 And yet, by and large, they've rejected the Messiah. 00:06:02.120 --> 00:06:09.200 But here we are today learning about the faith that they proclaimed that we have now owned as our faith because the 00:06:09.200 --> 00:06:14.360 Messiah has come to redeem and Gentiles have embraced this message. 00:06:15.840 --> 00:06:19.760 But God has opened about their failure and He acknowledges it. 00:06:20.660 --> 00:06:27.940 But then the next part of this verse he says to us as well, in this difficult moment, even though they've rejected it, God 00:06:27.940 --> 00:06:30.220 has moved it together for a greater good. 00:06:31.040 --> 00:06:37.040 That in our failures, it's important to remember that God is greater than our failures and God can redeem anything. 00:06:37.120 --> 00:06:43.280 Now, I'm not encouraging you to go out and purposely mess up in life to show how great God can make things. 00:06:43.420 --> 00:06:45.090 That's not honoring to the Lord. 00:06:45.260 --> 00:06:52.780 But God certainly within his ability and his sovereignty can take what man might intend for bad or wrong. 00:06:52.860 --> 00:06:55.420 And God can bring a greater story of redemption out of it. 00:06:55.480 --> 00:06:58.080 And that's what he's saying about the Gentiles in this passage of scripture. 00:06:58.760 --> 00:07:05.690 Salvation has now come to the Gentiles that through one people group, all people group have come to be blessed. 00:07:06.380 --> 00:07:12.590 And then he says this in the last part of this verse as to make Israel jealous. 00:07:13.980 --> 00:07:19.600 Now, in most contexts, jealousy is not a good thing, right? 00:07:19.600 --> 00:07:26.260 The idea of coveting or envy or jealousy, we tend to couple those words together. 00:07:26.360 --> 00:07:29.860 But jealousy typically is not a good thing. 00:07:29.860 --> 00:07:36.520 But here in this passage, the Lord intends the idea of jealousy, provoking them to jealousy, to be a good thing. 00:07:37.900 --> 00:07:43.380 Reality is, we often times as people, we category of stubbornness. 00:07:52.440 --> 00:08:00.080 I don't know if maybe favorite is the right word, but I was I was the head of the class out of all my siblings when it comes to when it came to stubbornness. 00:08:00.300 --> 00:08:00.960 Right. 00:08:01.260 --> 00:08:08.000 But it was for me, my education was making the stupid mistake and then learning from that. 00:08:08.000 --> jealousy, he's really putting his finger on where the problem is for them. 00:08:34.659 --> 00:08:41.799 Now, in most contexts, jealousy certainly is bad, but in a general sense, jealousy is when you as an obstacle to what you want to achieve or receive. 00:09:01.680 --> 00:09:08.080 And so in order to get there, you even get to the place in that jealousy that you will want to take that person 00:09:50.760 --> 00:09:54.600 If someone tries to step into their life and it's destructive. 00:09:55.360 --> 00:10:02.620 You could be jealous over that for their well-being, for their protection, with that gift, obviously is a responsibility comes along with that. 00:10:13.200 --> 00:10:18.690 And so there is this desire within you to be jealous over what God has given you to protect. relationship. 00:10:28.960 --> 00:10:36.260 And so the Lord is jealous towards us with a godly jealousy because we're designed to belong to him and in relationship to Israel, 00:10:36.260 --> 00:10:38.120 Israel's God's chosen people. 00:10:38.280 --> 00:10:42.820 And He wants Israel to be jealous of that relationship which they were created in Christ. 00:10:42.840 --> 00:10:44.660 It Listen to this. 00:11:36.660 --> 00:11:39.790 Paul says, I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. 00:11:40.420 --> 00:11:47.700 I promise you to one husband to Christ so that I may present you as a pure virgin in him. 00:11:48.940 --> 00:11:56.000 And so Paul's desire, godly desire, this jealousy is about helping people connect to the Lord and know him because they were 00:11:56.000 --> 00:12:00.260 one created by him and two, Jesus came to redeem them. 00:12:01.060 --> 00:12:02.340 They belong to him. 00:12:03.200 --> 00:12:09.400 You as a creature are created as a worship being the Because it's the heart of God that even in these moments, while Israel has rejected him, God continues to extend his hand to them and his desire is 00:13:10.600 --> 00:13:11.520 to bring them back in. we see God's heart here, but when we fall, it's also important to have a community to encourage you. 00:13:27.720 --> 00:13:29.960 And let me be a little bit clear here. 00:13:29.960 --> 00:13:36.340 When I say find godly friends, I don't mean people that just wear the label Christian and just say, I'm a Christian. 00:13:36.860 --> 00:13:43.860 I genuinely mean people that have a life giving relationship with Jesus people that when you think of, they 00:13:43.860 --> 00:13:45.010 walk with Christ. 00:13:45.420 --> 00:13:51.560 And so they want to not just wear the label of Christian, but they want to encourage you and speak truth into your life. 00:13:53.580 --> 00:13:57.820 And in this passage that that's the apostle Paul for the Jewish people. 00:13:57.820 --> 00:14:01.540 Everyone everyone needs someone like the Apostle Paul's heart towards the Jewish people. 00:14:01.540 --> 00:14:04.220 You need someone towards you in your life in that same way. 00:14:04.220 --> 00:14:08.100 And verse 13, it says, Now I'm speaking to you, Gentiles. 00:14:09.700 --> 00:14:15.840 Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry. 00:14:16.380 --> 00:14:17.880 I know the thought goes on from there. 00:14:17.880 --> 00:14:22.700 Actually, verse 14 is not the beginning of a new thought, but it's a continuation of verse 13. 00:14:22.820 --> 00:14:22.860 But. 00:14:23.200 --> 00:14:30.380 But I want to acknowledge here that the apostle Paul being a being a Jew rejected by his own people, he's still looking 00:14:30.380 --> 00:14:31.500 for God's moving. 00:14:32.340 --> 00:14:39.360 And Paul is saying, look, I just I just want to do what God has called me to in this world with the people that God has brought into 00:14:39.360 --> 00:14:40.060 his fold. 00:14:40.080 --> 00:14:42.800 Let's move forward in ministry and what God desires. 00:14:43.200 --> 00:14:45.120 And He's recognizing his position in the Lord. 00:14:45.120 --> 00:14:47.420 And all of us are given a position in God. 00:14:47.420 --> 00:14:49.100 And so Paul wants to move in that way. 00:14:49.260 --> 00:14:56.360 But then he adds on to that in verse 14, he says, In order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous and thus 00:14:56.360 --> 00:14:57.560 save some of them. 00:14:58.760 --> 00:15:01.360 So Paul is saying the same heart as the Lord is. 00:15:01.480 --> 00:15:07.030 He's not only wanting to do ministry and he's working among the Gentiles, but his heart continues to be for his own people. 00:15:07.320 --> 00:15:15.200 And he's moving forward with the desire that as he sees the success of the Gentiles in the gospel, 00:15:15.420 --> 00:15:17.680 his prayer and hope is that it would make his own people jealous. 00:15:18.220 --> 00:15:25.360 Again, in order to drive them back to the Lord, that they would remember what they had in 00:15:25.360 --> 00:15:28.740 their relationship with God and want to move to that. 00:15:28.800 --> 00:15:36.190 And for me, verse 14 is an incredible testimony to the life of the Apostle Paul when I talk about needing godly friends. 00:15:36.460 --> 00:15:39.420 Verse 14, is that example as to why that matters? 00:15:39.500 --> 00:15:46.620 Because when you think about the Apostle Paul's life, the apostle Paul had every excuse in the world to just be done 00:15:46.620 --> 00:15:47.260 with his own people. 00:15:48.980 --> 00:15:55.990 And when the apostle Paul went on his missionary journeys and he planted churches, he would always start in the synagogues as long as there was a synagogue. 00:15:56.360 --> 00:15:59.210 And in the cities that he would go to, he would start with his own people. 00:15:59.220 --> 00:16:02.480 Part of it, because there was at least a biblical foundation there. 00:16:02.480 --> 00:16:09.640 So it's easy to start with a gospel when you have a biblical foundation, but also because his heart was for his people and after they 00:16:09.640 --> 00:16:12.120 would reject him, he would then move on to other people. 00:16:12.120 --> 00:16:16.160 Some of them would embrace the message, but then he would move on to the other Gentiles over and over. 00:16:16.160 --> 00:16:16.780 Paul did this. 00:16:17.240 --> 00:16:20.560 Paul continuously went to prison because of his faith. 00:16:20.580 --> 00:16:21.870 Do you know how Paul was in prison? 00:16:23.280 --> the second comes from Jeremiah chapter 11, talking about this idea of a root. 00:20:22.500 --> 00:20:29.500 And these pictures are important because the demonstration of this really is a portrayal of a root is a demonstration of whether or not your heart is healthy. 00:20:37.480 --> 00:20:44.500 And what he means is this In Israel's day, they were an agricultural society when the harvest would first things they received from all of their hard work for the year and to give it to God. 00:20:58.160 --> 00:21:05.450 And it was a way of saying to the Lord, Look, God, our heart is aligned with you and we want to make sure that you get the first and the best of everything, 00:21:05.540 --> 00:21:11.640 not the scraps and the leftovers, but also it's saying to the Lord and God, we're going to Deuteronomy chapter ten, verse 18, he looks at Israel after they've been rescued out of slavery. 00:27:48.220 --> 00:27:55.300 And he and he says to them, Look, I want you to remember the widow and the orphan and the 00:27:55.300 --> 00:27:55.840 immigrant. 00:27:57.420 --> 00:28:00.580 Because those flights in life there, they're not easy. 00:28:01.700 --> 00:28:06.350 And when you don't have much in life, you need the help of others. 00:28:06.740 --> 00:28:09.660 And it's God saying to Israel, remember where you were before me? 00:28:09.720 --> 00:28:13.320 You were a group of slaves or a group of slaves. 00:28:13.460 --> 00:28:19.490 And when you honor what's broken, not only are you helping people in your in the need, but you're honoring God who made them in his image. 00:28:20.720 start looking down at other people. 00:29:27.540 --> 00:29:34.540 And so the apostle Paul is warning us here because he's seeing the pattern repeated over and over in 00:29:34.540 --> 00:29:35.220 the lives of people. 00:29:36.000 --> 00:29:43.180 In fact, when you get to the latter part of the Old Testament into the prophets, the major 00:29:43.180 --> 00:29:50.360 minor prophets of the Old Testament, the last 17 books, the prophets really didn't start speaking until the end of Israel's demise as 00:29:50.360 --> 00:29:52.320 they were carried into captivity. 00:29:52.460 --> 00:30:00.400 But the thing that God said to them over and over is that they started to oppress people, the widows, the orphans, the foreigners. 00:30:00.400 --> 00:30:02.070 They started to treat people poorly. 00:30:02.100 --> 00:30:04.220 The oppressed became the oppressor. 00:30:04.440 --> 00:30:11.460 And when you get to the New Testament, like in Mark chapter ten, Jesus says to his disciples, He's walking along with them, 00:30:11.700 --> 00:30:13.320 and James and John look at Jesus. 00:30:13.360 --> 00:30:18.120 And they're like, Jesus, when you get to your throne, let us reign on your right and on your left. 00:30:18.320 --> 00:30:21.640 And Jesus asks, Can you really bear what we're about to go through? 00:30:21.640 --> 00:30:23.900 And they're like, Oh yeah, Lord, we can definitely do that. 00:30:24.380 --> 00:30:27.140 And the disciples get mad that James and John asked that question. 00:30:27.640 --> 00:30:33.580 And Jesus says to him, It's not mine to give you, but He who wants to be great, great in my kingdom must become the least. 00:30:34.600 --> 00:30:39.260 I mean, the way Jesus's kingdom moves forward is not top down, but rather bottom up. 00:39:53.400 Rejoice. 00:39:54.400 --> 00:40:01.580 And one of the most incredible things for me about this chapter is when I when I consider where the apostle Paul was 00:40:01.580 --> 00:40:02.300 when he wrote this. 00:40:04.300 --> 00:40:05.280 Paul is in. 00:40:05.800 --> 00:40:06.320 He's in jail. 00:40:07.580 --> 00:40:09.280 He's been beaten and he's thrown in jail. 00:40:09.300 --> is going to be like, No, if I had to choose between prison and not prison, I'd choose not prison every time. 00:40:29.160 --> 00:40:36.300 But what Paul is saying is this idea of rejoicing is a almost 100 years. 00:42:38.760 --> 00:42:41.390 He was ahead of David Livingstone and in Africa. 00:42:42.020 --> 00:42:49.100 But George Schmidt went to South Africa and ministered to a people group down there that there was a Dutch colony that already existed 00:42:49.100 --> 00:42:51.540 there, but they were treated poorly by the Dutch colony. 00:42:51.700 --> 00:42:54.320 But George Schmidt went ahead and ministered to them anyway. 00:42:54.320 --> 00:42:56.640 He didn't care how the people were treating them. 00:42:56.760 --> 00:42:59.120 He desired for them to know the Lord.
