going to talk about living in God's abounding grace, which is a pretty general title for Christians. 00:00:10.220 --> 00:00:14.060 If we don't know anything about the grace of God as believers, Lord, help us, right? 00:00:14.080 --> 00:00:15.870 This is the anthem of what we are about. 00:00:16.200 --> 00:00:23.220 And so Paul is really sharing the heart of Christianity in Romans Chapter five today, living in God's abounding grace, which I know for some of 00:00:23.220 --> 00:00:25.760 us we might be very familiar with the idea of God's grace. 00:00:25.780 --> 00:00:32.920 And this might sound a little bit mundane, but it's important for us to remind us, like the idea of God's grace and how central it is 00:00:32.920 --> 00:00:33.860 to our life right now. 00:00:34.500 --> 00:00:41.520 You may be coming into church this morning just feeling broken and or hard hearted, and things just aren't working the way 00:00:41.520 --> 00:00:42.190 that you anticipated. 00:00:43.180 --> 00:00:49.380 And God's grace is a great reminder for what we need in our life to find ourselves renewed and refreshed in Jesus. 00:00:50.100 --> 00:00:55.800 And if you don't feel like you're really on the on the ledge of needing God's grace right now, you will get there, right? 00:00:55.820 --> 00:01:00.040 And so the idea of Romans Chapter five and truth be told, all of us need it all the time. 00:01:00.320 --> 00:01:00.580 But. 00:01:00.580 --> 00:01:07.620 Romans Chapter five is that passage that reminds us of the goodness of God's grace that Paul is going to reiterate over and over within this section that we're 00:01:07.620 --> 00:01:13.320 going to look at picking up in verse 12, and just a way of reminder of how we got to where we are in Romans. 00:01:13.880 --> 00:01:21.120 Romans one, two to verse 17 shares the anthem of what Romans is about, the anthem of Christianity, verse 16 and 17 00:01:21.120 --> 00:01:21.800 especially. 00:01:21.840 --> 00:01:29.140 Are those pinnacle passages of all of Romans, He says, for the righteousness of God is revealed to us for 00:01:29.140 --> 00:01:32.520 the for the just we're justified by faith in Christ. 00:01:33.280 --> 00:01:33.980 It says exactly. 00:01:34.240 --> 00:01:41.460 For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for those who believe the Jew first and also for the Gentile, for in it, the righteousness of God is revealed 00:01:41.460 --> 00:01:42.680 from faith to faith. 00:01:42.680 --> 00:01:44.020 The just shall live by faith. 00:01:44.780 --> 00:01:47.320 That's the theme of Romans. 00:01:47.400 --> 00:01:50.090 And then in verse 18, though, he then gives us that warning. 00:01:50.300 --> 00:01:57.300 Passage of the wrath of God is revealed against all ungodliness and he goes throughout Romans The first half of or the second half of chapter one all the way 00:01:57.300 --> 00:02:03.560 into chapter three telling us who exactly is under God's wrath, which is a great section of scripture to work through. 00:02:03.600 --> 00:02:03.780 Right? 00:02:03.820 --> 00:02:07.180 It's the table talk that you enjoy with other people. 00:02:07.180 --> 00:02:09.639 Let me tell you about God's wrath and how all of us are under it. 00:02:09.800 --> 00:02:11.570 That's the conclusion of Romans one, two and three. 00:02:11.940 --> 00:02:13.160 All of us are under God's wrath. 00:02:13.720 --> 00:02:19.660 But at the very end of chapter three, then he gives us this thought once again, He says, But the just shall live by faith. reading Paul's letter would say to Paul, okay, Paul, prove it. 00:02:29.160 --> 00:02:32.440 And in chapter four, he uses the example of Abraham. 00:02:33.420 --> 00:02:40.660 And if you remember, we looked at the life of Abraham through a couple of weeks, but he uses the example of Abraham because to the Jews there is no no greater Jew 00:02:40.660 --> 00:02:41.340 than Abraham. 00:02:41.360 --> 00:02:42.600 I mean, he's the Jew of the Jews. 00:02:42.600 --> 00:02:44.750 He's the one that started what we call Judaism. 00:02:45.320 --> 00:02:47.740 Abraham was the first one called out by God, right. 00:02:48.060 --> 00:02:49.030 And from a pagan place. 00:02:49.120 --> 00:02:51.520 And what we find about the life of Abraham is Abraham was a pagan. 00:02:52.540 --> 00:02:54.380 His name acknowledged paganism. 00:02:55.060 --> 00:02:58.960 And God pulled him out not because of Abraham being great, but because God was great. 00:02:59.060 --> 00:03:01.080 God demonstrated his faith towards Abraham. 00:03:02.580 --> 00:03:06.060 And now He reminds us in chapter five that you can be like Abraham, too. 00:03:06.760 --> 00:03:07.720 And it's not because you're great. 00:03:08.920 what it means to be in God's grace. 00:03:21.180 --> 00:03:28.380 And he's going to do it this morning by comparing us between the idea of Adam and what that means, being born from Adam, 00:03:28.740 --> 00:03:30.660 and then the idea of Jesus. 00:03:30.700 --> 00:03:35.640 And he talks about in the very beginning in verse 12, a theology that some people find uncomfortable. 00:03:36.900 --> 00:03:38.050 It's not a popular theology. 00:03:38.460 --> 00:03:43.720 When you start in Romans chapter five, verse 12, people don't pick these first few verses as their favorite verses in the Bible. spiritual condition. 00:05:18.820 --> 00:05:21.970 We have this way in life to kind of just look at things and say, you know what? 00:05:21.980 --> 00:05:25.740 As long as we're progressing towards getting better, that's all that really matters, right? 00:05:26.780 --> 00:05:29.390 But Paul wants us to understand in Romans chapter five. 00:05:31.240 --> 00:05:38.460 There's something happening 00:07:01.120 --> 00:07:02.300 The 12th District. 00:07:02.320 --> 00:07:02.910 You know how it goes. 00:07:03.080 --> 00:07:03.920 Just three fingers. 00:07:04.280 --> 00:07:11.120 But Katniss Everdeen was like this representative in The Hunger Games of all of her people in her district, and she went out and fought for them. 00:07:11.820 --> 00:07:13.880 She was that headship. 00:07:13.880 --> 00:07:17.660 And in fact, theologians refer to this as federal headship. 00:07:18.300 --> 00:07:22.440 Adam, is this federal headship one leader to represent a group? 00:07:23.040 --> 00:07:24.300 That's what Adam is for us. 00:07:24.320 --> 00:07:31.620 And if you don't follow the Katniss Everdeen representation, maybe like we could say just the president of a country, a leader of a country, when they sign a bill into law, 00:07:31.800 --> 00:07:35.650 the President would be acting on behalf of all of the people that he represents. 00:07:36.720 --> 00:07:40.100 And in light of that, Adam becomes our representative. 00:07:40.120 --> 00:07:45.820 And so when you read this verse, some people might ask the question, What does this mean because of Adam? 00:07:47.320 --> 00:07:49.800 We're born under the curse of sin and death. 00:07:51.060 --> 00:07:55.280 Or is it because of my sin that I am responsible for? 00:07:55.520 --> 00:07:57.160 And the answer to both of those is yes. are all true. 00:08:06.180 --> 00:08:07.960 And so there's accountability. 00:08:07.960 --> 00:08:09.900 But Adam is your representative. 00:08:09.900 --> 00:08:12.940 And because of Adam, you were born under the curse of sin and death. 00:08:13.260 --> 00:08:15.840 Now, when people look at that, they say, well, I object, right? 00:08:15.840 --> 00:08:17.780 Because I don't want that kind of I don't want that leader. 00:08:17.840 --> 00:08:18.600 I want a different leader. 00:08:18.960 --> 00:08:21.260 This is this is not a good leader to have. 00:08:21.260 --> 00:08:23.820 So let's let's of sin and death. 00:08:28.120 --> 00:08:29.360 So give me give me a different leader. 00:08:29.560 --> 00:08:35.460 Well, good news for you when you read the context of Romans chapter five verses 12 to 14. 00:08:35.460 --> 00:08:36.909 Paul starts with this thought. 00:08:37.220 --> 00:08:43.360 He leaves that thought for a minute in verse 15 to 17, and then he jumps back to this thought in verse 18 and 19. 00:08:43.360 --> 00:08:48.460 And so I'm going to skip ahead and read for those of you that are like, I want a different federal headship here. 00:08:48.660 --> 00:08:49.380 I want a different leader. 00:08:49.600 --> 00:08:56.000 Well, verse 18, it goes on and says, therefore, as one trespass led to the condemnation for all men. 00:08:57.520 --> 00:09:04.260 So one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 00:09:05.560 --> 00:09:08.120 For as by the one man's disobedience, the many were made sinners. 00:09:08.680 --> 00:09:12.710 So by the one man's disobedience, the many will be made righteous. 00:09:15.540 --> 00:09:18.290 What Paul is saying is if you want a different leader. 00:09:20.500 --> 00:09:23.480 The Bible gives you a different federal headship. 00:09:25.080 --> 00:09:27.400 And that one is Christ. 00:09:29.020 --> 00:09:34.160 So under the idea of Adam, we're not just we're not simply trying to get better. 00:09:34.160 --> 00:09:37.210 We're not life is not ultimately about just simply improving. 00:09:37.260 --> 00:09:39.170 What he's saying under Adam is we need a total transformation. 00:09:41.140 --> 00:09:44.940 We need something completely different because under the state of Adam, it's sin and death. 00:09:45.720 --> 00:09:47.820 It's not just trying to improve upon sin and death. 00:09:47.820 --> 00:09:49.080 00:09:58.640 And this new federal headship that he represents here, he talks about is Jesus. 00:09:59.560 --> 00:10:00.920 And the way that he talks about him is interesting. 00:10:01.220 --> 00:10:01.340 Here. 00:10:01.660 --> 00:10:05.280 He talks about in verse 19, for by the one man's disobedience, many remained sinners. 00:10:05.360 --> 00:10:09.010 So by the one man's obedience, the many were made righteous. 00:10:09.520 --> 00:10:13.980 He identifies this individual to represent you being Jesus as a man. 00:10:14.780 --> 00:10:16.230 Now let me just say this. 00:10:16.240 --> 00:10:23.560 This is very important theologically in our understanding of the significance of Christ in our life as to his identity and how his identity 00:10:23.560 --> 00:10:24.420 matters for us. 00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:32.320 Very clearly, he's calling him a man, meaning Jesus became 100% man in order to be a sufficient sacrifice for 00:10:32.320 --> 00:10:35.380 you to represent you, he would have to become what you are. 00:10:36.200 --> 00:10:38.060 And Jesus was 100% man. 00:10:38.900 --> 00:10:44.900 And at the same time, while Jesus was 100% man, he did not lose his identity as 100% God. 00:10:46.040 --> 00:10:48.180 Jesus didn't become less God. 00:10:48.620 --> 00:10:50.800 Jesus all of a sudden didn't become God. 00:10:50.800 --> 00:10:52.800 Jesus has always been God. 00:10:52.800 --> 00:10:59.920 And that becomes essential to because in order for Jesus to be a perfect sacrifice for 00:10:59.920 --> 00:11:02.680 you, he would have he would have to be perfect in and of himself. 00:11:03.020 --> 00:11:07.050 And this is what it says at the end of verse 19, the one man's obedience, the many were made righteous. 00:11:07.540 --> 00:11:09.690 It's not just simply enough that Jesus was a man. 00:11:09.860 --> 00:11:14.460 Jesus must also be God in order to be a sufficient sacrifice for you. 00:11:14.680 --> 00:11:15.440 Here's the reason why. 00:11:15.900 --> 00:11:23.320 When you read in Romans chapter three, verse ten, it tells us there is no one righteous and Romans 323 All of us have sinned. 00:11:23.640 --> 00:11:24.980 There is no perfect human being. 00:11:25.520 --> 00:11:32.540 Another human being cannot adequately cover what you have to pay to God because of your sin, because all 00:11:32.540 --> 00:11:33.520 of us have a sin debt. 00:11:33.520 --> 00:11:35.300 We're all negative before a holy God. 00:11:35.520 --> 00:11:38.560 We're all negative in debt and the wages of our sin is death. 00:11:39.360 --> 00:11:44.220 So someone that is in debt can't then come pay your debt because they have nothing to offer for that. 00:11:45.180 --> 00:11:52.400 What Jesus told us in Mark chapter ten, verse 18, he was approached by the rich young ruler and he was referred to as good and Jesus is response 00:11:52.400 --> 00:11:55.020 in Mark 1018 is no one is good but God. 00:11:56.240 --> 00:11:57.560 Every human being is a sinner. 00:11:58.400 --> 00:12:03.320 But Jesus was perfect, and the reason Jesus was perfect was because He was God. 00:12:04.720 --> 00:12:06.840 And in his account there is there is no negative. 00:12:08.420 --> 00:12:14.280 And there is enough in his account, more than enough in his account to pay for all of our sin debt. 00:12:15.380 --> 00:12:23.300 Jesus is both God and man, and it is essential for what Jesus has done for us by 00:12:23.300 --> 00:12:25.040 acknowledging our position. 00:12:25.040 --> 00:12:29.300 And Adam, we have opportunity then to look for another solution. 00:12:31.520 --> 00:12:38.200 Not to just simply improve on what's broken, but to find incredible transformation through another way. 00:12:39.920 --> 00:12:43.400 And Paul is bringing us to this place to represent humanity under two headships. 00:12:44.220 --> 00:12:44.660 These are the options. 00:12:46.120 --> 00:12:47.460 The federal headship of Adam. 00:12:48.720 --> 00:12:50.640 Are the federal headship of Christ. 00:12:51.840 --> 00:12:58.840 And the reason Paul is doing this is because in the Jewish mind and in the religious mind, they would come to this discussion 00:12:58.840 --> 00:13:00.290 with a third option. 00:13:00.440 --> 00:13:02.660 And Paul goes back and he talks about this in verse 13. 00:13:02.660 --> 00:13:06.080 He says, For sin indeed was in the world before the law was given. 00:13:07.000 --> 00:13:08.490 But sin is not counted where the law. 00:13:08.600 --> 00:13:15.780 There is no law yet death reign from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgressions of Adam, 00:13:16.060 --> 00:13:17.730 who was a type of the one who was to come. 00:13:18.240 --> 00:13:25.260 And what he's saying in verse 13 and 14, he's coming to these religious leaders and before these religious leaders, if they pose the question, how are you getting to 00:13:25.260 --> 00:13:25.460 heaven? 00:13:25.880 --> 00:13:27.380 What's your eternal hope in. 00:13:27.480 --> 00:13:32.120 And their response would not be Adam and their response would not be Jesus, but their response would be religion. 00:13:33.020 --> 00:13:40.100 I'm going to live these laws that God has given us and based on my performance of this law, God will then see that I'm worthy of his love and 00:13:40.100 --> 00:13:41.110 give me his grace. 00:13:42.620 --> 00:13:49.640 And Paul is saying to them, How can that even be possible when Moses was the one who received the law, 00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:50.820 what did people do? 00:13:50.840 --> 00:13:53.720 From the time of Adam and Moses, people were still dying. 00:13:54.860 --> 00:13:59.340 The wages of sin was still upon them, even before they had the law and before they had the law. 00:13:59.360 --> 00:14:00.980 What option did they have then? 00:14:00.980 --> 00:14:07.980 And in order to get them to think that there was something that existed before religious law and so therefore, before the Jewish Old Testament gave you a certain 00:14:07.980 --> 00:14:13.930 law to live by, what is it people had to live by in order to help them to think that there was something outside of their religious structure? 00:14:14.540 --> 00:14:17.160 There was something that people needed more than just law. 00:14:17.160 --> 00:14:23.780 And he's saying, look, the law certainly pointed to us how much we need to God, but how much we need the Lord. 00:14:23.780 --> 00:14:28.260 When you have the religious law, it identifies for you where you've gone wrong. 00:14:29.320 --> 00:14:33.700 But still people suffered under the wages of sin, which was death. 00:14:33.740 --> 00:14:38.400 And by the way, when we talk about death in this passage of scripture, we're not just simply talking about buried under the ground. 00:14:39.320 --> 00:14:45.620 What you'll find within verse 12 to verse 21, when it mentions the idea of death, it often contrasts it to the idea of life. 00:14:47.000 --> 00:14:52.020 And when it talks in terms of life, what it's talking about is eternal life, living forever in the presence of God. 00:14:52.960 --> 00:15:00.080 Juxtapose against this idea of death and death in this that communication is being separated from the relationship with God. 00:15:00.520 --> 00:15:05.860 Since Jesus himself is life and gives life when you're cut off from Jesus, what you with thoughts of 00:15:57.380 --> 00:15:59.560 refreshment in the hope that His Christ. 00:16:01.260 --> 00:16:02.880 Knowing we're not called to stay in. 00:16:03.060 --> 00:16:03.160 Adam. 00:16:04.700 --> 00:16:06.960 But to walk in the goodness of the Lord. 00:16:08.080 --> 00:16:10.080 And so he says, But the free gift. 00:16:11.580 --> 00:16:13.270 Is not like the trespass.
