00:00:53.830 But Second Corinthians Chapter 13 is where we are today. 00:00:54.220 --> 00:00:59.630 And just to dive into this as we get to the conclusion of this book, if you're just now joining us, you're at the grand finale. 00:00:59.920 --> 00:01:02.240 I don't know if that's good or bad for you, but welcome. 00:01:02.240 --> 00:01:04.019 We're glad you're in Second Corinthians. 00:01:04.019 --> 00:01:11.040 If you remember these last few chapters of this book, Paul's been specifically dealing with the false teachers that have corrupted and hurt the Church of 00:01:11.040 --> 00:01:11.590 Corinth. 00:01:12.280 --> 00:01:19.480 If you remember how this story began or this letter that Paul wrote began, he's writing to a church that has become adverse to 00:01:19.480 --> 00:01:19.780 him. 00:01:20.420 --> 00:01:26.550 And the reason it's become adverse to him is because these leaders have crept into the church and they've preached a different message, a different Jesus, a different gospel. 00:01:27.200 --> 00:01:31.320 They've maligned the Apostle Paul and poison the church's perspective of him. 00:01:31.560 --> 00:01:38.160 And Paul has continued to be kind towards them and continue to minister to towards them and refuses to give up on them. 00:01:38.240 --> 00:01:44.350 And finally, in the last few chapters of this book, he dealt with in the beginning his relationship to the church in the last few chapters. 00:01:44.400 --> 00:01:50.220 Now he turns to the false teachers and he specifically deals with these false teachers. 00:01:50.440 --> 00:01:55.480 And this is where we're engaging this story today and the encouragement you're going to find in second Corinthians 13. 00:01:55.620 --> 00:01:57.840 It carries the idea of a church being ready. 00:01:58.580 --> 00:02:01.320 Paul is giving them a warning to this point. 00:02:01.320 --> 00:02:05.500 He's gotten to the place where he's warning them, which makes this section a little heavier. 00:02:05.760 --> 00:02:12.960 He's got the place now where he's getting right to the crux of the problem that he's had with the church and the corruption 00:02:12.980 --> 00:02:14.300 that's taking place in there. 00:02:14.700 --> 00:02:15.620 And he's dealing with that. 00:02:15.640 --> 00:02:18.500 And he's writing this letter of warning to them. 00:02:18.560 --> 00:02:24.690 But he carries a certain attitude that he his desire is for the church to be ready, not just on an individual basis. 00:02:24.740 --> 00:02:27.960 If you've picked up the notes this morning, you see the title of today's notes, be ready. 00:02:28.360 --> 00:02:35.660 But he means it in the sense of corporately and not just ready for Paul's coming because Paul is going to visit the church, but 00:02:35.660 --> 00:02:39.140 ultimately he wants them ready for how they can live their lives in light of Christ. 00:02:40.220 --> 00:02:44.520 If their hearts are ready to receive the Apostle Paul, then their hearts are going to be ready to walk with Jesus. 00:02:44.940 --> 00:02:52.000 After all, remember, the Apostle Paul is an apostle, and to reject this apostle in the first century is 00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:55.200 to reject the mouthpiece of God and to reject Jesus himself. 00:02:55.220 --> 00:03:02.260 And so Paul continued to labor for this church, even though this church rejected them, because he knew how important his relationship to the church 00:03:02.260 --> 00:03:05.860 was, because it directly impacted their relationship with the Lord. 00:03:06.300 --> 00:03:08.960 And so Paul wanted them to be ready. 00:03:09.400 --> 00:03:14.200 And so what does it look like for a church to be ready for what God has called us to in this world? 00:03:14.200 --> 00:03:21.220 That's, I think, should be our heart's desire, that God is going to lead us on a path, on a journey as his people, to do 00:03:21.220 --> 00:03:28.280 certain things, to be a light for him in our valley, where God has us, in the relationships where God has placed us, God called you into 00:03:28.280 --> 00:03:29.550 this world to make a difference. 00:03:29.680 --> 00:03:29.940 Right? 00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:33.240 I mean, it goes all the way back to the Book of Genesis when God created us in his image. 00:03:33.260 --> 00:03:36.700 He said, Be fruitful, multiply and bless. 00:03:36.720 --> 00:03:43.900 And so God's desire for us was to advance the goodness of His glory in this world and the way that we demonstrated his image and how we lived 00:03:43.900 --> 00:03:45.740 life with those around us. 00:03:45.900 --> 00:03:48.220 And so that's been God's desire for us from the beginning. 00:03:48.280 --> 00:03:52.740 And so what does that look like for us as God's people to be mobilized for that purpose? gathered to gather, to gather today. 00:04:22.100 --> 00:04:24.140 We have a mission that God has called us on. 00:04:24.160 --> 00:04:28.460 There's an intention to God's church, intentionality to God's church. 00:04:28.480 --> 00:04:30.780 And we want to live for that in intentionality. 00:04:31.580 --> 00:04:34.680 And it's to be patient and persistent with others in order to accomplish that. 00:04:34.680 --> 00:04:41.220 And we see this second Corinthians chapter three, verse one, he says this is the third time I am coming to you. 00:04:42.680 --> 00:04:46.640 Every charge must be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 00:04:46.640 --> 00:04:48.560 Let me let me deal with this first verse, Paul. 00:04:48.660 --> 00:04:49.460 Paul is saying this. 00:04:49.860 --> 00:04:51.480 This is the third time I'm coming to you. 00:04:51.540 --> 00:04:56.020 So we're seeing in the Apostle Paul the consistency of not giving up on these people. 00:04:57.080 --> 00:04:57.900 They have rejected him. 00:04:58.200 --> 00:05:00.740 They have maligned him, they have attacked him. 00:05:01.460 --> 00:05:05.410 And Paul has continued to be patient and loving and gracious. 00:05:06.040 --> 00:05:09.940 And that's so important in the life of the believers to be patient with persistence. 00:05:09.960 --> 00:05:14.210 And when we talk about persistence, I don't mean to be pushy because we're not each other's Holy Spirit. 00:05:14.340 --> 00:05:15.800 There's one Holy Spirit. 00:05:16.020 --> 00:05:18.570 He's great at his job, and we should let him do that. 00:05:19.140 --> 00:05:25.880 But we want to care about each other enough to continue to encourage one another to what God has called us to do collectively. 00:05:27.280 --> 00:05:31.500 And I say from time to time as a church mission drifts and vision fades. 00:05:32.160 --> 00:05:36.660 After a while, you just kind of get used to the way things are and you lose sight of what God has called you to do. 00:05:38.160 --> 00:05:44.200 But Paul wants to keep his eyes on the purpose for what God has created his church to accomplish. 00:05:44.960 --> 00:05:47.730 And to do that, he is patient and persistent. 00:05:48.160 --> 00:05:55.520 This is the third time, Paul says, that he's coming to them, patiently meeting with the church wherever 00:05:55.520 --> 00:05:59.810 they are, and helping them take their next step with the Lord. 00:06:00.560 --> 00:06:01.380 And patience. 00:06:02.080 --> 00:06:05.770 Patience is a good indicator of where your trust lies. 00:06:06.880 --> 00:06:14.320 Patience with persistence is a little bit difficult because it's a reminder of, okay, here's the goal, here's where we are, and we want to gently 00:06:14.320 --> 00:06:20.380 be encouraging towards one another to progress in our and our growth in Jesus. 00:06:20.760 --> 00:06:28.040 It's often said that direction determines destination and on all of us are in different places in our relationship with the Lord and 00:06:28.040 --> 00:06:34.800 where someone might be, having walked with Jesus for 20 years, might look a little different with a new believer in Christ. 00:06:34.860 --> 00:06:42.040 And we shouldn't put the same expectations on a brand new believer in Jesus as someone that's been walking with Jesus for several decades, 00:06:42.800 --> 00:06:46.580 it's meeting us where we are and helping us take our next step in Christ. 00:06:46.660 --> 00:06:53.900 And this is where Paul has been in this just patient, not pushy, but persistent and wanting to see them continue to grow in 00:06:53.900 --> 00:06:54.680 the Lord. 00:06:54.680 --> 00:06:57.000 And so Paul has not given up on them. 00:06:57.000 --> 00:07:04.120 And patience is that good indicator of where your trust lies and not seeing it as your job to be someone else's savior. 00:07:05.340 --> 00:07:12.460 And your job to be their Holy Spirit's and continue to guilt them and and not us. 00:07:34.580 --> 00:07:41.720 And then he goes on and he says this In the next part of verse one, every charge must be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses, which 00:07:41.720 --> 00:07:44.760 is kind of a bizarre statement Paul just randomly makes here. 00:07:44.780 --> 00:07:44.840 Why? 00:07:45.140 --> 00:07:47.800 Why would Paul why would Paul say such a thing? 00:07:47.840 --> 00:07:51.670 Everything must be established on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:53.340 Well, Paul's making this for a few reasons. 00:07:53.380 --> 00:07:54.500 One, it's biblical. 00:07:55.240 --> 00:07:55.900 It's biblical. 00:07:55.900 --> 00:08:03.040 This idea of having witnesses dates back to Deuteronomy, chapter 19, verse 15, and it's repeated again and 00:08:03.040 --> 00:08:08.060 the Gospels and Matthew, chapter 18 versus 15 to 18. 00:08:08.260 --> 00:08:15.360 If you're ever dealing with someone that's adverse to Jesus, someone in the church that's creating conflict with what the identity of the church is 00:08:15.360 --> 00:08:22.540 about, and they're maliciously doing that that's laid out in these passages on how to approach someone that says, first, 00:08:22.540 --> 00:08:29.540 go to them in Matthew 18, it says, go to them personally because the interest is in the concern for their soul and the toxicity coming 00:08:29.540 --> 00:08:31.600 out of it and just talk to them. 00:08:32.559 --> 00:08:32.679 Right? 00:08:32.679 --> 00:08:35.140 And if they don't listen to that, bring someone else along. 00:08:35.880 --> 00:08:37.289 It's good accountability. 00:08:37.419 --> 00:08:37.520 Right. 00:08:37.559 --> 00:08:40.500 And Paul knows that because this church has been attacking him. 00:08:40.520 --> 00:08:43.880 And so he doesn't want to just be hidden in some corner and dealing with him anymore. 00:08:43.880 --> 00:08:45.000 He's trying to work with that. 00:08:45.200 --> 00:08:52.340 So now he's going to bring some other godly people around for the purpose of helping them understand where they've gone off course and encouraging them on that path. 00:08:52.580 --> 00:08:56.600 And the goal of this the goal of this is not to beat someone down. 00:08:56.600 --> 00:08:57.420 The goal of this is not to malign someone. 00:08:59.120 --> 00:09:01.510 The goal of this is to see people --> 00:09:14.410 And the purpose in this, the ultimate purpose in this, is dealing with the word discipline. 00:09:16.220 --> 00:09:22.520 Now, when we say discipline, I know many of us can get heart palpitations or something like that. 00:09:22.680 --> 00:09:23.020 Right. 00:09:23.140 --> 00:09:28.860 You can talk about the church and you use the word discipline and well, there's never been a part of my life that I have liked that word. 00:09:28.900 --> 00:09:32.220 That is not a that is not a fun word to have a discussion of. 00:09:32.260 --> 00:09:36.900 And I would say this is why I were to the point where Paul is saying, look, I've come now three times. 00:09:37.100 --> 00:09:38.420 I've written several letters. 00:09:38.420 --> 00:09:40.580 Paul's written four letters to the Church of Corinth. 00:09:40.720 --> 00:09:43.040 He's been persistent and patient with them. 00:09:43.100 --> 00:09:48.420 But none of this has helped remove the false teachers from the church that are doing harm to the church. 00:09:49.000 --> 00:09:52.740 And Paul knows that he's finally gotten to a place where he's like, look, we've got we've got to deal with this. 00:09:52.780 --> 00:09:57.380 And so we're going to bring some witnesses here and not for the purpose of beating people down. 00:09:59.400 --> 00:10:01.670 But helping us understand who we're called to be in Jesus. 00:10:02.200 --> 00:10:09.380 And when people use the word discipline, I know we want to oftentimes run from that, because one of two reasons I've seen 00:10:09.380 --> 00:10:16.740 in churches this has happened among people is one, churches have used a passage like this for bully moving. 00:10:17.340 --> 00:10:19.690 They want to they want to guilt people. 00:10:19.860 --> 00:10:21.960 They want to manipulate people. 00:10:21.960 --> 00:10:22.920 They want to shame people. 00:10:23.880 --> 00:10:27.560 And so the word discipline has been morphed into something different than what God intended. 00:10:28.440 --> 00:10:31.880 And that is that is toxic, that is not helpful, that is not healthy. 00:10:33.020 --> 00:10:40.500 And the other the other swing of the pendulum, like the other extreme that you'll see people take with this is to do nothing at all, 00:10:40.680 --> 00:10:41.380 become a coward. 00:10:43.700 --> 00:10:48.460 And let let the church stand really for absolutely nothing because they're afraid to stand for anything. 00:10:50.660 --> 00:10:56.440 And discipline is understood in a healthy way as that place of saying, look, God, God wants to do a work in me. training or any type of training before the season would start. 00:11:24.260 --> 00:11:30.510 I remember I would go train early because I didn't want to be the guy that showed up to practice and ended up puking because. 00:11:30.960 --> 00:11:33.880 Because, if you've ever played football, you know what that's like. 00:11:34.100 --> 00:11:41.320 You show up and then there's someone that didn't do their there strength training, endurance, endurance, preparation, and they get there and they just 00:11:41.320 --> 00:11:44.800 hold on to the trashcan the entire couple of weeks while they're preparing for football. 00:11:45.440 --> 00:11:48.060 And discipline in that moment does not feel good. 00:11:49.420 --> 00:11:55.720 But when you get to the game and your team was trained well, your team becomes successful. 00:11:56.600 --> 00:11:59.020 And the joy of winning is fun, right? 00:11:59.840 --> 00:12:07.020 And Hebrews Chapter 12, that's what it's saying is, look, God, God wants to be preparing you a warrior to accomplish great things in this world, 00:12:07.160 --> 00:12:10.500 not to not to war against people, not to not to destroy people. 00:12:10.520 --> 00:12:16.080 The Bible tells us we battle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and power spiritually, internally. 00:12:16.080 --> 00:12:19.860 God wants you strong in your identity in Him because God wants to do great things in your life. 00:12:20.160 --> 00:12:21.890 And that doesn't just magically happen. 00:12:22.960 --> 00:12:25.800 Or you don't just wake up tomorrow morning and you're Chapter 12, it says this For our earthly fathers discipline us for a few years doing the best. 00:12:37.640 --> 00:12:38.750 They knew how to love that. 00:12:38.840 --> 00:12:39.120 Right? 00:12:39.320 --> 00:12:46.740 Because sometimes when you think about discipline and you hear that connected to God, it's like Paul saying, look, when you've experienced discipline, let's be honest, 00:12:46.740 --> 00:12:48.260 your parents weren't always great at it, right? 00:12:48.640 --> 00:12:49.260 They tried. 00:12:49.620 --> 00:12:50.260 They tried. 00:12:50.580 --> 00:12:55.200 And he's saying that in verse ten, the earthly fathers doing the best they knew how. 00:12:55.460 --> 00:12:59.800 But God's discipline is always good for us so that we might share in His Holiness. 00:13:00.520 --> 00:13:03.600 No, discipline is enjoyable while it is happening, it's painful. 00:13:04.540 --> 00:13:11.660 But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this 00:13:11.660 --> 00:13:12.700 way. 00:13:14.640 --> 00:13:16.980 Godly discipline is not a tool to destroy you. 00:13:18.140 --> 00:13:22.540 So sometimes when we use the word discipline, we attach it to the word punishment. 00:13:22.600 --> 00:13:25.570 And that's not that's not a biblical picture of discipline. 00:13:26.180 --> 00:13:28.540 Punishment is intended to push you down. 00:13:29.660 --> 00:13:30.940 But discipline has a goal in mind. 00:13:32.240 --> 00:13:37.060 That's why when you study scripture, the word the word discipline is directly connected to the word disciple. 00:13:38.460 --> 00:13:45.550 A disciple is one who exercises certain disciplines in their life, that their life could be conformed better to the image of Christ. 00:13:45.660 --> 00:13:48.780 They understand who Jesus is and they want to grow in that. 00:13:48.780 --> 00:13:55.860 And so they exercise certain practices in their life to better connect with God and to learn 00:14:18.160 --> 00:14:21.180 Paul's not doing this in the story because he hates the church. 00:14:22.640 --> 00:14:29.860 But he's demonstrated by his patient persistence that his desire is love for latter half of Chapter 11, all the things that Paul describes for us that he did for the sake of the body. 00:14:52.140 --> 00:14:58.680 In fact, in verse two of Chapter 11, it says this I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy, for I betrothed you to one husband. 00:14:58.940 --> 00:15:03.030 So that to Christ, I might present you a pure virgin. 00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:07.180 So here's the question for you. 00:15:09.500 --> 00:15:10.680 Where is God challenging you? 00:15:14.540 --> 00:15:20.080 Where are you not taking the next step that God has called you on in your journey with Him? they disguise themselves in verse 14 as messengers of an angel of light. 00:17:00.600 --> 00:17:02.200 But the angel of light is really Satan. 00:17:02.280 --> 00:17:06.260 And they're teaching a 00:21:39.640 --> 00:21:46.660 Paul is saying to us that this weakness is not to be mistakes, but rather we find 00:21:46.660 --> 00:21:54.060 a reverence for the truth of who God is, because we have 00:28:47.290 And they expressed the faith that people like Clement of Rome or Ignatius or Irenaeus 00:28:47.290 --> 00:28:53.290 or Polycarp or Tertullian or Papias, I mean, it just goes on and on. point, or, facts about Jesus, right? 00:34:03.870 --> 00:34:05.450 Or you know the truth about Jesus even. 00:34:06.850 --> 00:34:10.290 Then you've passed the test of being in the faith. 00:34:11.389 --> 00:34:13.810 But let me just remind you of a few things. 00:34:14.610 --> 00:34:18.900 And this is maybe a little bit scary for a minute, but I want to talk about demons. 00:34:20.429 -->
