the truth in the life. 00:00:37.800 --> 00:00:45.100 And so this message, this last topic that we're going in together, we're you may be wondering if we're talking about Jesus, why are we not continuing in 00:00:45.100 --> 00:00:45.590 the Gospels? 00:00:46.540 --> 00:00:53.560 Well, it really has to do with the message that Christ shared with us that we have now been called as a church to for us, served us though he was a king and rules and reigns, and he 00:01:07.860 --> 00:01:11.380 has called us to represent his kingdom in this world. 00:01:11.780 --> 00:01:19.020 And so when you turn to the book of acts, it's going to give us a little bit of backdrop to First Peter as 00:01:19.060 --> 00:01:20.160 we get ready to dive into that. 00:01:20.160 --> 00:01:20.880 So let me set up. 00:01:20.980 --> 00:01:22.630 You're going to have to get there for me. 00:01:23.120 --> 00:01:27.280 Set up a little foundational backdrop as you find your place in First Peter chapter one. been resurrected, he's about to ascend into heaven. 00:01:41.920 --> 00:01:45.420 And it tells, that tells us that the group of disciples are gathered together, and it says this. 00:01:45.420 --> 00:01:50.120 And they gathered around him and asked him, Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel? 00:01:50.120 --> 00:01:57.160 He said to them, it is not for you to know the times or dates the father has set by his own authority, but you will receive power when the 00:01:57.160 --> 00:02:00.350 Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem. 00:02:00.520 --> 00:02:03.440 In all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. 00:02:05.060 --> 00:02:10.080 Jesus is outlining for us his calling upon his church in which he has built. 00:02:10.139 --> 00:02:17.200 There is a redemption story that now we are all a part of, and declaring to this world what Christ has done for 00:02:17.200 --> 00:02:17.500 us. 00:02:18.460 --> 00:02:25.740 In fact, in a in the very basic sense, the word apostle, which Jesus called the 12 and the 70, it really means 00:02:25.740 --> 00:02:32.810 in its root terms one sent forth if we're just to maybe correlate that to an expression that we use today, it would be maybe the terms missionary, 00:02:33.240 --> 00:02:35.980 someone that you send forth in the proclamation of the gospel. 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:43.060 But the reality is, based on this passage, God calls all of us to proclaim the good news in which he shared the word 00:02:43.460 --> 00:02:46.040 gospel is a message of proclamation. 00:02:46.780 --> 00:02:47.950 It's something that we declare. 00:02:48.100 --> 00:02:49.880 It literally means good news. 00:02:50.300 --> 00:02:59.000 And so the idea of God calling the apostles to go forth in this world, to share this good news, if you if you picture him for just a moment as a king, when 00:02:59.000 --> 00:03:06.360 a king would go into battle, if a if a king was victorious, the first thing that would happen, or if he wasn't victorious, he would send someone 00:03:06.360 --> 00:03:10.840 out ahead of the army to go back to the cities to declare the victory. 00:03:12.600 --> 00:03:19.880 And Jesus, being king, called his apostles to go forth throughout the world into the cities among the people, to declare 00:03:19.880 --> 00:03:21.520 the victory of the King. 00:03:21.600 --> 00:03:23.910 It is a proclamation of good news. 00:03:24.840 --> 00:03:29.660 It's the reason for which the church has the opportunity to rejoice and all that God has done for us. 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:32.840 We turn to the Book of First Peter. 00:03:33.160 --> 00:03:40.260 It's important for us to see how this message, this context, when God calls his people to share His Word, 00:03:40.320 --> 00:03:42.590 just plays out throughout the rest of Scripture. 00:03:42.840 --> 00:03:50.140 And first, Peter is a is a beautiful book that really defines for us the essentials of living for Christ because of God's redemption 00:03:50.260 --> 00:03:53.690 story on our behalf, how we become a part of it. 00:03:54.320 --> 00:04:01.480 The reason I love the Book of First Peter is because Peter is writing his book to believers who are enduring significant 00:04:01.480 --> 00:04:06.450 hardship because of their faith in Christ, even in that adversity. 00:04:06.900 --> 00:04:08.760 Peter's encouragement to them. 00:04:10.780 --> 00:04:12.930 Is to live for their king and kingdom. 00:04:14.720 --> 00:04:18.260 This message of redemption we refer to as the gospel. 00:04:19.860 --> 00:04:21.779 Is sacred. 00:04:22.700 --> 00:04:26.140 I want to start in verse ten for just a moment. 00:04:26.140 --> 00:04:29.100 We're going to look at verse ten to verse 12 and this section of Scripture. 00:04:29.280 --> 00:04:34.200 I want to kind of give an idea of how this portion lays in the chapter for just a moment. 00:04:34.200 --> 00:04:39.900 So as you're as you're looking at it, verse ten to verse 12 is sort of an interruption statement. 00:04:41.320 --> 00:04:45.840 So verses 3 to 7, Peter gives his explanation of living for the gospel and why we should live for the gospel. 00:04:46.220 --> 00:04:53.800 He goes on from verse 13 and does it again, but in verse ten to 12 he kind of gives this interruption statement, and he's almost kind of presupposing 00:04:53.800 --> 00:05:01.040 in his mind, as he's writing this letter to the church, that they're asking these questions within their mind, these thoughts that they're wrestling 00:05:01.040 --> 00:05:02.980 with over the significance of the gospel. 00:05:03.200 --> 00:05:04.600 And he interrupts his story. 00:05:04.700 --> 00:05:11.800 And I think good speakers have the tendency to do that, to anticipate what someone's questions may be, to interrupt that thought, to answer those 00:05:11.800 --> 00:05:15.260 questions, to relate it back to the text of why it's important for our lives. 00:05:15.440 --> 00:05:21.800 And so when Peter writes in First Peter chapter one and verse ten. 00:05:23.880 --> 00:05:31.300 It says as to the salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that you would come, that would come to you, made careful 00:05:31.300 --> 00:05:38.300 searches and inquiries, seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was, indicating, as he 00:05:38.300 --> 00:05:41.320 predicted, the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. 00:05:42.460 --> 00:05:49.700 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you and these things which now have been announced to you through 00:05:49.700 --> 00:05:58.370 those who preach the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit, sent from heaven things into which angels long to look. 00:05:58.540 --> 00:06:05.820 Now Peter starts his message as he as he's laying out for the church the significance of living for Christ in light of what Jesus has done for us. 00:06:06.240 --> from the beginning of Genesis three, people have been proclaiming this message of Christ. 00:06:19.800 --> 00:06:26.840 And in the Old Testament, when you think of the prophet prophets that have given of this moment, this gospel is so precious. 00:07:27.020 --> 00:07:34.280 There's redemption that God has brought is so important, so much so that when you even when you read the book of Galatians, passage by the name of, of Tim Keller was 00:13:01.860 --> 00:13:08.940 talking about, how we might view this passage of Scripture when it relates to the gospel, because sometimes we hear the word gospel 00:13:09.640 --> 00:13:13.420 and we have an incorrect understanding of what it means. 00:13:14.700 --> 00:13:21.100 And he says, he literally said about this section of Scripture, he says the angels aren't longing to look into this because they're idiots, right? 00:13:22.320 --> 00:13:29.340 I mean, if you just look at the gospel as this story of information, the angels aren't looking at 00:13:29.340 --> 00:13:31.130 this gospel and saying, you know what? 00:13:31.620 --> 00:13:32.290 That's a great story. 00:13:32.400 --> 00:13:34.240 And walking away and be like, oh, I forgot. much more to the gospel than just a story or an event. 00:13:49.140 --> 00:13:51.460 It is for certain an event. 00:13:52.640 --> 00:13:55.520 But maybe you've even had a child, in church. 00:13:55.600 --> 00:14:02.040 Or maybe you've been like this in church at some point in your life where they're going to go to class and they know what the story is and they're like, I know it. 00:14:16.220 But what he's identifying for us in these angels, through Peter, is to recognize in our lives that the gospel, it is an event. 00:14:16.940 --> 00:14:20.840 But that event transforms not not just us. 00:14:20.880 --> 00:14:27.900 In a moment of saying, you get this ticket out of out of hell free card, but it transforms the identity of who you are as a 00:14:27.900 --> 00:14:28.200 00:15:23.000 --> 00:15:26.320 In Second Corinthians chapter five and verse 17 is quoted right at the bottom. 00:15:27.640 --> 00:15:29.480 In Christ you are a new creation. 00:15:31.760 --> respond the way the gospel shares about our lives. 00:16:22.960 --> 00:16:30.260 But this is what he says in chapter one and verse three, blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who by the power 00:16:37.460 --> 00:16:41.200 of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last times. 00:16:42.440 --> 00:16:49.600 And this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, 00:16:49.660 --> 00:16:56.940 so that the proof of your faith being more precious than gold, which is perishable even though How does it tell us to respond to this message? 00:17:06.540 --> 00:17:12.060 In verse six it says that we greatly rejoice in what God has done. 00:17:14.359 --> 00:17:15.849 Why do we not respond 00:17:34.580 I'm going to share just an idea from my life as I've wrestled with this tax, knowing some points in my life, I'm not rejoicing other points 00:17:34.580 --> 00:17:36.160 in my life, I delight in it. 00:17:36.160 --> 00:17:36.280 Why? 00:17:36.560 --> 00:17:38.850 Why is it I, I, I'm not rejoicing. 00:17:39.000 --> 00:17:43.790 I'm going to tell you can disagree with this because this is just a viewpoint from this passage. 00:17:43.940 --> 00:17:49.680 But in my own heart, knowing what God's called me to do and looking at these angels and prophets, rejoicing in this, why? 00:17:49.940 --> 00:17:52.320 Why is it sometimes we struggle to rejoice? 00:17:53.940 --> 00:18:01.740 I think sometimes we have a hard time relating to a verse like this, because in our Christian bubble, 00:18:01.740 --> 00:18:08.040 we don't take opportunity to step out of our comfort comfort zone and to begin to appreciate what God has done. 00:18:09.540 --> 00:18:16.880 I think in this passage that we can intellectually agree to ourselves that what this verse says is true. 00:18:18.900 --> 00:18:23.120 But sometimes within my heart, or maybe our hearts were not rejoicing.
