as the tribes of Judah, or talked about as Judah, representing the two of two 00:02:15.300 --> 00:02:22.360 tribes, that those tribes continue to have a reign of godless kings and godly kings 00:03:18.460 --> 00:03:19.360 Darius. 00:03:19.360 --> 00:03:26.600 And then in chapter six and seven, there's this break in the timeline, and the story of Esther fits in the Book of Ezra between 00:05:06.320 --> 00:05:10.440 Kings during this time were considered gods, and women were often degraded. 00:05:11.800 --> 00:05:19.260 During this Persian Empire, kings were thought to need to have many wives and many children to display the greatness of 00:05:19.520 --> 00:05:19.980 their kingdom. 00:05:21.300 --> 00:05:28.300 Darius has just passed the kingdom on to Xerxes, and the tendency was in this Persian Empire that 00:05:28.300 --> 00:05:35.740 as the king had many wives and many children, that the king wasn't to be bothered with his children until the children became at 00:05:35.780 --> 00:05:37.320 least to the age of five. 00:05:37.760 --> 00:05:44.920 So it's likely that Xerxes was never around Darius until he was five years old, and the Persian Empire, 00:05:45.400 --> 00:05:52.660 for which Xerxes ruled, took over the entire known world from Greece to India, from 00:05:52.660 --> 00:05:58.160 Pakistan to Sudan and Egypt, Persia dominated the world. to display her beauty to the people and nobles, for she was lovely to look at. 00:08:58.260 --> 00:09:06.270 But when the attendants delivered the king's command, Queen Vashti refused to come, and the --> 00:11:08.760 and sometimes when we read within Scripture, we, I think we come to it with this expectation that what God needs to use is good people 00:11:08.760 --> 00:11:11.800 and gifted people and charismatic people. 00:11:12.520 --> 00:11:15.560 But what you find when you read the Bible is that not really God. 00:11:15.680 --> 00:11:19.420 God really just uses people, messy, gifted or not. --> 00:11:32.070 But for sure, when God uses people, none of those people are perfect people. 00:11:33.320 --> 00:11:40.580 But when I when I tell you that I've wrestled with the Book of Esther in my own personal life and the way that God has used it, I found 00:11:40.580 --> 00:11:41.700 out that so did church history. 00:11:43.080 --> 00:11:46.320 The Jewish people loved the Book of Esther because it created a holiday for them. 00:11:46.920 --> 00:11:51.080 But church history basically ignored Esther for the first seven centuries. 00:11:51.120 --> 00:11:58.220 In fact, when you go back and look over the first seven centuries of church history, there's commentaries all over, about the Bible, but 00:11:58.220 --> 00:12:02.020 there is no commentary on the book of Esther for the first seven centuries. 00:12:03.440 --> 00:12:09.920 When you read about the reformers, men like John Calvin and Martin Luther never really had anything positive to say. 00:12:09.960 --> 00:12:12.330 In fact, John Calvin never taught about this book. 00:12:12.440 --> 00:12:18.410 And Luther to say that he strongly disliked this book would be an underestimation. 00:12:20.500 --> 00:12:24.640 And the reason is this the book of Esther never talks about God. 00:12:25.660 --> 00:12:32.700 It never talks about a spiritual life or internal reason related to God as to why God allows these events to 00:12:32.800 --> 00:12:33.280 take place. 00:12:34.340 --> 00:12:41.360 And so when you come to a church on Sunday morning and you begin to preach from the book of Esther looking for how God works into that, it's a difficult text to 00:12:41.360 --> 00:12:41.660 look at. 00:12:42.880 --> 00:12:50.300 And when you read about the life of Esther, you discover that Esther's upbringing wasn't the best. 00:12:50.540 --> 00:12:52.620 She was raised by a relative named Mordecai. 00:12:54.160 --> 00:12:57.920 And Esther's life is the opposite of Daniel, who we examined last week. 00:12:57.920 --> 00:13:05.040 Daniel, as a young boy taken into captivity, determined from the very beginning he's going to live a life in honor of God, regardless of 00:13:05.040 --> 00:13:05.970 the consequences. 00:13:06.200 --> 00:13:12.280 And Esther decides she's going to live a life in honor of whatever she feels like, regardless of what God has to say. 00:13:14.580 --> 00:13:22.260 If you read her story and you try to examine why God would use her, you continue to look at the fact that it's 00:13:22.280 --> 00:13:24.340 for no other reason than by the grace of God. 00:13:25.680 --> 00:13:31.240 When the story tells us Ezra breaks dietary laws, Ezra sleeps with someone who's not her husband. 00:13:31.240 --> 00:13:33.420 Ezra marries someone who isn't a believer. 00:13:33.580 --> 00:13:40.780 Ezra hides her faith from other people, and she doesn't take a biblical stand until she's pressured into it by her relatives. 00:13:41.900 --> 00:13:49.300 As far as following God goes, Ezra's life in the beginning of the Book of Esther gives no indication that she desires 00:13:49.300 --> 00:13:53.720 to know God and grow closer to him. 00:13:53.860 --> 00:13:56.720 Esther's story doesn't fit with begin to learn in the story of Esther about this man named Haman. 00:16:16.060 --> 00:16:18.040 And this is where pride comes into battle. 00:16:18.080 --> 00:16:19.020 It says this about Haman. 00:16:19.480 --> 00:16:26.120 All the royal officials at the king's gates knelt down and paid honor to Haman, for the king had commanded this concerning him. 00:16:26.180 --> 00:16:29.840 But Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him honor. 00:16:29.920 --> 00:16:31.840 Mordecai was Esther's relative. 00:16:31.900 --> 00:16:32.620 Some believe he was. 00:16:32.920 --> 00:16:36.840 He was Esther's cousin, and Mordecai raised Esther. 00:16:36.860 --> 00:16:41.140 And so when Mordecai sees Haman, he refuses to bow down to him. 00:16:42.700 --> 00:16:49.820 There are people in this world that we 00:28:18.740 Humbling yourself before Christ and the sacrifice that he has brought you, brings you life in him. 00:28:19.060 --> 00:28:21.380 But do you know that salvation brings us life? 00:28:49.640 --> 00:28:57.830 If you desire for godliness to be made known in those moments, Haman and Xerxes humble yourself before him. 00:28:58.180 --> 00:28:59.300 Esther. 00:28:59.500 --> 00:29:03.870 Humble yourself before him, that he may exalt you in due time. 00:29:05.520 --> 00:29:06.660 Observation three is this. 00:29:06.800 --> 00:29:12.580 If you anticipate or desire to be used of the Lord, start with humility before him. 00:29:13.180 --> 00:29:18.280 Not only in this moment has Esther said, God, we need you, and I'm seeking you with all my heart. 00:29:18.560 --> 00:29:21.790 But she's also recognized God, and I want to be used by you. 00:29:22.880 --> 00:29:30.360 Not only do we need humility to seek after the Lord, but humility allows the Lord to move and 00:29:30.360 --> 00:29:31.860 within us and use us. 00:29:31.940 --> 00:29:38.920 In Psalm ten and verse 17 says this, O Lord, you have heard the desire of the humble, you will strengthen their heart. 00:29:40.560 --> 00:29:47.110 In those moments, God uses that opportunity before him to strengthen your heart and service to him. 00:29:48.200 --> 00:29:51.600 But can I tell you as we're talking
