the Bible, we always want to come with a proper historical context, kind of get our minds in the era and what was going on. 00:01:39.280 --> 00:01:43.920 So if you'll see the chronology there, the chronology of the judges timeline. 00:01:43.920 --> 00:01:50.920 So the government that the Israelites, God's people had prior to the kings, the monarchy beginning to reign, was out of the judges. 00:01:51.580 --> 00:01:57.380 And starting in 1350 BC, all the way to about 1050 BC, and Samuel, the first Samuel. 00:01:57.600 --> 00:02:04.700 It records to us there in 1050 BC that the people, the Israelites, began to murmur and complain that 00:02:04.700 --> 00:02:08.900 they wanted a king, a king like all the other nations had. 00:02:09.580 --> 00:02:12.020 They didn't want to be under the judges anymore. 00:02:12.580 --> 00:02:14.980 Indeed, they didn't really want to be under God's reign anymore. 00:02:15.660 --> 00:02:19.800 They wanted an earthly, a king like all the other nations own heart. 00:02:57.540 --> 00:02:57.640 Right? 00:02:58.360 --> 00:03:05.520 And King David God used King David and many mighty ways it took Israel and made them a nation 00:03:05.520 --> 00:03:06.230 of prominence. 00:03:07.140 --> 00:03:14.180 And he did that by David, leading armies out to battle and taking out the heathens and the pagans around them and 00:03:14.540 --> 00:03:14.940 destroying them. 00:03:14.960 --> 00:03:22.040 There's lots of battles that found in the Old Testament that King David was in charge of, and leading the way and allowed Israel 00:03:22.040 --> 00:03:25.420 to rise to a point of prominence in that time period. 00:03:28.540 --> 00:03:35.560 as time grew on, if you follow the story, they that the temple, because they were before they had 00:03:35.560 --> 00:03:38.680 gotten into the promised land, God had allowed them to build a tabernacle. 00:03:39.000 --> 00:03:42.940 And it was there that God would dwell with his people, and the priest would take care of that. 00:03:43.200 --> 00:03:44.600 But this tabernacle was portable. 00:03:45.140 --> 00:03:52.420 But at the end, when David vanquished all the foes and established Jerusalem as God's city, David desired 00:03:52.420 --> 00:03:58.860 to have God's tabernacle be built into a temple, a permanent place of dwelling for God. 00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:07.100 And so the scriptures declare that David went to God through the prophets and asked that if he would could build 00:04:07.100 --> 00:04:07.960 this temple. 00:04:08.640 --> 00:04:11.770 And God's response took, I think, probably David a little bit by surprise. 00:04:12.760 --> 00:04:15.380 God said, no, you can't, because you're a man of war. 00:04:16.079 --> 00:04:17.339 You have lots of blood on your hands. 00:04:17.980 --> 00:04:21.600 And that's just I don't want that to be associated with my name. 00:04:22.240 --> 00:04:23.820 So I will not allow you to do it. 00:04:23.900 --> 00:04:30.900 But he went on to say that he'll allow his son, Solomon, who would be the next king, to be able to fulfill that 00:04:31.160 --> 00:04:32.860 request and build that temple. 00:04:33.820 --> 00:04:39.640 So, as I said, David desired to build a temple for God, but was denied. 00:04:40.920 --> 00:04:43.340 And so he allowed he was going to allow Solomon to do it. 00:04:43.900 --> 00:04:49.130 But when God told him no, there was a very important thing that happened here. 00:04:50.100 --> 00:04:51.400 he said, no. 00:04:51.400 --> 00:04:55.940 God told him no, but he gave David a very important promise. 00:04:56.240 --> 00:04:58.280 It's called the Davidic Covenant. 00:04:59.540 --> 00:05:03.460 And he told David this in second Samuel 716. 00:05:05.560 --> 00:05:12.780 Your house and kingdom will endure before me forever, and your throne will be established forever. 00:05:14.420 --> 00:05:21.760 So although King David didn't wasn't allowed to build the temple, God gave him this what we call an unconditional 00:05:21.760 --> 00:05:22.260 covenant. 00:05:23.380 --> 00:05:25.060 This covenant, this promise that God made. 00:05:25.120 --> 00:05:29.540 David told David that his throne and his kingdom will rule forever. 00:05:30.480 --> 00:05:32.000 That's an amazing promise, is it not? 00:05:33.300 --> 00:05:34.360 It's unconditional. 00:05:34.360 --> 00:05:39.260 There's nothing that illustrates to us that David had to do something in order for that to happen. 00:05:39.800 --> 00:05:41.840 He told David, I'm going to make this happen. 00:05:42.000 --> --> 00:05:59.200 And so you would think that we'd see Israel begin to increase its prominence in the world as the world grew and the civilization 00:05:59.200 --> 00:06:05.330 expanded, its borders and time progressed and technology progressed, that Israel would be the main capital. 00:06:05.440 --> 00:06:12.660 And if God's promise indeed was true that Israel would, that the king that would succeed David 00:06:12.660 --> 00:06:14.240 would still be in power today. 00:06:15.860 --> 00:06:21.840 And we come to find out through the chronicles of history and found in Scripture that indeed after Solomon, something happened to God's people, something very, negative. 00:06:37.880 --> 00:06:39.020 the divided kingdom. 00:06:39.100 --> 00:06:42.810 So there was 12 tribes that constituted hard on the people, and the people rebelled. 00:06:59.060 --> 00:07:05.060 The ten tribes to the north rebelled against him, and they established their own king over here, Jeroboam the first. 00:07:06.020 --> 00:07:08.920 And so God's kingdom was suddenly divided. 00:07:10.140 --> 00:07:17.300 And so the first, the first kings and chronicles of the Old Testament, tell 00:07:17.300 --> 00:07:22.920 us it's a historical narrative, and it begins to describe the children of Israel as these two separate kingdoms. 00:07:23.320 --> 00:07:29.480 We have two kings reigning, and no longer is God choosing the king, right? 00:07:29.520 --> 00:07:35.080 It's a it turns from a charismatic choice from God to a dynasty. 00:07:36.200 --> 00:07:38.320 It's all about lineage from Solomon on. dynastic government, a dynastic monarchy, right? 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:54.240 And so this begins to happen. 00:07:54.240 --> 00:08:01.720 And as you follow these kings to the north, the tribes to the north, the ten tribes, the lost ten tribes, they're 00:08:01.720 --> 00:08:04.100 very evil and very wicked. 00:08:04.760 --> 00:08:11.100 They taken the temple and that's found in Jerusalem and all those things, and they've copied that. 00:08:11.500 --> 00:08:12.580 They've put it up in their area. 00:08:12.860 --> 00:08:18.380 So because they didn't want their the Israelites, those people of the ten tribes to come down in Jerusalem and be influenced by them. 00:08:18.740 --> 00:08:25.840 So they made their own worship center and they made a counterfeit of what Jerusalem was for 00:08:25.840 --> 00:08:27.160 God and all of that. 00:08:28.140 --> 00:08:30.740 And the kings begin to worship pagan gods and idols. 00:08:31.380 --> 00:08:36.880 And you can see through the time that they're just getting progressively evil and more evil and more evil. 00:08:37.480 --> 00:08:42.289 The godly line, the line from David to Solomon and the roboam to Abijah. 00:08:42.919 --> 00:08:47.260 You would hope that that's the second kingdom called Judah. 00:08:48.240 --> 00:08:51.490 You would hope that they increasingly became reliant on the Lord. 00:08:51.920 --> 00:08:59.060 But in fact, as you read the chronicles and kings of the Old Testament, you'll see that there was some pretty good kings, but 00:08:59.060 --> 00:09:00.260 there was also some very bad kings. 00:09:01.140 --> 00:09:08.840 And through time God's people began to be taken away and swept away from the things of God and 00:09:08.840 --> 00:09:12.880 the worship of God to the worship of false --> 00:09:32.970 King Josiah is one of the last kings of Judah before the tribe of Judah or Judah. 00:09:33.320 --> 00:09:37.210 The people of Judah begin to get carried away into Babylonian captivity. 00:09:37.960 --> 00:09:41.180 And so we want to pick up here in King Josiah. 00:09:41.180 --> 00:09:43.970 King Josiah was actually a very good king, which is an absolute miracle. 00:09:44.440 --> 00:09:51.330 If you look at his father, who reigned before him, and the wickedness that he had imposed on the people. 00:09:52.820 --> 00:09:54.720 but King Josiah was a good king. 00:10:07.520 He was eight years old when he began to reign. 00:10:07.540 --> 00:10:14.760 When I tell love telling my the story to my children, I was like, could you imagine being eight years old and reigning over a people 00:10:14.760 --> 00:10:21.720 and their, very surprised he did what was right in the, in the Lord's sight. 00:10:22.320 --> 00:10:23.420 And so that's very key. 00:10:23.520 --> 00:10:30.560 Every king when their the chronology of the kings right away the author tells us this King did evil in the sight of the Lord, or this 00:10:30.560 --> 00:10:33.220 king tried to do right in the sight of the Lord. 00:10:33.540 --> 00:10:34.540 And so Josiah was a good king. 00:10:35.640 --> 00:10:40.860 And then in the eighth year of his reign, he began to seek the God of his ancestor David. 00:10:41.800 --> 00:10:49.420 So all this time of the people of Judah being kind of pulled away from the things of God, the real God, the true God, who had 00:10:49.420 --> 00:10:56.720 delivered them out of Egypt, had done all these miraculous things, begins to get pushed further and further from their lives to the point where the king doesn't 00:10:56.720 --> 00:10:58.020 even know who this God is. 00:10:58.980 --> 00:11:03.750 He's heard of him, but he has no way of knowing how to have relationship with him. 00:11:04.220 --> 00:11:09.160 But he desires that he desires to seek 00:11:49.520 --> 00:11:56.540 He committed a sick of a significant amount of money and craftsmen in order to attempt to restore the temple to its former 00:11:56.540 --> 00:11:56.980 glory. 00:11:57.020 --> 00:12:00.060 So he began to clean the land of idols and false gods. 00:12:00.660 --> 00:12:02.340 And then he turned his lord to this temple. 00:12:02.420 --> 00:12:04.810 This temple had been that was great and grandeur. 00:12:04.940 --> 00:12:11.520 King Solomon's temple had been run down and broken down, and so he knew that this was supposed to be the house of God. 00:12:11.920 money that had been deposited in the Lord's temple, Hilkiah the priest found the book of the law of the 00:12:36.600 --> 00:12:39.120 Lord written by the hand of Moses. 00:12:40.820 --> 00:12:47.440 So as they're cleaning up the temple, the priest comes along, dusts off some dust, finds this book. 00:12:48.620 --> 00:12:49.100 What is this? 00:12:50.620 --> 00:12:53.250 It's the law of the Lord clothes and he says, oh no, we're in trouble. 00:14:26.340 --> 00:14:31.460 Second Chronicles 3414 says Hilkiah, the priest found the book of the law of the Lord written by the hand of Moses. again, King Josiah, he says, go and inquire of the prophetess what God's 00:16:09.060 --> 00:16:15.020 going to do, because we are according to the Mosaic Law, we are going to get God's wrath. 00:16:15.780 --> 00:16:17.940 We have violated this conditional covenant. 00:16:18.760 --> 00:16:20.620 And so they went and inquired to the prophetess Huldah. 00:16:21.620 --> 00:16:22.800 And the old and the New Testament, because what it starts off with, first and foremost is king or 00:32:21.200 --> 00:32:28.200 king Jesus's lineage, going back all the way back to King David, fulfilling the Davidic covenant. 00:32:28.280 --> 00:32:31.710 So this book was written to the Jews as saying, this is your king. 00:32:32.760 --> 00:32:34.850 This is the king that God promised. 00:32:36.260 --> 00:32:36.360 And. 00:32:42.400 --> 00:32:45.460 Matthew 123 says, see this virgin? 00:32:45.460 --> 00:32:51.540 So in the book of Matthew it gives the lineage, and then it goes on to say, see, the Virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son. 00:32:51.560 --> 00:32:56.540 This is an Old Testament prophecy that was given 800 years prior to Christ's coming. 00:32:57.320 --> 00:33:02.220 And they will name him Immanuel, which is translated God is with us. 00:33:03.240 --> 00:33:04.140 This is an eternal King. 00:33:04.920 --> 00:33:10.220 This isn't a human king who will die and hope that his son comes up. 00:33:10.220 --> 00:33:11.940 He's an eternal king and he will reign forever. 00:33:12.700 --> 00:33:19.740 121 says she will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from 00:33:19.740 --> 00:33:20.300 their sins. 00:33:21.540 --> 00:33:25.740 The Hebrew word for Jesus is Yeshua and it means the Lord is salvation. 00:33:26.180 --> 00:33:33.320 So it was all planned from the beginning of time that this Messiah would come, that God would step into his creation to save 00:33:33.320 --> 00:33:35.420 a people from their sins. 00:33:37.560 --> 00:33:40.560 And then the Book of Matthew also contains the sermon on the Mount. 00:33:41.560 --> 00:33:44.580 That's located in Matthew five, chapters five through seven.
