Gideon, which is kind of a bizarre story also. 00:05:53.060 --> 00:05:57.960 But that's where I really want to focus today, because it gives us a lot that we can apply to our lives today. 00:05:58.000 in chapter six, and we'll start in verse one. 00:06:11.540 --> 00:06:17.880 In Judges chapter six one, it says the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord gave them themselves the dens that are in the mountains, and the caves and the strongholds. 00:06:29.260 --> 00:06:36.260 For whenever the Israelites planted crops, the Midianites and Amalekites and the people of the east would come up against them, they would encamp against them and 00:06:36.260 --> 00:06:43.560 devour the produce of the land as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance in Israel, and no sheep or ox or donkey, for 00:06:43.560 --> 00:06:45.470 they would come up with their livestock and their tents. 00:06:45.940 --> 00:06:47.440 They would come like locusts in number. 00:06:48.040 --> 00:06:54.360 Both they and their camels could not be counted, so they laid waste to the land as they came in. 00:06:54.400 --> 00:06:56.240 And Israel was brought very low because of Midian. --> 00:07:27.660 But you have not obeyed my voice. 00:07:29.200 --> 00:07:36.880 So like the rest of the story of judges, and a lot of the stories you read in the Old Testament, Israel disobeys God, they turn to idols. 00:07:36.960 --> 00:07:38.200 In this particular story, we know. 00:07:38.200 --> 00:07:43.480 They turn to the to the false god of Baal, to Baal, and worshiped Baal and Gideon. deliver them. 00:07:59.220 --> 00:08:02.780 And so we look at this and we talked about it last week. 00:08:03.220 --> 00:08:10.280 And throughout that, when you read the Old Testament narratives through the through the Old Testament, it's not necessarily good to directly 00:08:10.280 --> 00:08:13.960 apply what you read in the Old Testament to your life. 00:08:14.060 --> 00:08:21.320 For example, if you sinned today, odds are God isn't going to send an overwhelming nation to come and conquer you and 00:08:21.600 --> 00:08:26.160 enslave you and oppress you, that's probably not what the consequence that you'll face. 00:08:26.920 --> 00:08:29.600 But we can we can glean application from it. 00:08:29.600 --> 00:08:32.450 That's why we like to read the New Testament, because it's a lot easier to apply. 00:08:33.039 --> 00:08:38.179 Like in the book of Ephesians, when Paul tells husbands that we're to love our wives like Jesus loved the church. 00:08:38.179 --> 00:08:39.440 That's easy to apply to us today. 00:08:39.740 --> 00:08:41.750 It's the same application for us as it was for them. 00:08:42.200 --> 00:08:43.530 So we like to read that because it's easier. 00:08:43.720 --> 00:08:45.890 But in the Old Testament it can get kind of confusing. 00:08:47.780 --> 00:08:52.470 But to kind of think about it, we have consequences and there are consequences for ago, we looked at the life of Joseph and Lust, and we talked a little bit about lust. 00:09:23.340 --> 00:09:25.980 And you think about lust in your head. 00:09:26.660 --> 00:09:32.720 And the consequence of that lust might not be directly evident to you in your life right away. 00:09:33.080 --> 00:09:40.480 But if you think about the habit or the sin habit of watching pornography, it doesn't have a direct effect 00:09:40.480 --> 00:09:41.030 necessarily. 00:09:41.300 --> 00:09:48.500 But the consequence of that sin is indirectly, you're supporting and encouraging slavery in the sex trade and sex 00:09:48.500 --> 00:09:51.720 slavery, because that's what the industry does. 00:09:51.740 --> 00:09:58.980 A lot of the girls that get stuck in that trade have to drug themselves with drugs or alcohol to 00:09:59.120 --> 00:10:02.580 numb the pain and reality of what's happening to them throughout. 00:10:03.820 --> 00:10:11.440 And when you watch that, you encourage that the consequence of your sin is the fact that you aren't directly affected necessarily, 00:10:11.540 --> 00:10:12.140 which you are. 00:10:12.960 --> 00:10:17.780 The last time I preached, I talked a lot about the effects that pornography can have on your mind. 00:10:18.400 --> 00:10:23.440 But the consequence of your sin also affects other people in their enslavement in that particular sin. 00:10:23.480 --> 00:10:28.000 So it might be directly obvious, like the drunk person who gets in an accident and kills someone. 00:10:28.440 --> 00:10:36.000 It might be not so obvious, like the man addicted to pornography who's encouraging the enslavement of women around the world for 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:36.700 abuse. 00:10:38.820 --> 00:10:45.120 And so whether the consequence of sin is obvious physically or not, there is a consequence for sin. 00:10:45.120 --> 00:10:49.120 And if you read in the New Testament, in Romans chapter six and verse 23. 00:10:51.920 --> 00:10:54.160 Says the wages of sin is death. 00:10:54.580 --> 00:10:59.760 The consequence of our sin is death, spiritual separation from God. 00:10:59.760 --> 00:11:01.100 Sin has a consequence. 00:11:01.980 --> 00:11:08.720 And in first Corinthians chapter six, verses nine through ten, it says, do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? 00:11:09.160 --> 00:11:16.940 Do not be deceived, neither sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, men who practice homosexuality, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, 00:11:17.120 --> 00:11:19.960 nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the Corinthians 611 goes on, and it says, and such were some of you, but you were washed, you were sanctified, you were 00:12:00.020 --> 00:12:04.400 justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and by the spirit of our God. 00:12:05.520 --> 00:12:11.360 And I really like First Corinthians because we tend to read verses nine and ten and we're like, absolutely, 100% agree. 00:12:11.380 --> all that all of us have that consequence of sin, that we all fall short, and we do not deserve to 00:12:34.180 --> 00:12:37.680 inherit the kingdom of God, but we were washed. 00:12:39.300 --> 00:12:43.230 We were sanctified and we were justified in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:12:44.300 --> 00:12:51.140 I think one of the problems that we tend to fall into, one of the ditches we The one thing I really like about about Scripture and when you read is a lot of the heroes in the Bible, whether it be Old Testament or 00:14:46.580 --> 00:14:53.260 New Testament, when you read about them and you kind of look at their life, you realize that they really weren't that impressive of people. 00:14:54.040 --> 00:14:58.140 It says here that Gideon was beating out the wheat in the
