particular place at a particular time, in a in a culture we can't always relate to. 00:00:27.140 --> 00:00:34.320 And so it's important for us to understand what the Bible is communicating within the around Moses leading the nation of Israel out of Egypt as slaves into 00:01:35.140 --> 00:01:39.800 the Promised Land, where the where God had given to them through Abraham in the land of Canaan. 00:01:40.940 --> 00:01:41.890 They're exiting Egypt. 00:01:43.560 --> 00:01:44.220 Into Israel. 00:01:45.900 --> 00:01:53.360 We've seen together God's calling of the nation of Israel through the man we've called Abraham, Father Abraham, Abraham having Isaac 00:01:53.360 --> 00:01:54.300 and Jacob. 00:01:54.300 --> 00:01:55.780 And then last week we looked at Joseph. 00:01:57.240 --> 00:02:02.940 We learned in the in the life of Joseph, what happens is Joseph brings the people of Israel into Egypt. 00:02:04.340 --> 00:02:07.300 And under the power of Egypt, he raises up a mighty nation. 00:02:08.860 --> 00:02:12.690 You might wonder at the beginning of the existence of Abraham when God gives him a promise. 00:02:12.860 --> 00:02:18.300 I'm going to make a multitude of people from you, Abraham, and through your seed all nations will be blessed. 00:02:18.660 --> 00:02:25.780 How in the world is God going to grow a nation out of one individual, where they're not going to be attacked by other nations feeling 00:02:26.260 --> 00:02:27.770 pressured by them? 00:02:28.360 --> 00:02:31.640 And the answer is that God hides the nation of Israel in the land of Egypt. 00:02:32.920 --> 00:02:36.780 From the time of Joseph to the time of Moses. 00:02:36.840 --> 00:02:43.920 If you count a generation in that time of about 20 years, there's 11 generations of people that exist within that time period from when 00:02:44.320 --> 00:02:51.160 Joseph's married and begins his family to the time Moses comes back to the land of Egypt to lead the nation of Israel free. 00:02:52.620 --> 00:02:56.120 Between the death of Joseph and the birth of Moses. 00:02:56.120 --> 00:02:57.810 You're looking at about 60 years. 00:02:57.940 --> 00:03:05.140 And from the time Moses is born to the time Moses is called to lead the nation of Israel out of the land of Egypt, you're looking at about 80 00:03:05.140 --> 00:03:05.240 years. 00:03:07.580 --> 00:03:14.860 Under the protection of Egypt, and with 11 generations, God grows this people group into an enormous amount 00:03:15.020 --> 00:03:15.670 of individuals. 00:03:15.740 --> 00:03:23.040 It tells us in Exodus chapter two, that the Pharaoh at the time notices that the people of Israel are growing 00:03:23.040 --> 00:03:26.760 in numbers, and they begin to feel threatened by their presence in the land of Egypt. 00:03:26.860 --> 00:03:28.640 And so he makes them slaves. 00:03:28.680 --> 00:03:35.760 And then he tells the midwives that if a Hebrew child is born, that if it's a male that they are to kill it, and if it's if it's 00:03:35.760 --> 00:03:38.360 a female, they're allowed to let it live. 00:03:38.700 --> 00:03:42.260 And the midwives wouldn't participate in what the Pharaoh said. 00:03:42.260 --> 00:03:45.160 And so the pharaoh tells his army, Army go into the homes. 00:03:45.160 --> 00:03:48.220 And if there's a male child under the age of two, you are to kill it. 00:03:48.220 --> 00:03:49.850 But if it's a female, let it live. 00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:57.040 And then Moses is born and his mother, at three months old, hides him in a basket and puts him next to the Nile. 00:03:58.440 --> 00:04:05.820 The Bible tells us that in those moments, as he lay there, I'm assuming next to some pretty big crocodiles, Pharaoh's daughter 00:04:05.820 --> 00:04:08.620 daughter comes down to the water and finds Moses. 00:04:10.120 --> 00:04:17.220 It just so happens as she finds Moses, Moses's sister, is hiding beside him, and she pops up and just says, hey, I know someone great that could help 00:04:17.220 --> 00:04:18.320 take care of this child. 00:04:18.820 --> 00:04:20.480 And she says, okay, go get him. 00:04:20.480 --> 00:04:27.620 And so the Moses's sister goes and gets Moses's mother, and Moses's mother now is asked to care for her 00:04:27.620 --> 00:04:28.320 own son. 00:04:29.460 --> 00:04:36.580 And so Moses is raised in such a way that he learns in the schooling of the Egyptians, but he also is connected to his own people, the 00:04:36.660 --> 00:04:36.900 Jewish people. 00:04:39.360 --> 00:04:41.260 And so his heart rests with them. 00:04:43.320 --> 00:04:50.340 Many scholars believe that within those 11 generations, if you look in chapter two of Exodus, it continues to say that God showed favor to the nation of Israel, and they 00:04:50.340 --> 00:04:52.220 greatly increased in population. 00:04:53.480 --> 00:05:00.940 If you mathematically figure it out at about three three kids per family, I'm assuming in those days they started a little bit younger at having 00:05:00.940 --> 00:05:03.760 kids, and they were a little bit better at it than what we are. 00:05:04.160 --> 00:05:11.300 And so larger families may have existed, but if everyone had on average, a little over three kids, it would become easy for the nation of Israel to multiply 00:05:11.300 --> 00:05:15.500 into millions of individuals by the time Moses sets them free. 00:05:17.400 --> 00:05:24.560 Some people estimate that size to be somewhere about 2.5 million individuals that would have exited out of the land of 00:05:24.900 --> 00:05:28.850 Egypt into the nation of Israel and to the land of Canaan. 00:05:30.520 --> 00:05:37.980 And it's on the back of the growth of this nation as God has protected them on the protection of Israel, that God leads this man, 00:05:37.980 --> 00:05:43.560 Moses, to call them out of slavery and into their relationship with God as they go into the land of Canaan. 00:05:45.300 --> 00:05:52.100 We said at the very beginning that the book of Genesis Moses writes the first five books of the Bible, and the book of Genesis is a book of beginnings. 00:05:52.260 --> 00:05:59.000 It's a book that's written to a people who have been slave for decades, trying to reshape their identity and who they are in God. 00:06:01.360 --> 00:06:03.170 God created you in his image. 00:06:04.320 --> 00:06:08.840 God made imagine if you read the life of the story of Moses. 00:06:19.760 --> 00:06:25.480 Moses is raised until he's in his 40s under Egyptian care, ruling in Pharaoh's household. 00:06:25.520 --> 00:06:30.540 The Bible tells us that one day he's on a trip out to see how the Jewish people are doing. 00:06:30.540 --> 00:06:37.720 And as he's walking around, he sees one of the Egyptians being angered and coming towards one of the Jewish people. 00:06:37.840 --> 00:06:39.890 And he starts attacking that Jewish person. 00:06:40.340 --> 00:06:44.360 And Moses steps in and the Bible tells us that he kills the Egyptian. 00:06:46.540 --> 00:06:50.340 He knows that secret comes out and Pharaoh is going to find out. 00:06:50.360 --> 00:06:51.400 And now Pharaoh is going to hunt Moses. 00:06:51.980 --> 00:06:57.700 And so the Bible tells us that Moses flees to the land of Midian, and he's there for 40 years. 00:06:59.560 --> 00:07:04.220 And when Moses is 80 years old, God comes to him. 00:07:06.160 --> 00:07:06.840 80 years old. 00:07:06.900 --> 00:07:13.920 I can imagine at my point in life, I may not be quite asking for a new direction for God to give me, but in this their sufferings. 00:07:49.980 --> 00:07:52.350 Now think in the life of Moses, all of us have been in this place. 00:07:52.520 --> 00:07:57.140 Moses isn't in a position of slavery, but he's left and he's an alien in a foreign land. 00:07:58.980 --> 00:08:04.340 And the nation of Israel in these moments, are thinking about the persecution that they're under and the slavery that they're having to endure. 00:08:04.660 --> 00:08:08.500 And Moses thinking how he just stood up for his people now it's left him all alone. 00:08:08.540 --> 00:08:11.040 He hasn't for 40 years been able to see his family. 00:08:12.860 --> 00:08:19.900 And he's praying before God about what he's had to endure, thinking about his family, who's under that slavery, and the people of Israel trapped under the 00:08:19.900 --> 00:08:21.480 slavery of Egypt. 00:08:21.480 --> 00:08:23.980 And I can't help but maybe relate a little bit to this moment. 00:08:23.980 --> 00:08:28.480 Not in the sense of slavery, 00:08:49.950 aware of their sufferings. 00:08:52.360 --> 00:08:53.380 God hears their prayers. 00:08:54.440 --> 00:08:55.360 God sees their sufferings. 00:08:57.160 --> 00:08:57.700 And God remembers. 00:09:00.260 --> 00:09:01.750 When it comes to the idea of prayer. 00:09:01.960 --> 00:09:05.460 Sometimes within our lives we feel as if prayers are hitting the ceiling. 00:09:07.720 --> 00:09:13.960 But the encouragement from the story as it begins is don't stop pouring your heart before God. 00:09:14.760 --> 00:09:20.190 Psalm 34 and 17 says this the righteous cry, and the Lord hears and as God hears, he does something just bizarre. 00:09:40.360 --> 00:09:46.220 I got to tell you this morning when you read the Bible, the first five books of the Bible are what's called the Pentateuch. read history books as God reveals himself, just because God reveals himself in a particular way doesn't mean God is always 00:10:00.060 --> 00:10:01.520 going to reveal himself that way. 00:10:01.520 --> 00:10:01.620 Right? 00:10:02.520 --> 00:10:05.440 But I would say that the story of Moses happens like this. 00:10:05.860 --> 00:10:07.100 There's a burning bush. 00:10:07.120 --> 00:10:14.180 And I want to tell you as a as a church family, if you're ever in your backyard and you know, a burning bush pops up, I 00:10:14.180 --> 00:10:21.680 would call the fire department, okay, but if you think it's from the Lord, Moses lived at a time where there's no tweets, texts, and Facebook, let 00:10:21.680 --> 00:10:25.430 me know, okay, I want to come over and participate in that, in that with you. 00:10:25.520 --> 00:10:28.220 But the story goes like this strange encounter with God. 00:10:28.220 --> 00:10:35.380 It says, now Moses was pastoring the flock of Jethro, his father in law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the West 00:10:35.380 --> 00:10:39.020 side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:42.740 The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush. 00:10:43.500 --> 00:10:47.680 And he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed. 00:10:47.960 --> 00:10:51.520 And so Moses said, I must turn aside now and see the marvelous sight. 00:10:51.940 --> 00:10:53.740 Why the bush is not burned up. 00:10:54.220 --> 00:11:00.220 When the Lord saw that he turned aside 00:11:56.800 And if. 00:11:57.040 --> 00:12:00.660 If we're not careful here, God's going to demonstrate himself as some sort of hippie, right? 00:12:00.660 --> 00:12:04.640 In this situation, it's like at any moment God might say, get into warrior pose. 00:12:04.840 --> 00:12:06.460 Moses, right? 00:12:06.880 --> 00:12:09.760 But God tells Moses something unique in this situation. 00:12:09.760 --> 00:12:10.060 He tells. 00:12:10.300 --> 00:12:17.340 He tells Moses as he's lighting this bush, God, God's going to recognize for himself an identity in which he is going to present himself 00:12:17.340 --> 00:12:19.600 to the nation of Israel for years to come. 00:12:20.620 --> 00:12:22.350 Moses is going to be the one who builds the tabernacle. 00:12:23.600 --> 00:12:27.500 Moses is going to be the one who leads the nation of Israel through the wilderness, wandering for 40 years. 00:12:28.520 --> 00:12:35.740 And the Bible tells us, when the nation of Israel is wandering, that by God's doing in this passage of Scripture is he's identifying himself in a way that has not been done. 00:13:11.020 --> 00:13:15.150 This is the first time in the Bible that God tells Moses that he is holy. 00:13:16.540 --> 00:13:20.980 It's the first time that the attribute of God and holiness is being revealed to a person. 00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:28.180 And as God is saying this to Moses, he's telling Moses to take off his shoes to distinguish from Moses the difference between creature 00:13:28.180 --> 00:13:29.260 and creator. 00:13:31.300 --> 00:13:34.460 You remember way back in the beginning of Genesis when God made man? 00:13:34.460 --> 00:13:38.340 It tells us that he formed us from the dirt of the earth. 00:13:39.680 --> 00:13:46.970 And what God is asking of Moses and the demonstration of his holiness is to say, Moses, I am so set apart, I am I am so inspiring. 00:13:47.620 --> 00:13:49.040 I am so powerful. 00:13:49.040 --> 00:13:56.300 I'm so mighty before your eyes that I want you to take off your shoes in this moment of me presenting my holiness as a way to demonstrate not 00:13:56.300 --> 00:13:58.700 only to you, but to the nation of Israel. 00:13:58.900 --> about the most powerful nation at the time, Pharaoh would have been first on your list. 00:14:40.960 --> 00:14:46.320 In order to even began to believe that this was a possibility for God to do through Moses. 00:14:46.620 --> 00:14:52.440 The first thing that Moses needed to recognize is the authority of the one who is calling him to do it. 00:14:54.280 --> 00:15:01.620 And you think in the beginning of this verse, when you hear the prayers of the nation of Israel and God answering that, and Moses coming before God 00:15:01.620 --> 00:15:08.620 and just thinking about this moment, and God is saying to Moses, Moses, I'm about to prove to you that I have the 00:15:08.620 --> 00:15:11.480 authority to do what I'm calling you to do. 00:15:13.040 --> 00:15:17.720 Because I'm holy. 00:15:18.680 --> 00:15:22.140 Now before God leads us anywhere in this world. 00:15:23.520 --> 00:15:27.620 Before God does anything with us for a new direction in our lives. 00:15:29.300 --> 15, who among the gods is like you, O Lord? 00:15:54.400 --> 00:15:59.620 Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders. 00:16:02.740 --> 00:16:09.920 Moses is demonstrating to the people that it's by the authority and the holiness of God as he presented it to him, that the that this was even 00:16:09.920 --> 00:16:12.120 possible for his people. 00:16:13.460 --> nation of Egypt, as Moses was raised under Egyptian rule, he would have discovered that the people of Egypt worshiped many 00:16:40.080 --> 00:16:40.540 gods. 00:16:41.800 --> 00:16:46.170 In fact, the ten plagues that we often hear about, let my people go. 00:16:46.380 --> 00:16:47.120 You know that part, right? 00:16:47.320 --> 00:16:48.150 And then the plagues happen. 00:16:48.400 --> 00:16:55.860 I don't know, that's off some movie somewhere, but the plagues that devastate the land of Egypt are all directed toward 00:16:55.860 --> 00:17:03.080 a false deity or a false idol that the people of Egypt had been worshiping is as if God is saying 00:17:03.080 --> 00:17:10.099 to the land of Egypt and to the people of Israel, this God is so holy that he defeats the false 00:17:10.099 --> 00:17:11.079 gods of the world. 00:17:11.260 --> 00:17:15.220 And so Moses comes before God and he asks a very specific question. 00:17:15.220 --> 00:17:22.089 He says, therefore, come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, so that you may bring my people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt. 00:17:23.020 --> 00:17:28.580 But Moses said to God, who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt? 00:17:29.620 --> 00:17:35.560 And he said, certainly I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you. 00:26:18.340 --> 00:26:25.380 If there's any doubt about what Jesus is trying to say, he's going back to the book of Exodus and he's saying to the Jewish people, remember, 00:26:25.720 --> 00:26:32.810 remember in the bush when God showed up to Moses and he declared himself as the great I am Yahweh, who is Elohim? 00:26:33.060 --> 00:26:33.880 Do you remember that? 00:26:34.640 -->
