book found in really towards the middle of the New 00:00:51.760 --> 00:00:51.860 Testament. 00:00:55.160 --> 00:00:57.730 Colosse was an interesting city. 00:00:58.940 --> 00:01:02.340 It was once a city of mass amounts of people. 00:01:02.340 --> 00:01:09.420 By the time the Apostle Paul showed up on the scene, it had gone to a fallen to a much smaller city than the typical cities 00:01:09.420 --> 00:01:10.740 that we saw Paul visit. 00:01:10.900 --> 00:01:13.220 In fact, you will find within scriptures we study together. 00:01:13.220 --> 00:01:20.400 Many people believe that Paul didn't actually ever visit the city of Colosse, but nonetheless, because Paul journeyed across on 00:01:20.400 --> 00:01:24.000 his missionary journeys when on three separate missionary journeys that we know of through the book of acts. 00:01:24.600 --> 00:01:31.600 What we find in the book of Colossians is a church that was established through the work of Paul as he began to preach the to the gospel in surrounding 00:01:31.600 --> 00:01:34.010 cities around the area of Colossae. 00:01:35.660 --> 00:01:39.120 What happened to the city was that it was changed. 00:01:40.850 --> 00:01:45.800 It was changed for the glory of God by the power of the gospel, as it was made known to the people there. 00:01:47.880 --> 00:01:54.940 What I find about interesting about the early church people and the followers of Jesus is that when they sought to administer the gospel, to 00:01:54.940 --> 00:02:00.490 share the truth that God had accomplished in their life, and to give the experience that Jesus brought into their own world with other people. 00:02:00.500 --> 00:02:01.680 It came at a sacrifice. 00:02:04.560 --> 00:02:11.640 This morning, we could begin by asking ourselves, when we think about the idea of truth and the significance of truth in our lives, and understanding what it means to be complete 00:02:11.640 --> 00:02:12.320 in Christ. 00:02:12.820 --> 00:02:17.260 Asking ourselves, how far are you willing to go for the sake of truth? 00:02:19.820 --> 00:02:25.510 We read about the life of Jesus when Jesus showed up on the scene in the first century. 00:02:25.620 --> 00:02:30.220 What he was interested in is finding people who wanted to be radically different for the sake of his kingdom. 00:02:32.660 --> 00:02:40.400 He tells us in Luke 923, and he was saying to them all, if anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, take 00:02:40.440 --> 00:02:42.980 up his cross daily and follow me. 00:02:45.180 --> 00:02:52.180 The cross creating a picture in their mind of something that's not simply overlooked, but understanding to follow after Jesus was going to take sacrifice. 00:02:52.320 --> 00:02:56.160 So again, I ask this morning, for the sake of truth, how far are you willing to sacrifice? 00:02:58.980 --> 00:03:06.000 Jesus even went on to say in Matthew chapter ten and verse 38, and he who does not take his cross and follow after me is not 00:03:06.080 --> 00:03:07.110 worthy of me. 00:03:09.560 --> 00:03:16.760 We read about the life of Paul and the man that was instrumental in being used to help spread Christianity throughout the entire known Roman Empire 00:03:16.760 --> 00:03:23.800 at the time, began his journey with God as an enemy directly opposing his kingdom and his work against God's 00:03:23.800 --> 00:03:24.600 people. 00:03:25.820 --> 00:03:32.040 In fact, if you were to turn open to the book of acts and read chapter eight and verse verse one, it would say that Paul was consenting unto his death. 00:03:32.040 --> 00:03:36.650 He was excited about the death of the church as he sought out to wreak havoc upon the Christians. 00:03:39.100 --> 00:03:46.120 In acts nine, what we discover is that as Paul began his journey against God as a foe, eventually 00:03:46.120 --> 00:03:53.600 he became God's friend, and on the way to Damascus on a journey to punish Christians 00:03:53.600 --> 00:03:55.940 and throw them in jail for following after Jesus. 00:03:56.700 --> 00:04:04.000 Paul experienced his conversion and accepted Christ, and it was on that moment that very quickly in the Apostle Paul's 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:11.140 life that he began, for the sake of truth, a life of sacrifice, a life that's about change, a change that would be carried into 00:04:11.140 --> 00:04:15.820 the cities around this world and into the region of Colossae, that the people may know Jesus. 00:04:17.940 --> 00:04:25.180 It says in first Corinthians 1123 more imprisonments, talking about his own life, countless beatings, 00:04:25.180 --> 00:04:26.100 often near death. 00:04:26.340 --> 00:04:29.920 Five times I received the hand of the Jews, the 40 lashes less one. 00:04:30.760 --> 00:04:32.240 Three times I was beaten with rods. 00:04:33.180 --> 00:04:38.400 Once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked a night and a day I was adrift at sea. 00:04:38.400 --> 00:04:42.040 On frequent I find out of the whole passage is Paul talks about his suffering for the Lord. 00:05:04.980 --> 00:05:11.560 He says, and apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches. 00:05:13.760 --> 00:05:20.900 If you were to read a commentary on the portion of Scripture as Paul describes the physical abuse that he went through, it says within most commentaries that in verse 00:05:20.900 --> 00:05:28.260 28, as Paul desires his anxiety, and he has the anxiety towards the churches, that it's a greater anxiety for the sake of the church than what he's experiencing 00:05:28.320 --> 00:05:30.440 in his own physical punishment as a believer. 00:05:30.820 --> 00:05:37.840 Following after Jesus, he carries the pressure of every church that he's helped to establish in knowing that they need to get closer to God and 00:05:37.840 --> 00:05:41.850 growing with him to experience that change. 00:05:43.720 --> 00:05:44.600 I can relate to that. 00:05:44.660 --> 00:05:48.320 As a pastor, you wake up in the middle of the night, you pray for your church. 00:05:48.500 --> 00:05:50.460 You think throughout the day how to pray for your church. 00:05:50.580 --> 00:05:57.760 You seek to establish and deepen everyone's relationship with the church, to understand what it means to follow after Jesus, to the point where when 00:05:57.880 --> 00:06:05.880 Paul wrote the book of Colossians in chapter one and verse 24, he says to us, well, 00:06:06.120 --> 00:06:07.280 this is dramatic. 00:06:07.340 --> 00:06:09.140 Pause. 00:06:09.220 --> 00:06:16.340 Now rejoice in my sufferings for your sake and in my flesh I do my share on behalf of his body, which is the church, 00:06:17.080 --> 00:06:20.180 in filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions. 00:06:21.460 --> 00:06:28.540 I mean, it's almost as if Paul is saying, I'm enjoying the opportunity, even if it's costing me anything to stand for you because of the sake of truth and the freedom that it brings, and knowing 00:06:28.540 --> 00:06:31.560 Jesus as something that completes you as a person. 00:06:31.860 --> 00:06:34.440 And for that, I'm willing to forsake all things. 00:06:37.160 --> 00:06:38.730 For your sake that I do this. 00:06:40.600 --> 00:06:47.680 See, Paul understood as he began to sacrifice and minister to the churches, he understood that life was at stake and there was a battle 00:06:47.680 --> 00:06:49.130 at hand for truth. 00:06:50.680 --> 00:06:55.260 Paul, as he wrote the book of Colossians to the church of Colossae. 00:06:55.640 --> 00:06:58.080 He also wrote other books during this time period. 00:06:59.880 --> 00:07:07.100 The book of Ephesians, Philippians, Philemon were all taking place within this same time that he wrote the book of Colossians 00:07:07.160 --> 00:07:09.200 in Ephesians chapter five and verse 16. 00:07:09.200 --> 00:07:13.460 He writes to the Christians, make the most of your time, because the days are evil. 00:07:15.240 --> 00:07:22.380 He goes on to say, for our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against rulers and powers, and against the world forces of darkness, against 00:07:22.380 --> 00:07:25.000 the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 00:07:27.220 --> 00:07:34.360 And as Paul writes these books to the believers Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Philemon, he tells us in the book of acts, in chapter 00:07:34.360 --> 00:07:41.360 28 of the story of Paul's life, that Paul is now sitting in a Roman prison, sharing with them the 00:07:41.360 --> 00:07:49.960 need that they have to get closer to Christ in their life, that they may experience what it means to be complete as people in 00:07:49.960 --> 00:07:51.240 the middle of prison. 00:07:52.540 --> 00:07:59.760 Paul writes books like Philippians on joy in the middle of the moments, literally standing in 00:07:59.760 --> 00:08:01.460 bondage for Christ's sake. 00:08:01.740 --> 00:08:08.760 He tells the Colossians that in verse 24, for your sake I'm enjoying this suffering that you, whatever's lacking in 00:08:08.760 --> 00:08:11.100 you, in Christ, may be filled in your life. 00:08:11.260 --> 00:08:17.390 That's how much it's important for you to understand Jesus and give everything in your life to him. 00:08:19.360 --> 00:08:25.970 As Paul sits in this prison in Rome, he's visited by a man named Epaphras. 00:08:27.940 --> 00:08:30.140 Epaphras comes from the town of Colossae. 00:08:31.720 --> 00:08:34.159 It's a town just 100 miles east of Ephesus. 00:08:34.659 --> 00:08:41.460 It was a beautiful place that's described throughout history, one of the largest cities, we said, that has slowly died down. 00:08:41.460 --> 00:08:48.460 If you were to read the Book of Revelation in chapter two and chapter three, you'll see that as John wrote that book, there's churches that he describes seven 00:08:48.460 --> 00:08:53.690 churches within those two chapters of revelation, all of which surround the town and the city of Colossae. 00:08:55.460 --> 00:09:01.380 It was a town of several different beliefs, a town that believed in religion for salvation. 00:09:01.560 --> 00:09:03.020 A town that denied the deity of Christ. 00:09:03.420 --> 00:09:04.960 A town that taught in spiritual mysticism. 00:09:05.920 --> 00:09:09.240 Angelic worship in a town that was in crisis for truth. 00:09:09.260 --> 00:09:14.580 And as Paul visits or excuse me, Epaphras visits Paul in the Roman prison. 00:09:14.740 --> 00:09:21.760 He goes there for a specific purpose, and that's to share with Paul the immediate crisis in which the church is facing in Colossae. 00:09:24.060 --> 00:09:27.500 And he says to Paul, Paul, remember the church that we started? 00:09:29.310 --> 00:09:36.560 Well, it's facing some problems now, even to the point that you realize in these moments you're in bondage 00:09:36.780 --> 00:09:40.420 because you have given 00:10:11.460 Could you imagine those moments being the Apostle Paul sitting 00:10:11.460 --> 00:10:18.820 in a prison saying to God, God, I have given you everything, and yet your children continue to struggle 00:10:18.980 --> 00:10:20.570 in truth. 00:10:22.180 --> 00:10:28.740 God, they continue to struggle to find who you are and live for you, even as they've discovered truth in their own lives Jesus desired for him to accomplish, and regardless of what other people choose in their life, Paul was a 00:11:19.480 --> 00:11:21.080 man after Christ. 00:11:23.960 --> 00:11:31.460 Tells us in chapter one and verse 28, the very purpose for which Paul, as he composes the book of Ephesians and Colossians, what 00:11:31.460 --> 00:11:38.620 he wants to accomplish in the life of the believers there he says to them, we proclaim him, admonishing 00:11:38.620 --> 00:11:45.560 every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ. 00:11:45.600 --> 00:11:46.800 Be complete. 00:11:48.380 --> 00:11:51.300 The word complete in this passage literally means mature. 00:11:51.620 --> 00:11:56.480 When it talks about your spiritual life, you're not lacking in anything meaning to grow with Christ. 00:11:56.480 --> 00:11:58.080 You don't have to depend on any man, though. 00:11:58.080 --> 00:11:59.260 It's good to fellowship with believers. the body of believers. 00:12:15.100 --> 00:12:21.200 And in fact, as you read on in the book of Ephesians in the very last chapter, it's the same vision that Epaphras has for the church in Colossae. 00:12:23.040 --> 00:12:30.920 He says, Epaphras, who is one of your number, a bond slave of Jesus Christ, sends you his greetings, always 00:12:30.920 --> 00:12:34.480 laboring earnestly for you in his prayers that you may stand perfect. 00:12:36.380 --> 00:12:43.500 It's the same Greek word mature, not lacking in anything, and fully assured of what the will of God is in 00:12:43.500 --> 00:12:43.860 your life. 00:12:45.020 --> 00:12:51.440 When we talk about being complete this morning, the idea and the truth that we want to carry with us is that we have an understanding of who Jesus and we'll discover this through the four chapters that are in the book of Colossians. 00:15:42.680 --> 00:15:48.780 In chapter one, he simply outlines for us the belief, Who is Jesus and what has he done for us? 00:15:49.480 --> 00:15:53.780 He begins to declare to us that legalism isn't the way to go in life and mysticism. 00:15:54.480 --> 00:15:56.660 Loving God without living for him isn't the way to life. 00:15:56.680 --> 00:16:01.220 And in chapter three, he then talks to Christians who are living according to their own strength, not trusting in God. 00:16:01.460 --> 00:16:03.980 How do we trust in Jesus now that we know him? 00:16:04.340 --> 00:16:10.000 What does it mean to practically live that out in our lives and be complete as we demonstrate Jesus to this world? 00:16:12.780 their non-Christian friends that are actually detracting them away from the name of Christ rather than bringing them in. 00:16:28.960 --> 00:16:35.960 If we believe truth is relative, as people only in this world not to stand for something and not to push some belief on somebody. 00:16:49.040 --> 00:16:56.080 By carrying a belief that says, whatever you say, whatever you believe, as long as you do good, it's okay is a belief in itself, and 00:16:56.080 --> 00:16:58.380 there's no way not to push a belief on somebody. 00:16:59.060 --> 00:17:03.220 And if you're going to demonstrate a belief to someone, it might as well be truth. 00:17:05.190 --> 00:17:13.460 And so what we discover in Colossians is that what God wants from you as Christians, he 00:17:13.460 --> 00:17:16.560 first wants and we sing songs to worship God, it isn't something that just happens on Sunday, but it comes from the joy of our life because 00:17:45.280 --> 00:17:47.560 we are certain in knowing him. Colossian Christians were going through, but all the churches that the Apostle Paul had ministered Administered to. 00:18:27.740 --> 00:18:33.110 Everyone seemed to want to get their hands in it and begin to change it and manipulate the truth in which they stood for. 00:18:34.460 --> 00:18:37.760 And it was important for the Christians to understand the truth in which they possessed. 00:18:39.920 of endearment expression towards the believers. 00:19:12.800 --> 00:19:18.820 Grace and peace is the only thing that is guaranteed to a Christian that cannot be guaranteed to any other religion in the 00:19:30.480 work, hoping that God accepts him one day. 00:19:30.580 --> 00:19:38.060 But to be a Christian means that automatically, as you've accepted what Christ has done in your life, you have regular guy. 00:28:46.800 --> 00:28:50.540 Epaphras then went back to the city of Colossae with an understanding of this gospel. 00:28:50.540 --> 00:28:55.880 Once he heard the Apostle Paul preach, The man from Epaphras, from the city of Colossae administered the gospel to his people. 00:29:06.500 --> 00:29:11.760 And not only did does this stop with Epaphras, it began to work within the city of mentions his prayer to the believers. 00:32:58.440 --> 00:33:04.440 So many times when we talk about the area of prayer as a church, what we pray for is my broken kidney or my hurt foot, right?
